Honestly just hoping to pass (which is ~60 for the exam - med is weird) haha :P

If I get ~65 for both my exam and OSCE (oral/practical thingo) I'll be pleased to meet my goal of Credit average for the year :)

yeah lol for maths units i normally get them towards the end of the next semester to go to award functions and stuff

comm units - much less formal, sometimes just an email from the chief examiner lol or sometimes just a word-of-mouth from my supervisors

Not looking forward to thermodynamics and heat transfer considering my shit internal marks and leaving a few parts of the exam blank.

Our results should be out on the 17th Dec, but there are people with 90+ average (less than 10 out of ~320).

Most have very little life outside of their textbooks though.

Hahah, well, as bad as this sounds, it's pretty true, Med requires a lot of hard work and dedication to do well in, it's not like Maths where your intelligence, problem solving skills and sharp thinking will get you the marks. In Med, it's all about theory, theory, theory, theory, theory and ummm...more theory and then errrr....even more theory!

So it's possible to get in the 90s, I don't think anyone would be in the HIGH 90s though, it'd be more like just scraping in the 90s (unless pi knows someone in the high 90s?)

Moderator action: removed real name, sorry for the inconvenience

Wow they must really go hardcore. Does your grades limit what you can specialise in? Maybe those students are the future surgeons.

Post by: thushan on December 02, 2012, 07:44:10 pm
They're either international or pure genius (hey pi, SR, JC, DW?). To get into surgery...it's not so much med school grades as the amount of research, the connections you have, your work as a junior doctor, etc etc.

Nah, internationals. Having said "less that 10", that could just be 1 :P

(said "less that 10" in case there are more xD)

Not really. I really do wish more med students didn't care about grades so much, it really makes more a less positive atmosphere :/

Personally, I didn't join med to get the highest mark. Joined the degree to be the best doctor and person I can be, and that is "more than just marks" imo :)

I thought your marks determined whether you'd get into the specialisation of your choice?

So to be a neurosurgeon takes a lot of time.

I agree that med simply isn't about grades. Creating a positive environment is vital for recovery.

There are more important things than first year marks in that regard. Research is a major one.

No doubt though, marks in 4th year are important (feeling sorry for shinny here haha), you are correct there. It will help with getting an internship of your choice.

But in terms of specializing, the MBBS grades become less and less important (especially pre-clinical years).

This is just ridiculous.

AFC2000:
Missed 24 hours of lectures (e.g. all of them), attended 1 out of 12 tutorials, studied for a total of 3 hours the night before the exam:
Mark = 83 HD

AFC3140:
Missed 24 hours of lectures (e.g. all of them), attended 4 out of 12 tutorials, studied for a total of 8 hours the day before the exam:
Mark = 79 D

P.S. TT, why so awesome?!

^ i have come to learn that uni marks in no way relate to study or understanding of course material whatsoever.

I managed to hd a law subject i quite literally attempted to withdraw from 2 days before the exam because I was certain I would fail (had not been to a single lecture, not read anything, not been to any tutes). When they told me I missed withdraw date, I decided to read a friend's notes from last year (this was the ONLY time I did ANYTHING on the course). I went into the exam not even knowing about 25% of the course and didn't finish. I have no idea how I managed to HD this....

Then for the subject I enjoyed possibly more than any other subject in my degree and wrote something like 3 script books for gives me my lowest ever mark (including lower than people who didn't even know the facts of the case the exam was about).

Either they mixed my marks up for these two subjects or there is absolutely no sense to uni marks.

Two years into my degree, and I could graph an inverse relationship between time spent studying and my final marks.

The harder I try, the worse my marks get. Explain that.

Haha cheers man. Yeah, bit unfortunate that I couldn't get an extra mark or two to turn those high D's into HD's but I'm cool with that. After all, I've had my fair share of units where I barely managed to scrape a D, so it all balances out.

There are more important things than first year marks in that regard. Research is a major one.

No doubt though, marks in 4th year are important (feeling sorry for shinny here haha), you are correct there. It will help with getting an internship of your choice.

And yeh, it's really just for internship. They'll stop caring by the time you get to specialising really...
