When you get a function that's defined by say f: R (arrow) R, F(x)=x^2 -2 what does the 'f: R (arrow) R" bit mean again? Sorry if this sounds like a dumb question.

saying that f is a function from R to R (explicitly, for every x in R there exists a (unique) value for f(x) that is in R)
Voltaire: "There is an astonishing imagination even in the science of mathematics ... We repeat, there is far more imagination in the head of Archimedes than in that of Homer."
