i was wondering if doing really bad in one subject in your first year will have a great impact on your gpa, taking into account you doing really well in your other subjects?

First year altogether only accounts for about 10-20% of your total GPA over the 3 years of your course (if you're doing biomed, which I think you are... ). 1 subject won't lower it a lot (especially in 1st year), it's more 2nd and 3rd year that can significantly affect your GPA.

Your gpa is mathematically worked out with each subject having an equal weightage on your overall gpa (provided the subject is worth equal amount of credit points as the rest - there are some subjects like studio design (architecture) that are worth double credits an therefore have twice the effect on your gpa than a normal subject).

Melbourne does not offiially use the GPA system but you can still use the GEMSEA equivelant to work out your GPA.

H1 = 7
H2A = 6.5 (this might be incorrect as I've not been on the website recently)
H2B = 6 (ditto)
H3 = 5
P = 4

Now just  add up your total GPA scores and divide it by the number of subjects to get your GPA average.

thanks for the answer and ye im doing biomed lol, good guess. You have put my mind at ease. This new subject maths for biomed is slowly killing me on the inside lol as it is many others. Still going to try my best but it looks bleak for most of us. Thanks

Ahh could not agree more. Makes me wish we just did Calculus 1 instead of this useless probability. The idea of an assignment each week doesn't help either...

Year 3 is given 3x weighting, year 2 2x weighting and year 1 1x weighting. Each year is a 8 subsequent subject block. Therefore, each first year subject affects your GPA by 1/48 (~2%).
