Heyy I have some questions for past biomed students: whats the difference between practical 1 and 2 for experimental design and data analysis?
are the written assignments and computer tests done in tutorials/practicals?
Does prac 1 have to go before prac 2?

Also in general, are the online tests in tutorial?

Prac 1 is just a normal tute where you go through questions.
Prac 2 is in a computer lab and you just learn how to use some statistics programs. There is a computer lab test in that is done in class at the end of semester.

Written assignments and computer tests (weekly multiple choice) are done at home.
Prac 1 and 2 are streamed so that one goes before the other.

1) Yes

2) At home

3) For Chem you need to hand in a lab report at the end of the 3 hours but you can write most of it at home before you come to class and just leave gaps for results that you can fill in as you go. But there is usually sufficient time to do it all in class and you can leave early. For Biology, there is a short assessment in the prac that is worth 5 out of 10 marks allocated to the particular prac. These aren't too hard to get and are usually a multiple choice test that it done in the last 10 minutes, or drawing a diagram of what you see through a microscope, or demonstrating a practical skill you learnt (such as pipetting).

1) Yes, 2 hours of class back to back shouldn't be a problem.

2)Yes, it applies to most (if not all) your classes including tutes.

3) Yes you are allowed to stay back and ask questions. The tutor will usually hang around for a while to answer questions.

If not, you can always book an appointment with the tutor or lectuerer.

I know for chem they also have extra learning classes where you can pop in and have your questions answered (usually during lunch time).

I'm reading the reviews and it says that for chem and biomolecules, these two subjects, the three hr practicals are not every week (eg. theres only 6 for chem and im pretty sure one sem has more than 6 weeks) is that true?

P.S has anyone had to walk from the law building tot eh chem building? did you make it on time or did u have to sprint? I don't really wanna walk into chem tutorial looking like I need an oxygen pump :/

Yes correct, the practicals are not every week.

For biology, practicals are every fortnight (1st one isn't assessed though, it's just an introductory prac, well for us it was).

For Chemistry, practicals are distrusted throughout the semester, there's no fixed pattern. You'll be assigned a group number and your timetable will be posted on the LMS.

And lastly, yes it is possible to walk from the law building to the chem building for back-to-back classes. You won't have to sprint, just walk faster than normal that's all.

Cause i only have a 1 hr lectrue on tuesday, wasn't sure if i should schedule my chem tute on the same too? if i do, thats 9 till 4 of chem, hope that doesn't get too draining... but if the pracs aren't that frequent 12 to 4 for chem doesn't seem that bad

1) No no, you choose your time slot for the chem pracs but you won't have them every week, you get a timetable that details which weeks they are in.

So if you choose Tuesday 9-12 you will be doing your pracs on Tuesday 9-12, which week you do them varies.

You still have to register the Tuesday 9-12 prac.

2) You have 6 in a semester and a semester is 12 weeks long...

3) Afaik you can only change your tutorial time to another if the other tutorial is not yet full.

I don't see the need to change your tutorial time every week though. Just pick one that fits best.

The lecture slides or the lecture recordings?

Lecture slides are usually uploaded on the LMS a day or two before the lecture (maybe more depending on the lecturer).

The lecturer recordings usually take a few hours to be uploaded on to the LMS.

for the chem, the handbook says '1 x three hour lab/workshop per week' does that mean that this year it is definite every week i'll have to do a prac, unlike last yr where u had to do only 6?

Hmmm...that's an interesting one. I'm not 100% sure about that one, sorry. You might want to contact the subject co-ordinator about that.

I highly doubt you'll have a prac every week, that makes 12 pracs for the semester, that would be pretty stressful stuff, even for physics you only have 8 pracs.

Nevertheless, we have been told that they are making a few changes to the labs this year.

Best to check with the subject co-ordinator or ask your Student Centre.

3) chem pracs dont operate like the biomolcules prac where they start off with a tute first so i have to come to that time slot every week, right?
