Well if you went to a biomedicine student now and asked them whether they would like to change to science.. THEY WOULDNT ! even if they dont know the advantages or disadvantages of it over science. I've been aiming for biomedicine all year so of course i'd be dissapointed if i wasn't able to get in. I guess it's just my personal preference !

To be fair, you probably should have looked into it a bit more before you committed to the cause.

Committed to what ? I was committed to Biomedicine.. but i didnt make it because the clearly in went up by 3 .. i had no control of that. i'm trying to make the best of my 2nd preference by asking questions so i can make the most of what i have.. Why are you making me feel as though im doing something wrong ?

I'm saying you should have found more information, etc before you strictly decided you wanted to do biomed. I am saying it's wrong to want to do something without actually knowing why, or what your other options are.

While saying this may not improve your mood, know that it is not my intention to cause you distress. I'm prompting you to consider this issue for future purposes and indeed this is the angle you should be taking it from.

And btw to do physics in bachelor of science is it set out like the biomedicine course... where there is different kind of physics depending on whether you have or havnt done it in VCE?
Many of the Biomed students would probably have done VCE Physics and therefore would be doing the same Physics as Science students.

I know some Biomed students think that Science students are those that have not made it into Biomed (and are therefore of less threat to them - in terms of competing to get into a Health Science course in UoM). I find this utter rubbish and probably explains why people get upset getting into Science and not Biomed.

So let's clear things up.

1. Everyone has equal chances - same subjects, same prerequisites, same selection process
2. Science at UoM is a prestigious degree. Just because it's advertised as minimum ENTER of 85 doesn't mean it's easy to get in. There are heaps out there dying to get into a course like that. It will eventually get you into what you want just like Biomed, so why worry? :)

Also agree with Akirus, if you did your research on Science and found out that it was an alternative pathway to Health Sciences, you probably wouldn't be too upset over it.

Like I said earlier, you aren't losing out on anything, so be excited to start :P

actually i would seriously consider doing science instead because of the greater flexibility in first year..doing more chem and physics would probably help out more with gamsat over stats/maths

Which ones specifically? They all have different prerequisites as far as I know.

yeah you can do all the graduate courses. the only prerequisites for the health sciences are one of anatomy, biochemistry and physiology at second year level(you are doing these anyway cos you are interested in medicine) but also graduate degree in physiotherapy requires anatomy and physiology, and nursing graduate requires just anatomy. so if you do the right ones for med, you will be fine for everything:)

Optom has some kind of physics/optics req, I believe, and there's a specific major for vet. Not sure about the rest, this is just what I've found through discussing my friend's options.

oops i completely forgot about optom. yeah it requires anatomy and physiology (other subjects can be used, but you'll be doing these anyway peddles) and also physics or optom at any tertiary level.

In science, if you haven't done VCE physics and want to do a physics subject in both semester 1 and 2, you would probably do Physics 1: Fundamentals in semester 1 (you CAN do physics 1, but it would be more difficult to do well) and one of the Physics 2 subjects (either the life science based one or the tech based one) in semester 2. The fundamentals subject tries to catch you up with students who have completed yr 11 and 12 physics, so that you are not disadvantaged in 2nd semester. I, and a lot of other students, found the subject fairly difficult. It is fast paced and quite confronting to those who haven't ever done physics. It is, however, possible to get a decent mark with some study and work.
I do believe, that these students are still disadvantaged when beginning semester 2, as VCE physics students have studied some of the topics covered in physics 2 (magnetism, electricity, radiation...), whereas we haven't.

...there's a specific major for vet...
Yep, this is the Animal Health and Disease major. You can, however, keep both the vet and medicine majors open until the end of second year :)
