From the VC
Colleagues, as you may know, first round offers to students through the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC) go out today and Melbourne has performed exceptionally, thanks to your efforts.
VTAC data shows first preference applications for Melbourne's degrees have jumped by 21 percent overall from last year, the largest increase in Victoria.
There has also been a 24 percent increase in applications through the Access Melbourne program for disadvantaged students, including large increases for those from rural areas and low socio-economic backgrounds.
The University has made 6183 first-round offers, which is 49 more than last year (see the table below for selection comparisons).
In addition, Melbourne has the most popular degrees offered by Victorian universities, as measured by first preference applications through VTAC.
The Arts and Science degrees are first and second respectively - totaling 4898 applications - and Melbourne has five of the 10 most sought degrees in the state.
We believe the demand reflects the growing awareness of our new programs and their attractiveness to students from all backgrounds.
It has also contributed to a rise in the Australian Tertiary Admission Ranking (ATAR) for all degrees, a 24 percent increase in interstate offers and 21 percent more Access Melbourne offers.
The new Chancellor's Scholars' Program for very high achieving students - offered for the first time this year - has proven extremely popular, with Melbourne making more than 90 offers to students with an ATAR of 99.9 or above.
Science has had the biggest increase in demand, making 80 more offers than last year and recording a 5-point rise in the ATAR (from 85.05 to 90.15).
This course, along with Biomedicine, has been particularly popular for Access Melbourne students from rural or low socio economic backgrounds.
Arts has also performed very well, increasing its ATAR and offering more than 1800 places.
Publishing guaranteed ATARs in advance for Access Melbourne categories has been well received by students and schools and has contributed to large numbers of offers for students in these categories.
Melbourne's attraction to international students has also continued to grow despite a significant national downturn, with the University making 40 more offers to that group through VTAC than last year.
As always, none of this would be possible without the unflagging efforts of all staff over the past year, but particularly the Office of Admissions and Chancellery.
You have helped make our curriculum deeply desirable for students from a wide range of backgrounds and improved our ability to build an international reputation as an education and research centre equal to the best in the world.

Obviously because many kids went into biomed instead of science. If you combined the two.. :)

These clearly ins are massive!!

I know right...I guess engineering had no intake this year so that may be part of the reason as well.

What the hell!!! Those are insane!

That's ridiculous!

Fark my plans to do B.Science in 2013 might have just been put in doubt... I felt 85.05 was an acheivable goal but now it's in the 90s... Here's hoping it drops for 2013 intake! :-\

chin up buddy, it's far from over. you still have one full year to do your best and 90 is very achievable.
also it's only this year where it has sky rocketed up so there's a very good chance that it drop back to 85~

You don't know that it is 'only this year', maybe the Melbourne Model is kicking in and it gets higher and higher D:
Fact is, study hard and you should hit 90+ Microshift!

I HATE MY LIFE.
After all the predictions that scores would drop this year.... noooo, Biomedicine shoots through the roof. God damn it, guys.

Actually, I just had a sudden thought, my school is on their list of "under represented schools" and I'm fairly certain I get youth allowance (I don't actually get it, it goes into an account that my mum takes care of), does that mean 78 would have been the requirement for me this year (financially disadvantaged)?

You can do biomedicine at Monash or science at Melbourne; both are suitable pathways to professional medical degrees.

im not saying the op is wrong... but on the UoM website
http://futurestudents.unimelb.edu.au/admissions/entry-requirements/undergraduate-domestic
suggest scores that are alot different than what is being said.
EDIT: o wait i see the minimum score is different to the clearly in... but thats weird...

@ Microshift. I think you should definitely consider repeating English this year or taking either Lit/EngLang instead because it will really help your ATAR if you can get a good English score. :)
Pain in the ass I know...but if you put in the effort you will reap the rewards!

I would have loved to do English Language if my school offered it, I was so pissed off when I found out they didn't.. it looked so good! But yeah I've thought it over and decided that I'm not going to repeat English, doing it once was bad enough. :P Rather than force myself through a subject that I thoroughly dislike I've decided I'm just going to put in extra effort in my remaining (enjoyable) subjects.
Given that I would only need an ATAR of 78 for the course I really want (obviously getting in on my own merit would be nice though) and since my school is eligible for RMIT SNAP too (CompSci @ RMIT being my next preference) I would only need an SS of 25 in Methods to get in there, so I feel the pain of going through English again is not worth it.

Take it from me; someone who's done English twice.
Doing it the second time around, I improved a fair bit and I reckon that made the difference of me being able to do what I wanted to this year.
I'd like to point out, I hate English with a passion. I hated it the first time. I hated it the second time. But doing it twice was worth it.
Given that I would only need an ATAR of 78
That was the case this year for people who were eligible for Access Melbourne. I wouldn't count on it being the same in coming years (things could change).
since my school is eligible for RMIT SNAP too (CompSci @ RMIT being my next preference) I would only need an SS of 25 in Methods to get in there, so I feel the pain of going through English again is not worth it.
Being given a provisional SNAP placement isn't a certainty.
VCE isn't meant to be a cake walk. It's not meant to be easy. Put in the hard yards now and you won't regret it later.

MicroShift: Just a thought, I saw you got a 44 in further maths. Now you may say that, that means nothing, but getting above 40 (in year 11 aswell) is pushing you in the right direction. Just study hard this year and you should get above 90.

The main problem is probably his english, since it has to be in his top 4.

Not to sound arrogant and dismissive of advice, but I spent a good week leading up to results release and a short while after thinking this over and going through scenarios in my head. Using relatively conservative estimates I came up with the following:
English: 29 > 26.8
Specialist Maths: 35 > 47
Maths Methods: 40 > 44
Physics: 30 > 32
Further Maths: 44 > 4.28
Biology: 31 > 3.12
ATAR: 89.05
And again, that's being conservative, I feel I could potentially get a bit higher in Physics (perhaps Accounting, which isn't shown, but I don't know since I've never been exposed to it before (never did 1+2)) and maybe even Specialist/Methods if I really push myself. And if I do well if the CompSci extensions tudy @ RMIT that might push my aggregate up a point of two (by replacing Biology), further increasing my ATAR.
Sorry if that came out as arrogant at all, I just figured it would be better to push myself in subjects I really enjoy (Methods/Spesh) than force myself begrudgingly through another year of English.
Though as I mentioned earlier I really would have loved to do English Language, it's a real pity my school doesn't run it. :(
-
It can be hard to get those scores in Specialist Mathematics and Methods.
-
I may be deluding myself in thinking I can get those scores, but it's better to aim high. I'm hoping my mostly 100%'s in Y11 Methods are indicative of something. :P
