Hmm, so 2.5 weeks to go until results, and we'd be feeling somewhat nervous now. Only last night I had a few nightmares of crappy results...anyway. Perhaps we could do what they did last year and make a prediction/compare thread!
EDIT: Realised I was a tad too optimistic/arrogant :S sorry guys, but I revised this :D
-
Another person falling victim to a low english score.. I feel for you man :)
-
yeah :S...well if i'm not good at english, well, i don't deserve the highest ATAR scores. oh well!
-
If you get a 45 in english language then you get a 99.95 atar score!
-
LOL if i got 45 in englang I'd be running riot!
-
I heard that if Thushan gets less than 49 in a subject it automatically scales up by an extra 6??
-
Really?... I dont even want to touch atarcalc lol. I dont want to get my hopes up nor have my dreams shattered :(
-
Really?... I dont even want to touch atarcalc lol. I dont want to get my hopes up nor have my dreams shattered :(
Think about it from an optimistic point of view:
1. You choose a score lower than what you get. Once you get your score, you are excited because you got higher than you expected.
2. You choose a score higher than what you get. For the next 2.5 weeks, you are happy and confident that you will do well, and although you might be a little disappointed at the end, your dreams won't be shattered.
-
Without being conservative...here are my predictions <3
English: owned all the sacs but completely screwed up in the exam. So...39 - 42. HOPING FOR 41.
Chem: didn't do so well on sacs, A+ on exam 1, got owned by exam 2 :S ...38 hopefully
Spesh: LOL FAILED ALL SACS (asian-ly) lost 1 on exam 1 but maybe about 10 for exam 2...so another 36-8
Latin: Went ok in sacs and EXAM WAS AWESOME. Think I can manage 34 yay!
Unimaths: Exam 1 was cool but exam 2 was an extreme failure. Hoping to scrape a 5
Chinese and Methods last year: 43 and 39 respectively
Based on ATARcalc: Aggregate = 194.2, ATAR 99.25...wish I could get 99.5 but that's cool too <3

I think pessimism is a better way in this case. You will either be right or pleasantly surprised.

English: A+, except for one A. Exam Wise- Okay? 42 - 46
Math Methods. 90% Overall. Exam 1 smashed, Exam 2, died on the last question. I think I lost like 11 - 15 overall. I"m guessing 38 - 42.
Chemistry: Avg 85 - 90% Exam 1: A Exam 2: A to low A+ 36 - 38?
Literature: A+, except for 1 A.. Exam Wise- Okay? 40 - 45
Vietnamese : SS : 28 . yeah pft.
Economics. 2nd - 3rd rank. Exam? Pretty sure I gunned it. 44+
ATAR CALC: Minimum: 96.75 (Lowest Scores based on estimates)
Maximum: 99.25 given that Economics is SS 47.
-
I'll probably be one of those people who drop out of University and win the lotto
-
Here goes... :P
English: Rank 1, 96/100 each for Unit 3 and 4, hoping for around 50/60 on the exam = 42 SS
Legal Studies: Rank 1, 100/100 for Unit 3 and 98/100 for Unit 4, I think I got around 60/70 on the exam (new study design so hopefully the cutoff is lower) = 43 SS
History Revolutions: Rank 1, 100/100 each for Unit 3 and 4, hoping for around 65/80 on the exam = 40 SS
Business Management: Mid Rank, 85/100 for Unit 3 and 87/100 for Unit 4, probably got around 45/65 for the exam = 35 SS
Latin: Low Rank, 35/50 for Unit 3 and 31/50 for Unit 4, flunked the exam so I probably got 60/100 = 15 SS
Methods: 31 scaled from last year.. yes I hate maths. 8)
Predicted ATAR: 90.50
-
90.4+ and will be die happy....
*runs away*
but seriously
English - 36+
Accounting - 36+
Further - 38+ - dropped 5 on exam 1, around 5 on exam 2?
Japanese SL - 38+
Methods - go away
Uni Jap - 5.0 (was feeling alright after semester 1 then semester 2 assignments + VCE gen con preparation did not mix well.... got a HD and D respectively)
*being a tad conservative here/expecting the worst?*
-
Biology:
Probably rank 15 - 20 / 100 raw MHS (high A/low A+ average) -> in school standardisation -> out of school standardisation; Mid -> high A+
Exam 1: 70
Exam 2: 67-74 - i think probably 70
So hopefully a 50
With the amount of time i've invested into biology; and the current state of my 1/2s, i would be disappointed with anything less than a 50 (seeing as Bio is top 4, each aggregate point is significant).
-
Psychology
Rank 1 SACs
Mid A+ midyear
Mid-high A+ end of year
SS prediction - [48,50]
-
English: U3 93/100 U4 96/100 Exam 8/8/7 = 40ss
Methods: sacs somewhere around 83% exam techfree B+ tech active A = 36ss
revs: U3 89/100 U4 91/100 (rank 1) exam A+ = 44ss
chem: sacs around 90% exam U3 B+ exam U4 B+ = 35ss
viet: U3 44/50 U4 44/50 exam&oral C+ = 31SS
Accounting (2010): sacs around 93% exams 83/90 82.5/90 = 45ss
Legal (2010): sacs originally exactly 80/100 for both U3 and U4, moderated to U3 87/100 U4 93/100 after exam, exam 56/60 = 42ss
atar calc: aggregate 180.2 ATAR 97.00
-
Bio (done already): 42
English: 38
Chem: 43
Methods: 40
Spesh: 42
Physics: 32
ATAR: 97.85
Hoped to do better (the dream was 99.15), but "such is life"
English Lang: rank 1 SACs (94/100, 96/100 in a moderately strong cohort), and i would hazard a guess at ~55-60/75 in the exam. So...38-40.
That's a load of bs right there, pretty sure you'll be easily 45+ ;) Too much modesty :)
-
bahahah no shit...I dunno I didn't feel great coming out of the exam :/
-
pi you'll defs get higher study scores than taht - esp with methods and english :)
I'm feeling more inclined to give this a shot.... I'll see how i feel later today :P
Moderator action: removed real name, sorry for the inconvenience
-
Not too fussed what I get, as long as I get 62+ to get into my course...
Business: 40 (completed last year)
Accounting: Low A+ for mid year (77/90) maybe 80 for end of year so probably 40
Further: 40/40 according to forum answers, then maybe dropped <5 marks on exam 2 so 45
Englang: Rank 2-3, hoping for >C on exam so ~32
Eco: No idea, ~30
Physics: <10
ATAR: 89.35 (would really love a 90 though)
-
English: Rank 1, U3 100/100, U4 100/100, probably 20/60 on the exam, ~22
Methods: Rank 1, U3 100/100, U4 100/100, probably Ds on both exams, ~19
Specialist: Rank 1, U3 100/100, U4 100/100, Probably full marks exam 2, 3/40 exam 1, ~31
Physics: Rank 2 , U3 99/100, U4 100/100, Full marks both exams, ~32 (unit 3 sacs let me down)
Geography: Rank 1, U3 54/57, U4 19/35, Probably E+ on both exams, ~45
Was hoping for 99.95, but will probably get 27.35 which isn't bad
-
TROLOLOL. And you say you're not a troll!? :P
Go back under your bridge ahahah
-
Eng: 41-44
Chem: 43-45
Geo: 46-49
Bio (last year): 45
Methods: 38-40
Physics: 37-39
ATAR: 98.20-99.30 (hoping like crazy it's closer to 99 than 98!)
-
TROLOLOL. And you say you're not a troll!? :P
Go back under your bridge ahahah
No, I am Thushan
-
LOL nice try troll, now quietly slink back to your bridge. :D
-
English: 40
Accounting: 39
Economics: 36
International Studies: 35
Methods: 26
History: revs (last year): 35
HOMG 90.40
I'm screwed! Thats not going to happen. Realistically about 89 :/ Dammed Accounting exam 2!!!
-
I'm trying to be a pessimist so I'm not disappointed on the 16th... but I'm sadly an optimist:
Methods (2010): 50
English: 41-45
Bio: 42-43
Chem: 43-45
Spesh: 43-45 (DAMN YOU EXAM 2!)
Art: 40
ATAR: 99.20 -- I know that would still be amazing, but I would have liked higher... oh well - to quote a certain AN member, "such is life".
-
Accounting (2010): 48
Chinese (2010): 36
English: 39-40
Methods: 47-49
Spesh: 44-45
Chem: 48-49
Physics: 36
ATAR: 99.3 - Yeah, I'd be happy. LOL.
-
Psychology:
Mid year: Mid A+
End of year: B+
I don't know what that equates to but I hope that yields a 35+
-
Nah, I got lucky first exam.
I did shithouse on the second one.... after looking at the suggested answers I was shattered.
What's done's done.
Good luck to everyone! I still don't know how to get the results ... haha.
-
Further Maths:
Rank: 1
Exam 1: 40/40
Exam 2: 53-57/60
Predicted SS: 43-48?
-
ARGH. Why can't they come NOW!?
-
Biology:
Probably rank 15 - 20 / 100 raw MHS (high A/low A+ average) -> in school standardisation -> out of school standardisation; Mid -> high A+
Exam 1: 70
Exam 2: 67-74 - i think probably 70
So hopefully a 50
With the amount of time i've invested into biology; and the current state of my 1/2s, i would be disappointed with anything less than a 50 (seeing as Bio is top 4, each aggregate point is significant).
So 1 in 5 people from MHS score a 50 in biology?!
-
LOL doesn't work that way. SACs are generally well scored, and MHS is crazy, so the top like 20 would get 200/200 after moderation.
-
Okay guys, here goes:
Top 4
English 39 --> 38
Economics 40 --> 42
International Studies 39 --> 42
Legal Studies 43 (from last year)
Bottom 2

Indonesian 50 (last year)
Revolutions 46 (last year)
Renaissance 44-48 hopefully
Bottom 2:
Philosophy 40-44
Methods 28-32
ATAR prediction: 98-99.5
I'd be satisfied with anything over 98.5, really. :S
Aaahh so nervous after typing that out.
-
Dreamt that I got a 99.7 (in my dreams, literally!) and a 41 for English, we'll see if I can make a living out of being a fortune teller come the 16th Dec!
-
^ you don't need to dream about it, it's gonna be reality :D

I'll start (being somewhat conservative):
...
Based on ATARcalc: Aggregate = 201.6, ATAR 99.75...not bad, im happy with that! :D
/endthread.

you obviously haven't experienced the Thushan then. that is being conservative, his standards are just alot higher than yours and most others.
-
thushan, you're much better at english language than you think you are :P you're ranked 1st at scotch...like scotch, that's pretty pro ;)
-
thats very great ppls... all 90+....
well
i m just hoping for a 75+ and get in Bmus Monash..
ESL : 32
Methods : 20... >.> will end up with like 10..
Music performance : 35
Further : very vague.. 38+?
(Already done) Chinese Second Advanced: 26. very great for a chinese..
these 90+ ATAR is going to get me feel even worse than before.. :(
-
There's nothing wrong with having high expectations, just do it tactfully. There's not a problem with somebody stating they have particular goals, just please don't be obnoxious about it. Also, if you want to rant, there's a subforum for that. If you dislike the way someone acts, there's a PM system for that.
Now, can we go back to constructive chat?
-
Spot on Russ. Guys, just try to use your judgement before you post things like this, I personally think you should follow Acinod's posts as an example.
-
Ditto.

My two posts got deleted :(
I shall re-post so I have something to compare with in 2 weeks:
English - 40
Spesh - 45
Methods - 45
Chemistry - 45
Physics - 40
Chinese - 35
ATAR: 99.20
Back to main topic, I think we're all just typing into ATARCALC what our raw scores are and then reading the ATAR of 2010. Shouldn't we consider the insane scaling of Spesh this year?

for those who don't do spesh look at the 2007 atar score given on atar calc. For those who do spesh, the 2010 scores are no different to the 2007 scores.
Im fucking devastated by this silly spesh scaling. for me last years 99.8 will be this years 99.5-6. so stupid.

Wow, that's interesting.. why are the 2007 stats relevant? :S
-
werdna, jdog was saying you have a slightly LOWER chance of getting a 90, because the higher spesh scaling pushes the aggregates up
-
Oh great :S

*just wants 2009 all over again*
*edit*
UNIVERSITY entry cut-offs for 2012 will fall, experts say, making it easier for students who have just finished year 12 to enrol in popular degrees.
Australian Tertiary Admission Ranks are expected to fall under a new system that allows universities to decide how many places they offer, based on the demand from students.
SAVE ME :( ... *goes back to bed*

I don't understand how atar ranks will fall in general. I know it will be harder for some to get high scores becuase of spesh, but i dont get how ATAR will fall all together because of universities.
-
Universities will be having more places, so lesser competition
-
They mean ATAR CUTOFFs not ATARs.
So like maybe if the ATAR cutoff to get into commerce at Monash was say 92 last year, this year the ATAR cutoff could drop to about 89-90 because there are more places available.
Don't fret! :D
-
they weren't very specific

that's a big "could" haha - will be crossing my fingers on that :X
-
Gahhh i just checked atarcalc, stupid peer pressure!
Im not gonna post study scores, but i will post atar predictions :P (i was a bit harsh with my study scores as well lol - i mean i dont want to get over confident)
2010: 94.60
2007: 95.40
I'll take a 95 any day :D
It seems i might fall 1-2 atar points below the clearly in for some monash courses :(
But my teacher was saying that the Go8 Unis will add extra points or something to your atar if you do a lote?... Anyone got any solid info on this?
-
Go8?
-
Group of 8, the best 8 universities in the country. Our (bad) version of the golden triangle or the ivy league.
And I've never heard anything about extra points for a LOTE post ATAR release
-
Group of Eight:
http://www.go8.edu.au/
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Group_of_Eight_%28Australian_universities%29
-
Monash, Melbourne, Sydney, UNSW, Adelaide, UQ, ANU, Western Australia
oh and btw Bazza16, I can't reply to your PM cause I'm using an iPad and yes I'm interstate
-
I know UQ gives bonus for LOTE
-
I'll try to be a pessimist with these:
Business Management: 49
Chemistry: 49
Physics: 49
Methods: 49
English: 48 (Expecting English to let me down as per usual...)
Just kidding...
Not really sure what my ATAR is looking at because I'm not sure what impact derived exam scores have. If I had to estimate, I would say in the low 90's.
I'm really just hoping to get that 91.2 (or whatever it is this year) for Eng@Monash, otherwise I'll have to hope SEAS will pull me through :)
-
Erghh.... Maybe it had something to do with Monash's middle band... I dunno just making stuff up now :P But yeh it would be mad if some of the clearly in drops by 1-2 points XD
-
Pessimistic:
English (ESL) Score: 37
Mathematical Methods (CAS) Score: 37
Specialist Mathematics Score: 38
Chemistry Score: 40
Physics : 38
ATAR 95.1
Should be :
English (ESL) Score: 40
Mathematical Methods (CAS) Score: 39
Specialist Mathematics Score: 43
Chemistry Score: 44
Physics : 42
ATAR 98.15
meh... both should get me into Monash BEng/BSci(Chem)
-
this may be off topic..
but could someone post a link to the article which contains info regarding the decrease in ATAR clearly-in for courses this year?
i'm overseas at the moment and the search bar is completely out of whack. can't find it anywhere.
-
University places to open up as entry scores fall

French:30
International Studies:40
Literature:40
Australian History (2010): 38
ATAR: 93.45
Well, actually, my worst case is something where I get about 82, but whatverssssss
Realistically, according to kazdawg:
English:45
Further:38
French:30
International Studies:40
Literature:40
Australian History (2010): 38
ATAR: 96.30

study score prediction asking for a friend who does accounting:
sacs low A+
mid year 79/90
end of year 81/90
thanks
-
Ok here goes...
English - 96/100 u3 + 98/100 u4 + approx 50-55/60 exam so hopefully a 40
National politics - 80/100 u3 + 95/100 u4 + approx 70/80 exam = 35
French - 90/100 approx u3 and u4 and alright on exam so 30
Revs - 85/100 u3 + 95/100 u4 + 65/80 exam so 30-32
Biology - 90/100 u3 and u4 + c+ mid year and roughly 65/75 end year exam = 35 (optimistic)
Texts and traditions - 30 (last year)
So 89.65 according to atarcalc. Though as long as I get over 88 I'll be happy. Though 90 would be good
-

You will get heaps higher than a 32 for Revs. :)

Agreed.
In fact 65/80 makes you viable for 40+ possibly
-
I don't know, that's being very generous for an exam mark probs between 55 and 65.
But oh how I would love it if I did, considering my teacher wanted a 45 :/ haha
Thanks for the vote of confidence :)
-
arghhh just gonna do it for comparison on the 16th only, actually haven't thought about them for about 10 days!

JDog DY in 2009 (the chess freak) dropped 3 in exam 1 and got 50.
my mistake... were the 2009 exams easier than this years?
I also forgot that losing marks in exam 2 is alot worse than in exam 1.
-
I also forgot that losing marks in exam 2 is alot worse than in exam 1.
Out of curiosity, why is this the case?
Shouldn't each mark for each paper weight the same?
(paper one is worth 22% and has half the marks of paper 2 which is 44%)
-
Each exam is marked through z-scores, so the 22%/44% argument is valid.
-
I don't even know if I am correct in saying that.
ive just been told

mate, how did you underpredict english lang and english so much?
haha, i guess we all try to do it so we don't get dissapointed.
I know we all have our real hopes and predictions that we don't openly air

@ JDog. EngLang is impossible to know how well you went in.
And as for the English exam...I kinda just 'rocked up' to that without doing any study so I wasn't expecting much haha.
I'm sure you will be fine dude. Best of luck with Monash Med. :)

i know who you're talking about!!! AND I can confirm that he did indeed drop 3 marks in exam 1. His sister told me.

His sister told me too!

JDog, Thushan and pi, for what it's worth, I think the reason why losing marks on Maths Exam 2 is worse than losing marks on Maths Exam 1 is because Exam 2 tends to be harder, thus reducing the standard deviation (why exactly, I'm not sure), so each mark lost is a greater portion of the standard deviations lost.
If the two exams were of equal difficulty, we might see something like this:
Exam 1, Mean = 20, SD = 10
Exam 2, Mean = 40, SD = 20.
Now, each mark lost from Exam 1 is 0.1 of a SD, and each mark lost from Exam 2 is initially 0.05 of an SD. But Exam 2 is weighted double, so each mark lost turns out to be 0.1 of your final weighted score.
However, because Exam 2 is generally more difficult than Exam 1, we get something more like this:
Exam 1, Mean = 20, SD = 11
Exam 2, Mean = 40, SD = 18
So, each mark lost from Exam 1 is 1/11th of an SD, and each mark lost from Exam 2 is 1/18th of an SD, but is doubled to become 1/9th. Therefore, a person who gets 0/40 and 80/80 will do better than a person who gets 40/40 and 40/80. Note that in both these cases, the mean does not matter.
To give an actual example, I'll use my Methods scores from last year.
For Exam 1, I got 32/40, which was +0.95 SD's, multiplied by 0.22 (the weighting), to give 0.21
For Exam 2, I got 74/80, which was +1.78 SD's, multiplied by 0.44 to give 0.78. So, we'll say I have a final exam score of 0.99
Had I lost 6 more marks on Exam 1, and fullmarked Exam 2 (so still 14 marks lost in total), my final score would be around 0.22(0.42) + 0.44(2.10) = 1.017. Had I fullmarked Exam 1, and lost 8 more marks on Exam 2, my final score would be around 0.22(1.65) + 0.44(1.34) = 0.954.
Anyways, tl;dr, if you have to lose a certain number of marks, better to do it on an easier exam, where the standard deviation is higher (edited, I initially wrote lower), and each mark is worth 'less'.

What about for further maths? whats considered the harder exam?
-
Good luck bazza hope you get this :)
-
What about for further maths? whats considered the harder exam?
For Further Maths, it's a bit different to the cases of Methods and Biology that were discussed.
That's because for Methods and Bio, the weighting reflects the number of marks on each exam (Exam 2 is out of 80 and Exam 1 is out of 40 for Methods, so Exam 2 gets weighted twice as much. and for Biology, both exams have 75 marks each, so they are weighted equally).
However, for Further, Exam 1 is out of 40, and Exam 2 is out of 60, but both are weighted equally (33% each, according to the VCE Assessment Handbook), so based on that information, since the standard deviation of Exam 2 is higher, each mark lost on Exam 2 is actually worth less than a mark on Exam 1.(so 40/40 and 59/60 beats 39/40 and 60/60)

Yup, that was my point. :D
Except low standard deviation does not necessarily mean a "hard" exam. It just means that all the scores tend to be bunched up rather than spread out. A low standard deviation pretty much means an exam that is either too easy (all the scores are bunched up towards the high end) or too hard (the scores are bunched up towards the low end).

Business Management - 35
Latin - 15
ATAR - 90.50
Got 4 points higher in English, the same in Legal, 3 points lower in History, 1 point higher in BM and 3 points higher in Latin. And 2 points higher for the ATAR.. feeling pretty good about it all!

90.4+ and will be die happy....
*runs away*
but seriously
English - 36+
Accounting - 36+
Further - 38+ - dropped 5 on exam 1, around 5 on exam 2?
Japanese SL - 38+
Methods - go away
Uni Jap - 5.0 (was feeling alright after semester 1 then semester 2 assignments + VCE gen con preparation did not mix well.... got a HD and D respectively)
*being a tad conservative here/expecting the worst?*
heh, now the next step of worries is... WILL FURBOB GO TO MELB UNI? was quite over my expectations and pleased :D
was a bit let down by Accounting considering it was equal favourite with Japanese but ended up being my worst subject after scaling and probably didnt live up to my potential for Japanese but anything 40+ in a LOTE is good enough.

ATAR: 97.85
Hoped to do better (the dream was 99.15), but "such is life"
Bio: couldn't have got that wrong
English: Higher :)
Chem: Over-predicted - too cocky
Methods: Higher
Spesh: Expected way too much here
Physics: Pleasantly surprised
ATAR: 1.5 higher than expected :) :) (exceeded the 99.15 dream too!)
Got that right too!

Biology:
Probably rank 15 - 20 / 100 raw MHS (high A/low A+ average) -> in school standardisation -> out of school standardisation; Mid -> high A+
Exam 1: 70
Exam 2: 67-74 - i think probably 70
So hopefully a 50
With the amount of time i've invested into biology; and the current state of my 1/2s, i would be disappointed with anything less than a 50 (seeing as Bio is top 4, each aggregate point is significant).
accurate in the thread, though afterwards i changed my prediction to 49 in my sig
-
I'm trying to be a pessimist so I'm not disappointed on the 16th... but I'm sadly an optimist:
Methods (2010): 50
English: 41-45
Bio: 42-43
Chem: 43-45
Spesh: 43-45 (DAMN YOU EXAM 2!)
Art: 40
ATAR: 99.20 -- I know that would still be amazing, but I would have liked higher... oh well - to quote a certain AN member, "such is life".
English: Accurate
Bio: 1 point higher
Chem: Accurate
Spesh: 1 point lower
Art: 3 points higher :O
Meh, pretty accurate overall. I put down the lower ATAR for those ranges, but I think the spesh scaling made it much higher than ATARcalc predicted...
