Are teachers allowed to penalise you for being absent on a sac?
i.e. not allow you to have reading time when the rest of the class did, even when you have a medical reason and provided an approved certificate

If you have followed your school’s SAC absence procedure then they should allow you to do the SAC at a later date. This usually involves letting the teacher/head of VCAA at your school know you will be absent and provide them with a medical certificate once you are back at school, and they should then organise the SAC on a later date for you. They definitely shouldn’t be penalising you for any reason if you have done the right thing, getting sick on SAC days is not the fault of the student and I don’t understand why your school is penalising you for it.

Assuming you have a valid reason, it does say in the fine print that they can change the SAC task (for instance if it was a lab experiment or something, I don't know) for you if you're not able to attend, but it must be of equivalent difficulty etc.
So the task can be different, but equitable, I guess.
And yes, they're kinda required to keep the equitability the same.
