i was wondering if doing really bad in one subject in your first year will have a great impact on your gpa, taking into account you doing really well in your other subjects?
-
First year altogether only accounts for about 10-20% of your total GPA over the 3 years of your course (if you're doing biomed, which I think you are... ??? ). 1 subject won't lower it a lot (especially in 1st year), it's more 2nd and 3rd year that can significantly affect your GPA.
-
Your gpa is mathematically worked out with each subject having an equal weightage on your overall gpa (provided the subject is worth equal amount of credit points as the rest - there are some subjects like studio design (architecture) that are worth double credits an therefore have twice the effect on your gpa than a normal subject).
Melbourne does not offiially use the GPA system but you can still use the GEMSEA equivelant to work out your GPA.
H1 = 7
H2A = 6.5 (this might be incorrect as I've not been on the website recently)
H2B = 6 (ditto)
H3 = 5
P = 4
Now just add up your total GPA scores and divide it by the number of subjects to get your GPA average.

thanks for the answer and ye im doing biomed lol, good guess. You have put my mind at ease. This new subject maths for biomed is slowly killing me on the inside lol as it is many others. Still going to try my best but it looks bleak for most of us. Thanks

Ahh could not agree more. Makes me wish we just did Calculus 1 instead of this useless probability. The idea of an assignment each week doesn't help either...

I could swear there was a sticky around here about this topic ;)

GPA for PostGraduate Medicine Explained
-
But wait I have a q so:
I've been thinking about this and this essentially means that Semester 2 of my Arts degree counts towards my GPA right?
Just...don't.
-
just a follow up question, if first year is only worth around 10-20% of our gpa, since we do 8 subjects in the first year, 1 subject like maths for biomed contribute like 1.5- 2.5%??
-
Does that mean I should choose relatively easier breadth subjects in later years rather than in first year?

Yep.
-
How badly will our GPA be affected if we do poorly in our first year?
-
GPA is not officially used at Melbourne Uni. If you are interested in how it is calculated for medicine, see the thread Russ has posted (along with *many* others asking about GPA).
-
Year 3 is given 3x weighting, year 2 2x weighting and year 1 1x weighting. Each year is a 8 subsequent subject block. Therefore, each first year subject affects your GPA by 1/48 (~2%).
-
so by 8% ?

wait so first year counts do 16% of your GPA?

Did you read the GPA thread that was mentioned above?
