Title: past biomed students pls help :)
Post by: caution on January 30, 2015, 12:28:32 pm
Heyy I have some questions for past biomed students: whats the difference between practical 1 and 2 for experimental design and data analysis?
are the written assignments and computer tests done in tutorials/practicals?
Does prac 1 have to go before prac 2?

Also in general, are the online tests in tutorial?

Prac 1 is just a normal tute where you go through questions.
Prac 2 is in a computer lab and you just learn how to use some statistics programs. There is a computer lab test in that is done in class at the end of semester.

Written assignments and computer tests (weekly multiple choice) are done at home.
Prac 1 and 2 are streamed so that one goes before the other.

Hope that helped.

thank you VCEANON

1) does that mean i have to do prac 1 before prac 2?

2) and also for chem for biomed are the 30 min online tests at home or during tutorial classes?
3) are there assessments that are done during practicals/workshop for chem for biomed/biomolecules and cells?
thank you so so so much! :)

1) Yes

2) At home

3) For Chem you need to hand in a lab report at the end of the 3 hours but you can write most of it at home before you come to class and just leave gaps for results that you can fill in as you go. But there is usually sufficient time to do it all in class and you can leave early. For Biology, there is a short assessment in the prac that is worth 5 out of 10 marks allocated to the particular prac. These aren't too hard to get and are usually a multiple choice test that it done in the last 10 minutes, or drawing a diagram of what you see through a microscope, or demonstrating a practical skill you learnt (such as pipetting).

You can get more comprehensive info looking at the subject reviews

thank you :)

1) Do you think its wise to have a chem tutorial right after another tutorial?
2) Does the start 5 min later and finish 5 min earlier still apply?
3) Are we allowed to stay back after tutorials to ask questions? or do we have to book an appointment with the teacher or something?

1) Yes, 2 hours of class back to back shouldn't be a problem.

2)Yes, it applies to most (if not all) your classes including tutes.

3) Yes you are allowed to stay back and ask questions. The tutor will usually hang around for a while to answer questions.

If not, you can always book an appointment with the tutor or lectuerer.

I know for chem they also have extra learning classes where you can pop in and have your questions answered (usually during lunch time).

Thank you ~

I'm reading the reviews and it says that for chem and biomolecules, these two subjects, the three hr practicals are not every week (eg. theres only 6 for chem and im pretty sure one sem has more than 6 weeks) is that true?

thank you everyone. i'm so sorry im asking so much but uni is a new experience and i wanna get all my info right go in more confident :)

P.S has anyone had to walk from the law building tot eh chem building? did you make it on time or did u have to sprint? I don't really wanna walk into chem tutorial looking like I need an oxygen pump :/

Yes correct, the practicals are not every week.

For biology, practicals are every fortnight (1st one isn't assessed though, it's just an introductory prac, well for us it was).

For Chemistry, practicals are distrusted throughout the semester, there's no fixed pattern. You'll be assigned a group number and your timetable will be posted on the LMS.

And lastly, yes it is possible to walk from the law building to the chem building for back-to-back classes. You won't have to sprint, just walk faster than normal that's all.

1) So for the chem prac I don't get to choose the 9 - 12 morning slot on tuesday?
2) Are the chem practicals pretty frequent? Cause i only have a 1 hr lectrue on tuesday, wasn't sure if i should schedule my chem tute on the same too? if i do, thats 9 till 4 of chem, hope that doesn't get too draining... but if the pracs aren't that frequent 12 to 4 for chem doesn't seem that bad :)

3) Can I change my tutorial times every week then?

4) the three hr workshop for biomolecules comprises of 1 hr tute and 2 hr practical right? so i still have to go every week assuming i want to attend every tute class? that means that a 9 to 12 workshop without the practical requires me to go to the tute thats usually at the first hr (9 to 10)?

thank you ~

1) No no, you choose your time slot for the chem pracs but you won't have them every week, you get a timetable that details which weeks they are in.

So if you choose Tuesday 9-12 you will be doing your pracs on Tuesday 9-12, which week you do them varies.

You still have to register the Tuesday 9-12 prac.

2) You have 6 in a semester and a semester is 12 weeks long...

3) Afaik you can only change your tutorial time to another if the other tutorial is not yet full.

I don't see the need to change your tutorial time every week though. Just pick one that fits best.

4) Yes, that is correct.

how long does it take for the online version of the lectures to be uploaded?

how long does it take for the online version of the lectures to be uploaded?

The lecture slides or the lecture recordings?

Lecture slides are usually uploaded on the LMS a day or two before the lecture (maybe more depending on the lecturer).

The lecturer recordings usually take a few hours to be uploaded on to the LMS.

for the chem, the handbook says '1 x three hour lab/workshop per week' does that mean that this year it is definite every week i'll have to do a prac, unlike last yr where u had to do only 6?

thank you for answering all my questions :) very much appreciated

Hmmm...that's an interesting one. I'm not 100% sure about that one, sorry. You might want to contact the subject co-ordinator about that.

I highly doubt you'll have a prac every week, that makes 12 pracs for the semester, that would be pretty stressful stuff, even for physics you only have 8 pracs.

Nevertheless, we have been told that they are making a few changes to the labs this year.

Best to check with the subject co-ordinator or ask your Student Centre.

thank you for the advice :)

1) i read somewhere that if I need extra assistance in chem there are sessions held at 1 - 2 daily? where?

2) and also do they have something similar for other subjects like biomolecules and cells/experimental design and data analysis?

3) chem pracs dont operate like the biomolcules prac where they start off with a tute first so i have to come to that time slot every week, right?

1) Yep, at the Chemistry Learning Centre. First floor of the chemistry building. When you enter the building (main entrance) turn right and you'll see it.

2)Yes they do, for Biology and Data Analysis tutors will have consultation times. Just pop into their office at those times for 1 on 1 help. (A timetable of these times should be posted on the LMS or they will be given to you when semester starts).

3) For chem, you will be doing a prac for the whole 3 hours, no tute.
For bio first you have a tute (1 hour, every week) than a prac (2 hours, every 2 weeks).

In the Handbook for MAST10016 (Mathematics for Biomed) the "Core Requirements" box is empty.

Do lectures for biomed core subjects take attendance? For example, there is one lecture that was preprogrammed into my timetable and is at 5:00PM on a Friday (two other classes early in the morning) and I'm thinking of just doing the lectopia. Is that okay?

All lectures in Biomed are recorded so attendance is never recorded. The only things you ever need to go in for are practicals and tutorials.

Cheers Shenz0r, thought as much.

I wonder what the least amount of time is that someone has invested into biomed and passed...

Should be surprisingly low actually, you would have to slack off big time (I mean, big time) to actually fail a subject at uni.

Unless your definition of pass = getting H1 of course.

A lot of my friends have failed subjects at Melbourne/Monash. Two of them got the "at risk" status, one of them took a leave of absence voluntarily, and another got kicked out for not showing any signs of improvement.

But the thing that all of these people had in common is that they skipped a lot of classes (in most cases, their attendance was below 50%) and didn't hand in a lot of work.

As long as you attend all the classes and do all the assessed work, you will almost always pass.

EDIT: Most of these people were Science students, not Biomed students.

Yup, always keep a mind on when assessments are and make sure you listen to all lectures - if you don't attend some, always try to catch the recording ASAP, get it done and dusted so you don't fall behind. Do this and I guarantee you will pass with flying colours.

If you had to take a guess at the average amount of hours biomed/science students dedicate to private study, what would it be?

First year I definitely put the most time to because I experimented with different study techniques (ended up finding a lot of inefficiencies which I got rid of in 2nd year, saving more time).

Hmm, so for Bio I would take like 2-3 hours to summarise each lecture (sometimes longer because it took a fuckload of time to decipher my handwriting and rewatch the lecture for things I missed), then I'd do the necessary exercise questions for Physics, Maths and Stats, Chemistry I sorta crammed from what I remember. I don't really remember how much time I invested per week because I've always concentrated on knocking off my "to-do-list" of work.

I think most weekdays I stayed in the biomed library from like 12-6pm and then did a little bit more study when I got home. In SWOTVAC there was a day where I studied continuously from 8AM-2AM. Which is NOT NECESSARY AT ALL, this was very excessive and I was pretty insane to think it was.

In second year I got it down to maybe 2-4 hours (excluding lectures) per day which was quite manageable.
