Got 44 in Spesh. Thought i only dropped one mark in both combined  :(. Eagerly awaiting SOM to see what happened. Anyone surprised/dissapointed with SOM for Spesh?
Oh, and well done Bazza16 for awesome Bio score. Really commendable effort.  ;)

Yeah really surprised. Lost 11 marks total for Methods, get 44. Lost 7.5 marks in Spesh, got 42.

So 7.5 marks in spesh lost 8 SS...(and yeah, I was #1 rank)

That's a big surprise their. Results wise, sounds like Methods was again a statistically harder exam than Spesh. Also, explains why it was so hard to get 45+ in spesh this year. Friend got 49 and thought he full marked both (at MHS, with the SAC scaling, that would generally have to be 50)

Probably because spesh was quite easy this year, hell I even thought both spesh exams were easier than the methods exams, so those stupid errors in exam 1 that I made (Luken you know what I'm on about) cost me more than usual! But the scaling paid off for it. Not ordering a SOM since I want to try and forget those idiotic mistakes I made.

A+ cutoff 47
Assuming out of 60?
Spesh - SS 42
Exam 1 35/40 (B+ cutoff 32.5-35.5/40)
WOW! B+ cutoff = lose 4.5 marks? That Exam must've been quite "easy"

IMO, many people may have been dogged by SACs that were really hard. SACS may have come into play as exam was not that great of a differentiator as compared to MM exams

Yep. And yeah, not really any differentiator questions...shame I had to make stupid mistakes :(

Yeah no doubt, I got to a pretty average school so that wouldn't have helped me at all..

Hahaha yeah I know the feeling, I thought that 4 marks in exam 1 and (what I thought) was full marks exam 2, I'd be a safe bet. Kind of a bit of a shock when I looked at results :o

Btw, in terms of spesh, I'm thinking I lost 1 mark on exam 1 and lost 4 marks on exam 2, which seems reasonable, considering Luke lost 7.5 marks for a 42

I found that the 4 marks lost on exam 2, the a = i question and the last part of the last question (volume) were kinda differentiator questions, i kicked myself afterwards cause i should have got them, but dammit, i swear you would have had to get 40 and 80 to have gotten a 50 this year in spesh

Where do u get the A+ cut-offs for end of year exams?
You can get them by:

- ordering a statement of marks. This will give you the cutoff for the grade you receive (seeing you got 5 50's I'm assuming you would've received A+ for all of those subjects [any bets you're interested in spesh, though])

- having a search around all the statement of marks threads and hoping that someone received an A+ in the subject you're looking for

- waiting for the grade distributions to come out

Despite the low A+ of Methods Exam 2, 2 marks still knocked you off the fifer :o

yeah, I was really surprised at the English mark, I didn't expect to do that badly in the Language Analysis, I swear I'm actually annoyed cause it was a bad article, like I reckon I'm reasonable at Language Analysis, I'm not that bad! =.=

yeah, I kind of expected it for methods though, like even though the A+ cut-off is low, there would still be a high concentration near the 100% mark, I know that 40/40 and 79/80 would get the 50 though (friend's statement).

Hey, just out of curiosity, my friend got A+ for all GAs on eco and 87.5/90 and ended up with a 44 (the exam score has returned a premier's in the past). Does anyone know why eco was hard to score highly in this year/ know anything about why this could have happened?
The exam median for eco was...?

It could well simply be that the A+s for the other two GAs were very low - a victim of scaling perhaps?

I know someone got a 50 with 86.5/90. I definitely dropped at least 2 marks... probably more.

in a cohort like economics, which is fair small, sacs matter considerably more than what people think. I was on the receiving end of bad sacs as well.

Eh, MHS doesn't *necessarily* mean anything though; SAC scaling is subject exclusive, after all, and even MHS could have a weak economics department?

It could be worth him getting a statement of study score, though, as it will tell him his numerical SAC marks before and after scaling.

With the SoSS does it give you your mark out of say 100 for SACs?

Title: Re: Statement of Marks - Discussion Thread
Post by: hala_madrid on January 05, 2012, 06:04:27 pm
I got all multis correct and overall got 82.5/90. My sacs weren't great, ranked 13 out of about 35 in a strong cohort (number of ss ranging all the way from 40-47, which i guess is great for a relatively niche subject like eco). SACs ended up scaling to 94/100, which i think is the A+ cut off. So i guess, 50% was a low A+, while the other 50% was a medium-high A+, which yielded a study score of 42. Also the A+ cut off was higher than previous years, so looks like sacs have a fair influence

Pretty sure thats wrong. We had many 40+ scores including a couple of raw 49-ers. Thats very good in comparison to most eco cohorts imo.

From the people who had their scores publicly posted MHS had 49, 47, 46, 44, 42, 41, 41, 40. I wouldn't say that's a necessarily weak cohort, unless an excessive amount of people study the subject there (which is improbable?)

Thats not including the year 11s (cos mhs stuffed up the publication permissions) that did eco, whch includes a 50 and a 49 afaik.

Thushan, and others, I don't know the cut-off for Unit 4 Physics - I got a Statement of Study Score, didn't get an Exam Marks Statement for Physics. I only got Exam Marks Statement for English and Spesh.

In regards to Economics, the fact that SACs are 50% means a lot, like in English SACs are 50% and no doubt, SACs really bailed me out of trouble, you wouldn't expect a 42 with an exam score of 45/60. (A is 42 to 46)

Reason for <=197/200 in SACs in English: Looking at Sickle's scores (SS 50), Sickle lost 6 marks all up. I lost 5 marks in the exam, so if I lost 2 marks in SACs, i would have lost 7 marks all up and most likely got a 49. Since I got a 48, I must have lost 8 or more marks all up, hence <=197 in the SACs. Since I got rank 1 at MHS sacs, does this mean nobody got >197 in SACs at MHS? Curious to know.

BTW: bombed that Language analysis... :)

Unlikely to get Premiers for Chem though. :)

Got English today.

GA1 95 --->98/100
GA2 100 --->100/100
GA3 47/60

SS 43

47 was the A+ cut-off. FML Text response 18, Context 15, LA 14.
I reckon it's partly cos I didn't really talk about the pictures :S Little surprised, got "definitely 10" for my practice exam LA and another I did pre-exam, so I didn't do any LAs during swotvac, it was my best section... oh well. Now I know where I lost marks, I can have my peace of mind. A 7 and 8 for a 2 page context essay isn't so bad, and my text response score is good, two 9s :D Disappointed, but my mind is at ease now.
I'm a slow thinker and a slow writer, I can't do essays under time pressure. Give me time and I'll give you the best pieces of writing you've ever seen, but when I'm short on time, I just can't work as well.

FD, it's not only you, at least 14/20 is bearable, I got 10/20 for LA after pretty much hitting the nail on the head for my LA SAC and doing well in LAs throughout practice exams =.="

Btw, I'm suprised at context, I wrote a really short piece as well (in 35 mins ;D) and scored well in comparison to spending the 1hr 10min on LA :(

Istafa, on Spesh you scored 96, 39, 78 and I scored 100, 39.5, 74.5 and we got the same study score, don't you find that a little weird? haha! D: it's intrigued me now!! Samad got the same as me on Exam 1 and beat me by 4 marks and got a study score 1 higher than me, I guess either, SACs actually mean a lot, or there were A LOT of people who did VERY well in spesh this year :S

Anyways, touching on the other topic that's been on my mind, I dropped a mark on tha t graph too, although I don't know why either, ahh dammitt! but hmm, I guess SACs bailed me out of trouble in spesh as well :D (*relief*)

I'm finally satisfied to say, as well, that methods is a lot more lenient than spesh, dropping 2 marks on Exam 2 and ending up with a 49, I don't think that would happen in Spesh ;D

did you get 10's for context and text response, since you got a 5 in LA o:

No :P I got 9/10 for Text and 8.5/10 for Context, but I did well on SACs, 98/100 and 100/100, so I guess that helped me a lot, I got an A on the exam (45/60)

Quote
Specialist Maths:
GA1: School: 96/100 Final: 96/100
GA2: 39/40 (A+ cutoff was 38.5)
GA3: 78/80 (A+ cutoff was 71.5)

Wtf how is that not a 47-49... I'd hate to be someone that got a 48-49 Because there scores would probably be like
GA1: 99/100
GA2: 39/40
GA3: 79/80

Seems so unfair that the people that get 50s arent necessarily the best at the end of the day they were just the ones that didn't make any stupid mistakes or got lucky...

This is most subjects. Especially further.

I new that Further would be like that. But Spesh? I thought there would be more leniency...

Further isn't even that bad really. I think I lost 5-6 marks over both and still got 45.

That's still bad in comparison to some subjects. In some subjects, you can lose 5 marks or more, over both Exams and score a 50. e.g. samad lost 6 marks across both Chemistry Exams and received a 50.

It's weird this year.. Im sure i lost at least 6 marks (best case), but leaning towards 8 marks in further exam 2.
Ended up with 46 o.O

Psych you can lose quite a bit, particularly this year with such a low A+ cut off. In 2010, I lost 20.5 marks over both exams and got 44.

Figured out what migh have happened with MHS sacs and why no scaling: They scale internally so VCAA barely changes them (only a speculation)

cocked up the written examination in french, my oral saved me.

English waqs a bit weird. Throughout the whole year, id been relatively shit at context, and boning text responses and language analysis. The opposite happened in the exam. half a mark away from a 50 though is frustratingly close,

Lowest I've seen is 6.

So if in 2011, you had the #1 sac rank, and got 69/72 for both exams (and they were the best exam scores in your cohort) you would be guaranteed 50?
Within reason, yeah it COULD be, don't wanna make any outlandish statements though..
