Food Studies Units 3 & 4 - Key Knowledge and Exam Revision
« on: September 23, 2017, 03:03:47 pm »
+16
Hey everyone,

So I'm studying Food Studies Unit 3 & 4 this year and a few weeks ago I created a document that contains all of the Key Knowledge points from the Study Design.

I have sectioned them into Unit 3 - Food in daily life and Unit 4 - Food issues, challenges and futures. Then for each unit I have divided them up into Outcome 1 and 2. As a word of advice, the chapters next to each point are references for each one (they are applicable to the Food Solutions text).

Hopefully everyone will find this helpful when revising the key knowledge that is all examinable on the end of year exam.

In addition, I added the mark breakdowns for each outcome and also the contributions to the study score.

Have a safe Spring holidays and good luck for exams!! :)

P.S. I wish Food was still a folio subject  :-\

Thank you for the shoutout! ;D

I thought with the new Study Design being implemented this year, that more resources should be contributed for Food Studies. I have just went through the past Food Tech exams and I have made a document containing past multiple-choice questions that are actually still applicable to the new study. Hopefully this will help out with that section of the exam.

Also, here's a quick rundown of the structure and setting of the exam according to the sample 2017 exam given by the VCAA:

Time - 90 minutes (15 mins reading time)
Marks - 100 (15 for the MC and 85 for the short/extended answers)
Sections - A (15 Multiple-Choice Qs) and B (around 11 short answer questions with one extended answer included)
Date & Time - Friday 17th November at 11:45 am to 1:30 pm

Also,  the examination specifications from VCAA state that the short answers can include:

'Questions that refer to visual and/or written material, including
scenarios, statistical data, case studies, records of practical activities, articles, photographs,
diagrams and quotations.'

The VCAA Food Studies SAMPLE EXAM PAPER 2017 can be accessed here: http://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/Documents/exams/technology/foodstudies-samp-w.pdf

I'm back again  :o. Like the multiple choice stuff, I went through all of the past VCAA Food Tech Exams this evening and collated a document that contains all applicable short-answer questions (with a couple of extended answer questions) that do relate to the new Study Design. With some questions I removed components that referred to content from the previous Study Design.

I enjoy going through the previous exams as it is somewhat a type of revision in a way. Don't forget to look above at my previous post containing the MC questions for the answers and also a document that contains content that IS NOT on any of the past exams which means it should be focused on.

Attached is the short-answer questions revision document. Keep revising!  :D

So this will most likely be the final document that I'll upload for now. This one has Multiple-Choice and Short-Answer (with one Extended Response) taken from the 2017 Sample Exam.

I have grouped the questions according to the new content area for the new Study Design. Answers to MC and also the exam specifications are at the bottom of the document.

Hey everyone! I hope that you enjoyed your holidays and are back into the rhythm for the last stretch of Year 12 (we've almost made it  ;D). I just thought that I'd wish anyone that is undertaking Oral or Performance exams good luck. I had my Japanese Oral today and it's an absolute relief once it's over and done with.

Anyways, this is just a message to let everyone know that the front covers of exams/exam materials are now available on the VCAA website for viewing. This may help with dates and also show the structure of each of your exams.

Here's the link to the materials: http://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/Pages/vce/exams/examcovers/2017examindex.aspx

Good luck to everyone and enjoy your final days at school! It's been a wild year but we've all made it  :D

Hey guys, so I'm back again with a final revision document for the Food exam next week on Friday. I hope all of you have kept on top of study but also have taken rest from study. It's important to take a break from study to socialise with friends and just relax. I'm sure that most of you have completed around half of your exams by now so the finish line is in sight!

Within this document, I've went through all of my theory SACs throughout the year and combined all of the questions into one. Everything is separated into Unit 3 & 4 and Outcome 1 & 2.

Good luck everyone! After exams, have a safe and happy summer break  ;D

Does anyone have any suggested answers to the 2017 sample exam?
Does anyone also have any idea of what questions could be asked?

Hey, sorry for the very late reply back to this! I made a short list of what topics might be on the exam tomorrow. Keep in mind, it's fairly hard to predict what VCAA will put on there but here's what I came up with:

Well, by the looks of the sample 2017 VCAA exam, they want to focus on asking us about health and sustainability. There will probably be a question that focuses on the Australian Dietary Guidelines and the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating in the relation to food choices and the influences that shape the choices (social and others). I’d also say, there might be a question asking about the ADG but instead of it being related to health, it would be related to the actual development of the Guidelines

Also, digestion (macronutrient digestion and different functions in the body) and the social/emotional roles of food (restrictive dieting, body image and sharing/celebrating with food) would be key points they would probably focus on.

My Food teacher said that it’s almost guaranteed that there will be some form of question asking about behavioural principles for establishing healthy diets in children and families (exposure, repetition and modelling). Moreover, keep an eye out for questions relating to labelling and becoming an informed consumer (fad diets/foods, analysing the validity of weight-loss claims etc).

As it wasn’t on the sample exam, questions about global food security/insecurity including solutions (technological).

Also a few short questions about functions of ingredients in recipes, cooking methods, food poisoning and ethics

There may be other topics of course! Tonight, go through the textbook, past SACs and practice exams to focus on areas you feel you don't know so well. I know for me, I knew a lot of the Unit 3 content well and the last bit of Unit 4 well but when it came to the environment stuff, I had to go back through chapters 10 to 14 of the Food Solutions text to consolidate my knowledge. It may also help to do around 5-10 questions from each chapter if you'd like just to make sure you've covered the main topics in some detail.

Good luck tomorrow everyone!  :D

You da man. Before the exam tomorrow, and on behalf of all the Food students that have used your resources, I would like to say thank you for all the help you've been with revision for Food. Seriously, there are barely any relevant resources for the subject because it's a new study design/course, so your contributions are hugeeeeee.

And yeah - stuff about digestion is no doubt going to be on the exam cause it's new to the course. Environmental impacts of food production too cause it's been an exam weak spot essentially every year. And for some reason, I have a sneaking suspicion that the 10 marker will be asking us to justify our opinion on whether or not if we would buy organic eggs?? And I'm gonna bet that there's going to be a case study where we're going to have to address the validity of the information/claims it's presenting.

Good luck for tomorrow!!

Champion thanks so much.
I have gotten A's all year as I have found the subject super easy without doing units 1 & 2. I completed 3 & 4 of Ag/hort and Biology last year and I did health and human this year so this is double revision aha. Super helpful as there hasn't been heaps of stuff on forums latley.

Good luck to everyone tomorrow!!
