http://www.celestialhealing.net/physicalveg3.htm. After having read this I thought, OMG I've been eating meat all my life and now I should stop. So we humans really are true vegetarians just like our great ape relatives the gorilla and orangutang. Chimpanzees are not true vegetarians as they also have some meat in their diet and I dunno about the bonobo.

yeah that website doesn't look biased at all

Or factually correct
-
Meat - eaters: have teeth
Herbivores: have teeth
therefore all meat eaters are herbivores
-
My ex-girlfriend was a vegetarian, she faints every so often if she doesn't eat meat. We need red meat in our diet. Its fact.
-
I've been a vegetarian for 17 years and I've never fainted from lack of meat...

This is just what shes told me, but she only weighs ~40 from when I last talked to her, I don't know, probably needs more research from my behalf.

Now that's what I call very graphic. I saw the whole thing.

Yeah I wouldn't mind eating pizza everyday

http://www.marksdailyapple.com/why-grains-are-unhealthy/#axzz1iY02kmMK Here's an inconvenient truth about grains.
-
first you source a hippy website, now you source a blog... dude
-
The number one issue I have with being a vegetarian which I don't plan on doing is that you'll risk having a serious lack of essential amino acids and here we go another article that says something similar about grains http://articles.elitefts.com/articles/nutrition/all-natural-unhealthy-whole-grains/
-
The number one issue I have about being a vegetarian is that I don't get to eat meat. Which is delicious.
-
Everyone in this topic: go read Peter Singer's "Practical Ethics".
-
That would require me to give Peter Singer money
-
Get all my protein from beans? Gtfo.
-
beans beans the magical fruit
-
this makes me hungry.. mmm
-
Does it really matter if supposedly "humans weren't meant to eat meat"? We weren't meant to do a lot of other things but we still do it right? Bias BS.

I have been a vegetarian for five years and i would never go back to eating meat :)
it's certainly not for any reason listed in that article though, sounds like a load of bs in my opinion
not all vegetarians are hippies who recycle their shower water to water their organic home grown vegetable patches
-
Need animal proteins for building muscles and general health well being.
-
Everyone in this topic: go read Peter Singer's "Practical Ethics".
... I think you know what I'm thinking EZ.
-
Meat-eaters: have claws
Herbivores: no claws
Humans: no claws
Great white sharks: no claws
THUS
How great white sharks are not physically created to eat meat
-

But the weapon the shark does have are those mighty jaws and I see what you mean lol ;)

Say what you want about Singer as a 'philosopher', but if people are going to go along with some sort of utilitarian moral thinking (as like 75% of the population does), they may as well understand the consequences. :p
-
Having not read either books, wouldn't Animal Liveration be more relevant?

Practical Ethics has a very detailed section on it too - tbh most of Singer's stuff is probably in the same sort of vein.
-
I've been a vegetarian for 17 years and I've never fainted from lack of meat...
it's different for everyone. i was a vego for a few months but started passing out frequently because apparently my body isn't able to absorb plant-based iron.
-
Why is everyone so educated ???
Because this is AN
-
I stopped eating beef coz that stuff makes me feel weird.

We've finished high school, that's all

Now I'm confused about what you're saying...?

Basically I think Singer doesn't really qualify as a philosopher, but he's a very good thinker when it comes to drawing out the implications of how most people conceive of 'ethics'. Mostly because I (and Aurelian) don't really consider practical ethics philosophy.

Nothing like eating a test boosting steak...
-
I don't think I'll give up eating meat but that article said some weird stuff like meat fermenting in digestive tract and pieces of meat being found in gut and remianed there for years. Sounds really bizarre.
-
i once saw a video that said wholegrains are bad because we haven't developed to process bread and cereal within this short period of time. Therefore the make you fat.
lolwut

Paging enwiabe to this thread for his rant on diet and nutrition

Yeah, I found an article about that. Which I've posted on this thread. Damn you, inconvenient truth.
-
i have also been a vegetarian, all my life, and proud of it ;D
-
I'm vego, yes.
And this will probably annoy everyone else posting on this thread, but I'm not really "pro-vego". it just annoys me a little when I'm eating with other vegetarians and also um.. omnivores :P and there is that vegetarian who mentions where the food has come from RIGHT THERE AT THE TABLE. Like honestly, people have a right to be vegetarian and i think it's GREAT if they are :) but they also have a right not to be veg and I think we should respect that. :) besides, we don't need to hear about headless chickens before we're about to eat.
-
I think I should become an ovo-lacto-vegetarian. Eating plenty of nuts and beans for protein. I'm not so sure about where to get the vitamin B12 though.

first thing that comes to mind is eggs and vegemite. also, there's this stuff called nutritional yeast and it's a good source of b which you can eat by sprinkling through stirfries/porridges etc. it's available in health food stores. good luck!

well the truth is quite inconvenient if it's a lie

Thanx for ur supportive feedback, it may take me a while but I'll get there I hope. This is to pursue a healthier longer life.

Well the thing that makes it convincing is that it seems quite plausible

see but if things can't be "processed" in the human body, they cannot be converted and are not stored as fat, because they cannot be converted to fat, they are typically dispelled as waste or clog up inside up until we die.
-
Well clogging up can't be too good can it?
-
A quick Wiki search informs me that Bonobos are frugivore (fruit eaters) that also occasionally snack on smaller apes, small vertebrates and, allegedly, one another now and then.
So, well, what does that say about us homo sapiens?
-
O.o

It says that H. sapiens should be similar
-
So we should snack on.... midgets?
-
I remember A vegeterian speaker came to my school, and that person looks skinny as heck.
Anyone notice that vegetarians are a little bit to thin?
Perhaps their are skinny because they don't ever eat animal fats.
-
I guess, by being a vegetarian, one cuts out a whole variety of food from their diet. And despite cafes etc. becoming more accomodating for those who follow such a diet, vegetarian options can be more expensive and less widely accessible/convenient as their meaty counterparts. Therefore people who are not fully aware of the repercussions of becoming vegetarian, and therefore do not compensate for any energy lost, can inadvertently lose weight.
-

When it says can't be "processed" it doesn't mean literally. Refined carbohydrates are relatively new foods that aren't part of our evolutionary diet and we don't deal with them as well as we could (ie they make you fat).
-
I think there was a TV show I watched once: :kill it, cook it, eat it" where the make meat eaters and a couple of vegetarians kill animals themsleves, cook it/them and then eat the animals.
It did turn me off meat for a while, but then one of the "i'm Sam kekovich, eat lamb' and the guy from Jurassic Park advertisments came on, and then I went to eat dinner.
maybe we should just eat more vegies and a bit less meat??

then there are also those who live off cheese sandwiches and increase their fat/carbohydrate (entails sugar) intake up to an unhealthy amount due to lack of nutritional knowledge, thus gaining tons of weight. it could go both ways, i suppose.

Of course! I by no means meant to suggest that by becoming vegetarian weight loss was inevitable, merely trying to explain why it MAY occur :)

Most of the meat I've been eating is egg and tuna
-
Theres quite clear evidence its not a health risk, quite to the contrary, it can offer a number of positive health benefits (wikipedia has a decent summary of some of the studies). I've been a vegetarian for around 11 years now and i run and lift weights, its never impacted upon me.
Your body is obviously adaptable, its not as rigid as people might think. If you're low in iron, your body increases the production of a protein that soaks up iron for example.
Theres obvious health benefits in eating less red meat, same with a vegetarian diet overall.
As for finding food, i usually have no problem at all. Pretty much every eating establishment in Australia usually has at least one vegetarian item. In other countries it might be a lot harder but here i've been fine.

Really? Wikipedia?
Anyways, I agree with you on every single level, Except the use of Wikipedia.
-
What's wrong with Wikipedia?

Really? Wikipedia?
Anyways, I agree with you on every single level, Except the use of Wikipedia.
Well, i've read a few of the studies but not everyone has access to journal databases or the ability to understand the articles fully without training. I think wikipedia is appropriate for a more general audience. Much more easy and accessible too but cheers.
-
You can edit the information? It all may not be fully correct? Some random can put random studies in pages, and then we'll all be confused.
-
Popular Wikipedia articles are reviewed and cross checked by moderators and they usually necessitate citing of good sources. I'd consider it far more accurate than the odd website floating around, which isn't a scientific publication
-
I agree on that point, however many schools and universities do not allow Wikipedia to be used as a form of reference
-
That's because they're trying to train students to reference properly. 90% of all scientific pages on wikipedia are just summaries of journal articles and/or textbooks on the topic and are entirely appropriate to use.
-
I agree on that point, however many schools and universities do not allow Wikipedia to be used as a form of reference
I understand that but i hope you do realise you're on a forum right :) ? I'm not going to spend a couple hours writing up a fully referenced paper when wikipedia provides a fine summary for the general audience here about the information i want to present.
I think on errors and bias, on the major articles on things you'd find in most encylopedias, wikipedia is on par, if not better with the media. Ever watched british or american news? Or God forbid..press tv?
If you haven't go watch them for a while and come back to wikipedia. You'll appreciate the difference.

Yes, I think if you tailor your diet to satisfy the requirements of protein etc. then there should be no need for fainting, you just need to be on top of the diet. However, it was meat that is full of densely-packed nutrients, that provided the catalyst for human evolution.

Lately, I've been a semi-pescatarian.

me too. becoming a vegan would be pretty much ideal, but i don't know how long that's going to take.
