i once saw a video that said wholegrains are bad because we haven't developed to process bread and cereal within this short period of time. Therefore the make you fat.

lolwut
Yeah, I found an article about that. Which I've posted on this thread. Damn you, inconvenient truth.

well the truth is quite inconvenient if it's a lie
Well the thing that makes it convincing is that it seems quite plausible

see but if things can't be "processed" in the human body, they cannot be converted and are not stored as fat, because they cannot be converted to fat, they are typically dispelled as waste or clog up inside up until we die.

A quick Wiki search informs me that Bonobos are frugivore (fruit eaters) that also occasionally snack on smaller apes, small vertebrates and, allegedly, one another now and then.

So, well, what does that say about us homo sapiens?

I remember A vegeterian speaker came to my school, and that person looks skinny as heck.

Anyone notice that vegetarians are a little bit to thin?

Perhaps their are skinny because they don't ever eat animal fats.

I guess, by being a vegetarian, one cuts out a whole variety of food from their diet. And despite cafes etc. becoming more accomodating for those who follow such a diet, vegetarian options can be more expensive and less widely accessible/convenient as their meaty counterparts. Therefore people who are not fully aware of the repercussions of becoming vegetarian, and therefore do not compensate for any energy lost, can inadvertently lose weight.

When it says can't be "processed" it doesn't mean literally. Refined carbohydrates are relatively new foods that aren't part of our evolutionary diet and we don't deal with them as well as we could (ie they make you fat).

I think there was a TV show I watched once: :kill it, cook it, eat it"  where the make meat eaters and a couple of vegetarians kill animals themsleves, cook it/them and then eat the animals.

It did turn me off meat for a while, but then one of the "i'm Sam kekovich, eat lamb' and the guy from Jurassic Park advertisments came on, and then I went to eat dinner.

maybe we should just eat more vegies and a bit less meat??

then there are also those who live off cheese sandwiches and increase their fat/carbohydrate (entails sugar) intake up to an unhealthy amount due to lack of nutritional knowledge, thus gaining tons of weight. it could go both ways, i suppose.

Of course! I by no means meant to suggest that by becoming vegetarian weight loss was inevitable, merely trying to explain why it MAY occur :)

Theres quite clear evidence its not a health risk, quite to the contrary, it can offer a number of positive health benefits (wikipedia has a decent summary of some of the studies). I've been a vegetarian for around 11 years now and i run and lift weights, its never impacted upon me.

Your body is obviously adaptable, its not as rigid as people might think. If you're low in iron, your body increases the production of a protein that soaks up iron for example.

Theres obvious health benefits in eating less red meat, same with a vegetarian diet overall.

As for finding food, i usually have no problem at all. Pretty much every eating establishment in Australia usually has at least one vegetarian item. In other countries it might be a lot harder but here i've been fine.
