Title: Increase your employability with Upskill while helping ATAR Notes!

It gives me great pleasure to announce that we recently inked a sponsorship deal with ASX200 firm Talent2, and their training program provider Upskill.

What is Upskill?
Upskill is a provider of job skills education. They are a subsidiary of the international HR consulting firm Talent2, an industry leader in employment education.

What are the courses? How do they work?
Upskill provides training for certificates in Business, Business Administration,  and for the Diploma of Management.

These courses were identified by the Victorian government as a sound investment in the Victorian workforce in order to produce a more efficient and capable set of workers for the market.

They require on average 50-60 hours of time over (up to) 10 months to complete. The best part is, they're all online so you don't even have to leave your computer chair! You learn on a case-related basis different skills for different job situations. There are units with coursework that you complete, and after you complete all the units you have finished the certificate and are accredited. Furthermore you will have access to the learning materials once the course is finished as well for future reference.

How will the courses help me?
These are all qualifications which enhance employment skills, making you more efficient at a job you may currently hold, or more appealing to prospective employers. The courses contain several modules which are highly applicable to the workplace, and are skills which prospective employers often look for when recruiting.

This will look great on your resume. It’s a tertiary qualification that you can put on your resume before you’ve even started university!

The workforce is becoming more and more competitive, and these are certificates which will certainly give you an edge over other job applicants. These programs are rated so highly that Chartered Accountants and the Law Institute of Victoria recommend the Upskill courses to all of its members in order to increase their job skills.

How much will it cost me?

Nothing! The courses are funded by the Victorian government and the scholarships that Upskill is providing to students to cover the remaining costs not funded by government.

How does this help ATAR Notes?
For every student we refer to Upskill, ATAR Notes will receive money for your enrollment. There is literally nothing for you to lose by doing this. You’ll be learning better job skills, you’ll receive a proper accreditation certificate which will significantly boost your resume, and you’ll be helping out ATAR Notes all at the same time!

Do I have to complete the courses in any particular order?
The ideal course of progression is from Cert III in Business to Cert IV in Business Administration, to the Diploma of Management. You may skip the Cert III in Business if you wish to do so, though it is highly recommended as you will gain an additional qualification with additional modules. You must complete the Cert IV in Business Administration prior to completing the Diploma of Management.

Please note:
The Diploma of Management is quite a prestigious degree/qualification, and therefore it is generally made available to those who are in a supervisory roles in their workplace, therefore if you currently do not have a job, it is ideal for you to take the Cert III in Business followed by the Cert IV in Business Administration. The application process for the Diploma of Management may also be subject to an additional interview. If you have any questions as to what constitutes a 'supervisory role' just ask.

Do not enrol in the Cert IV or Diploma if you are currently in the application process for the Monash University MBBS.

Is there any relevance to VCE?
Some of the modules in the Cert III in Business and Cert IV in Business Administration are highly relevant to those present in the VCE VET Business subject, and you can use this knowledge as a method of preparation for this subject.

Can I get any help with the course?
Whilst everything is online, you are allowed free access to a tutor for the course to email, call, or even meet up with in person to get help with going through the course.

Alternatively, I've created a section here for you guys to ask each other questions if needed.
Post all UpSkill course related questions here!

Is there a catch?
There is no catch, however you must be informed that the scholarship that Upskill awards applies if and only if you complete the first two units of the course in the first month (roughly 2-4 hours of work), and you must then go on to complete the course as per your training plan (50-60 hours over up to 10 months). If you cannot fulfill these requirements, you will be charged a one-time fee of $187.50 for the course, which is the value of the scholarship provided by Upskill.

How do I sign up?

Visit this link and fill in your details to check whether you are eligible and someone from UpSkill will get back to you - http://upskillonline.com.au/s/atar

At this stage, we are only taking expressions of interest. Enrolments will not re-open until early January, and may be subject to some changes. If you are interested, fill in your details on the accompanying link

Would this be manageable with no business background knowledge whatsoever? (never done any business unit nor a subject in vce/highschool)

Nonetheless, this opportunity will be massive to our community, nice job taiga!

Post by: taiga on December 05, 2011, 08:08:49 pm
Yeah I had zero business background at the start of this year and completed the Cert IV in Business Administration without any major issue. It's mainly focussed on skills that you'd apply in a workplace rather than a theoretical understanding of Business' so it can pretty much be done by anyone.

Also thanks, it's a pretty massive deal that we've managed to secure, so we're looking forward to getting people signed up to have something to add to their CV's during the holidays. If there are enough people on board we'd be happy to make an area for you guys to discuss it as well (though the course content is not that difficult so you should manage :) )

I just finished Year 12 and going to Uni.

In "What is the highest level of qualifications you have completed?*", do I put 'Currently Studying' or 'High School'?

Definitely doing this if I am eligible for a scholarship. This is the thing you told me about on chat right tiaga? Either way, it sounds excellent.

What a great opportunity, and a great time to start.

Do you think the cert IV in bus admin can be completed before Uni starts again?

Definitely :)

Your highest qualification would be high school. Most of you will be eligible unless you have completed a Cert IV in Retail or something through work (in which case you would only be eligible for a diploma), or if you have completed a Bachelors degree (no eligibility).

If you are currently in the middle of studying, you're completely free to sign up though.

This is ideal for year 12s that finished school, or uni students on their break. I personally slammed out the course within a few days (very high intensity), but I'm more than happy to organize a subforum for this where you guys can chat to each other about questions, which will make them easily completable.

You would be able to complete the Cert III AND Cert IV (have not done the Dip. Man, so can not speak) extremely comfortably prior to uni starting.

Most of you should be eligible for the scholarship. Sign up for it, and a rep from there will get back to you very soon about it. If they don't, just PM me and I'll try and accelerate it through.

And yeah it's definitely an amazing opportunity, I've been working on getting this for dozens of hours over the last few weeks, having a bunch of meetings and phone calls, but it feels good to have it up and running :)

If you have any questions, feel free to ask :)

Being the in process of doing a CertIV in Financial Services i can also testify that the course is not too demanding, reasonably useful, looks pretty damn good on a CV, plus it's free! Definitely recommended :)

This can be done in year 11, even in year 9 or 10, you just need to be ABOVE 15 years old :)

You CAN do the Cert IV without having done the CertIII, but you CANNOT go straight into doing the diploma, you are however available to get funding to do two programs i believe, e.g. i plan to do the diploma after i finish my CertIV and it's my understanding that it will be funded

Yeah I think I'll try to do the Diploma of Management. Otherwise I'll be the most unqualified CEO to ever live. I have no commerce/business training whatsoever!

Wait so the scholarship is for the Cert III, Cert IV AND Diploma??

Sounds good... think I'll look into it...
Title: Re: Increase your employability with Upskill while helping ATAR Notes!
Post by: taiga on December 05, 2011, 11:40:01 pm
The scholarship's should last for a while, but once the government pulls funding from this program, you will have to pay around $4000 for the Cert IV, so it's quite ideal that you get in quickly :)

AN will endorse this program for as long as it is funded for you guys :)

Once their reps get back to enough people, and if there is enough demand for it, I'll get a sub-forum organized.

About time Dan :P Took me a good 45 seconds of convincing to get you to do this.

Just a Q though: This won't affect VTAC courses will it? Because MBBS specifically requires you not to have commenced ANY tertiary studies since finishing year 12 - would these certificates/diploma count?

I always imagined that line was there so you couldn't be in a Bachelor of Biomedicine for example and then re-apply after 1st year and then 2nd year, but I don't wanna risk it. Will find out the official word (if they get back to you first funkydunky just forward the email through to me too :) )

Because they took the trouble of splitting it into 2 dot points, I think we (2011 leavers) are classified as current year 12 students for MBBS admissions, so it shouldn't affect us. Can't hurt to call them and ask anyway though! I signed up too, well done on organizing the partnership :)

3. have not fully completed an Australian qualification at the same level or higher than that which you aim to enrol. Upskill offers Cert III, IV and Diploma (You can currently be enrolled into a course,Tafe or University, so long as you haven't completed that course or degree).

I've done a certificate III in hospitality so that mean I'm not eligible to complete III but instead the IV and Diploma?

Added a few things.

I would recommend for a year 12 leaver to begin with the Cert III in Business and then continue with the Cert IV in Business Administration, particularly if you are not in a supervisory role in your workplace/volunteer organization etc. The Cert III in Business is still valued by employers as it has modules which are not included in the Cert IV.

Most people eligible for the Diploma of Management would probably be in university and have been in the workplace (though some high schoolers who have been working for a while may be eligible).

The Certificates are generally seen as an additional factor to getting employed/standing out in your current workplace, and the Dip. Man is generally to do with standing out in your current workplace / moving onto bigger things.

Will this interfere with the criteria set out by the Monash University Faculty of Medicine?
No, the faculty of medicine states that you either have to be a year 12 completing VCE, or someone who has completed VCE in the last two years and has not begun any tertiary qualifications. You will be allowed to undertake the Monash MBBS if you have a Cert III or Cert IV.

Best start with the Cert III, then do the Cert IV.

It's unlikely you're going to be eligible for the Diploma at this stage, you need to have experience in a supervisory role. I'm pretty sure you'll still be eligible for a funded Diploma after that, I'll confirm with you soon, but as I said, you still need to have that supervisory experience.

That said if you do think you have the right experience then by all means go for it :)

Are you under 18? If so, there's a section on the enrolment that requires parental permission. Otherwise, your parents won't have to know. (I almost went to get my Mum to sign it, then I was like "hang on, I'm 18! I don't have to get permission!" I felt grown up)

You need parental permission if you're under 18. (form signing)

It uses flash presentation sorta things, not very intensive on data, but to be on the safe side, expect the whole thing to be ~500mb (that's what I estimate)

I'll just wait until March next year then...
Where is the cancel button? Or do I have to wait for him to call me before I can cancel it?

Problem is I haven't heard from him today and I'm at work all day tomorrow, should I be worried or will there be time to enrol this coming week?

What if I did Cert IV and then signed up for the diploma after? Would I still be able to complete the course for free. Or should I sign up for the diploma now while doing the Cert IV?

Hey guys please be patient with waiting for the calls. Tim is the only one working on enrolments at the moment so just wait and you should receive your call by the weekend. Pm me before you call/email him so the process isn't delayed. Try to also have a printer and scanner that you can access to get in as soon as possible.  This batch of enrolments end on Monday so get in before then.

I did, but only because he said to do so in the voicemail he left.

For others, I would advise to wait, he has quite a number of people to get through and you'll eventually be called, make sure you pick up when he does ;)

For those who have already been called, make sure you get in your application forms in by Monday - lunchtime.

Okay, just called up, I'll get the details of everyone doing the Cert IV and take you out/transfer you to Cert III, you can't start Cert IV until you've been admitted (January or something).

Also the lady at admissions said to email
[email protected] for any further questions/clarification.

Thanks for bringing it to my attention Funkyducky. Am a tad annoyed though because this isn't what I was told earlier.

The first batch Cert III's get processed for enrolments today, and the Cert IV's will not be done till Friday, so don't stress about it.

I'll ensure that no one that is applying for Monash MBBS is enrolled in Cert IV.

I just got called about the cert III, so I think the call I got this morning was about the cert IV.

EDIT: just checked the website, I've been enrolled in cert iv. Can I PM you taiga with my details so you can unenrol me?
Title: Re: Increase your employability with Upskill while helping ATAR Notes!

Yup just had a chat to Tim.

He's going to text all the students that indicated Monash Med during the call about this.

I'll take a list of names, and get you un-enrolled from Cert IV.

Thankfully no one has signed up for just Cert IV that indicated they want to do Medicine, so it's all right.

Anyone else that is concerned, just PM me with your real name and I'll get you delisted from Cert IV. You have until Friday to do this, at which point I'll ensure everyone is double checked that they're not interested in MBBS before being enrolled.

Hey everyone. Fantastic government initiative, and an enterprising company which funds the difference! Very smart business move by Taiga, Upskill et al.

Just wondering if it's possible to do the Cert IV in Small Business Management, as this is of much more relevance to me. Other groups do offer it, but not with the scholarship (wouldn't mind saving $200 if possible). Just as an aside, if I CAN do it with you guys, I will enroll both me and my girlfriend in Cert IV and Diploma in Management ($16k minimum for you guys :P)

Thanks!

It is a completely ridiculous rule by Monash, many people have to do Cert IVs for work, and the training providers aren't aware of this rule either. May have to try and ask for the reasoning behind it next time I call.
Title: Re: Increase your employability with Upskill while helping ATAR Notes!

Yeah, I double-checked with Monash and they were like "nope, you defs can't do a cert IV". But hey, the Monash admissions people at my Med interview today were REALLY nice, so I guess you can blame it on the admin people/higher ups, not the admissions people.

Oh it's never the fault of the people on the phone/taking the interviews, it's just a terrible restriction from higher up. Messing with medicine admissions is an incredibly tough task, but I'd love to at least find out why those with a Cert IV are not allowed to enrol.

Okay cool. And for the step 3 enrollment process where it asks for school details do I put at school year 12 even though I've finished?

I'm enrolled in both Cert III and IV and the requirement that I must finish 2 units in the first month in order to not incur a enrollment fee got me confused. I have already finished the first 2 units of Certificate IV (enrollment of cert IV finished before III). Do I also have to finish the first 2 units of Certificate III in the first month as well?

I have to do Cert IV; if I do Cert IV, is this going to affect my application for Melb Uni or any overseas unis? And just wondering is extension program considered tertiary study?

This will not effect anything except mbbs but if you want to be extra cautious, just email the general admissions of your desired university. Cert iv I'd not recognized overseas so it should not effect overseas applications.

You must complete the first two units of each certificate.

I did this this year and was actually pretty neat. The online tests are really easy, albeit a drag to do.
Just make sure to submit the IT Tasks on time unlike I did. I submitted the last one by late October which was supposed to be in by late-June-July.  I'm still yet to receive my certificate of completion because of that :P

Taiga, it's not a problem for me because I intend to see the course through, but it may affect those who are enrolling to see what it's like, but plan on only completing two units if they decide it's not for them. You suggest they won't be charged so long as they do the two units before dropping out, but the enrolment pack states that both the two units must be completed in the first month, and that the course must be fully completed in the long term in order to retain the scholarship and avoid a fee.

Is there a catch?
There is no catch, however you must be informed that the scholarship that Upskill awards applies if and only if you complete the first two units of the course in the first month (roughly 2-4 hours of work). If you can’t complete those units, you will be charged a one-time fee of $187.50 for the course, which is the value of the scholarship provided by Upskill.

Quote
To meet the requirements of the scholarship you must:
  • complete 2 units within 30 days of receiving your enrolment details in either a Certificate III/IV level
course or 1 unit within the first 6 weeks of enrolling into a Diploma level course,
  • complete the qualification as per the signed Training Plan, and
  • fit one or more fee exemption categories listed below.
If you fail to meet the above requirements you’ll be invoiced the applicable enrolment fee to your
course level; $187.50 for either Certificate III/IV level, $375 for Diploma level. This will become
immediately payable.

Only apply for Cert III and IV, I think I'll run a screening process for Diploma of Management in mid-january. It is a heavy course, and if people that can't manage it enrol they WILL end up having to pay the enrolment fee if they pull out.

Hi guys!

My name is Tim Joiner. I am the account director for ATAR and Monash University. I will be trying my absolute hardest to remake calls that were unsuccessful as well as get through the new registrations by COB today. Please know that I am trying very hard to get to you all. If I am unsuccessful, I will resume calls to students next week. Although we wont be enrolling students over the christmas break (because the enrolments team wont be in), I will still work to get students the info they need as well as field any questions they may have. That way, when the enrolments team return in early January I'll have a nice stack of forms to give them!   ;D

Please don't hesitate in sending me emails at [email protected] should you have any concerns or questions.

Regards,
Tim

p.s. BEST OF LUCK TODAY WITH THE VCE RESULTS!!!

 :o

Not awkward at all guys! I just figured this may be a great way for students to provide feedback rather than email me or call me (which may seem too formal) Also, since my post this morning I have had students email me with their unique situations (ie travelling for a while, but still want to sign up) that way I could get them through.

Back to work now! (*gutted* it's too nice outside!!)

Regards,
Tim

As a side note. As of Monday this coming week, in the eyes of the government we will "be in the month of January for enrolment purposes" As of Jan 1, we will require to physically sight student ID's. I am open to suggestions to make this happen effectively. My best idea so far is to have a stall at Melbourne Central or QV (a point easily accessible by all) where students could bring their ID's and forms. It also makes it easier for students to drop off forms if they cannot get to a scanner.

Any ideas welcome.

I also would like to say that in mid-late Feb, an option for students will be to take their ID and forms to a post office. We are setting up that program now.

Hope everyone is happy with their results.

The reason we recommend both is because they address different criteria, which is something which prospective employers will have a look at as well. You're free to just do the Cert IV if you wish, but obviously having both would put you at an advantage.

They are still making calls this week.

One set should receive login details if they have sent in their forms, and the other set are those who expressed interest and will get everything sorted out so they can begin the course in early January.

If you cbf at this stage, I'd be a bit worried. You'll have nothing to do in January, and if you decide to reapply then it's going to be a lot more of a hassle (+ you've pretty delayed the process for everyone else if you're going to do that). Not trying to guilt you into it or anything, but that's the case. If you seriously don't think you can do it (it's not a difficult), don't apply.

when it says you have to finish 2 units within the first month does that mean by the end of December (i.e. now) or 30 days since registering? I registered fairly late into the month a few days before Christmas and was wondering if I needed to finish the 2 units by now or if I still have time..

Hi all,

I figure I would let students enjoy their time off over the holiday period. I will resume calls this week. Please do not worry.  As for the double enrolments, if you have signed up for both courses, we ask (for you to qualify for our scholarship) that you do two units of EACH certificate you enrol in within 30 days of being enrolled.

Please let me know if you guys have any further questions.

sorry if this has been covered already, but it appears some of the certs mentioned in the original post aren't approved by the RTO in Victoria, namely:
'Upskill provides training for certificates in Business, Business Administration  and for the Diploma of Management.'

Unfortunately their training providers might come under several different codes.

You'd be looking for 'UpSkill', 'Talent2', and 'OriginHR'

That said, I'm not sure what you mean by saying 'valid and able to be used'. No one is going to say that your Cert isn't 'usable', the tick is an indication of whether it can be delivered, not the actual approval of the course. Even then, I don't think many people will say something that is deliverable and valid in NSW is worth 0 in VIC.

Also it's the Victorian Government that is giving you the bulk of your funding/scholarship.

I'll contact them to find out why that tick isn't there if it's enough to put you off.

Hi guys,

So I had an idea today. I note that many are beginning to be disheartened having not received a call yet. The reason I call students individually is to get an idea of what you are studying and to see how a program like Upskill could help with some key soft skills.  I also note that the process of individual calls makes getting to students quite slow.

In response to this. I figured (as we have to physically sight a students ID during the month of January), that I would hold information sessions about Upskill certificates at the big Universities (Melbourne, Monash, Deakin, La Trobe)  At these sessions students would be able to ask all the questions they want about the course, listen to me talk about the features, benefits and qualification criteria. Then if students wish, they could fill out the forms then and there (no more printing and scanning back) and they could also show me their IDs. This would dramatically increase the amount of students I could get to in one go. That being said it would be a little less personal. So I would hope that students would still call and email me.

I will be drafting an email today to get out to the students remaining to be contacted. These sessions will be brief and will also severely cut down the time the enrolments process takes.

I just thought it could be beneficial to students who want to get started ASAP. The sooner I organize this the sooner students can get started. If you haven't heard from me yet, expect an email tonight!!

Let me know your thoughts.

Regards,
Tim

In regards to finishing 2 units in the first month so you don't have to pay up; I have completed the first two units and I was just wondering do they have to be fully corrected to be classed as "complete" because all the assessments for both units have been marked and have a tick next to them apart from the two end of unit assessments which are yet to be marked - and my month is up on the 16th this month.

Thanks :)

You won't be penalized if it's a result of delayed marking.

Obviously to be safe, try to finish 3-4 days before your deadline :)
