Following on from this thread last year, I thought it might be a good idea to do the same this year. I don't know about the rest of you, but I thought that having people list out their subjects was actually quite helpful as a reference as it allowed me to look out for their comments about those subjects around the forum and gain their opinions on doing them.
So, this is what I'm intending on doing this year:
Semester 1
- BIOM20001 Molecular and Cellular Biomedicine
- GENE20001 Principles of Genetics
- UNIB20007 Genetics, Health and Society
Semester 2
- BIOM20002 Human Structure and Function
- MIIM20002 Microbes, Infections and Responses *
- UNIB30004 Sex, Science and the Community *
* Subject to change:
If something else other than microbiology and immunology takes my fancy in BIOM20001, I'll try to replace UNIB30004 with a related selective subject. If I don't like microbiology and immunology in BIOM20001, I'll most likely replace MIIM20002 with PHRM20001 Pharmacology: How Drugs Work. If I like microbiology and immunology but I'm not completely sold on it, I'll most likely replace UNIB30004 with PHRM20001 just to keep my options as open as possible.
Enough about me, what are you intending to do? :D

Semester One:
CHEM30016, Reactivity and Mechanism
CHEM30015, Advanced Practical Chemistry
PHYC20009, Thermal and Classical Physics
PHYC20010, Quantum Mechanics and Special Relativity
MAST20009, Vector Calculus
Semester Two: (if exchange application completely fails)
CHEM30014, Specialised Topics in Chemistry B
MAST20030, Differential Equations
PHYC20011, Electromagnetism and Optics
CHEM30012, Analytical and Environmental Chemistry
Not sure on a fifth subject to do, but probably MAST30021, Complex Analysis
-
Semester 1 (last semester woo!):
ECOL30007 Marine Ecosystems: Ecology and Management
GEOM30009 Imaging the Environment
GEOG30019 Sustainable Developments
Marine's the last of my zoology core subjects (thank goodness), and the other 2 are just filler subjects. My options for other level 3 science subjects are rather limited because I don't have the pre-reqs down, plus really don't want to do anymore zoology subjects (because you know, I've had enough).
-
Semester one:

PHRM30008 Drugs: From Discovery to Market
Semester two:
BCMB30001 Protein Structure and Function
BCMB30010 Advanced Techniques in Molecular Science
BIOM30001 Frontiers in Biomedicine

Ooh, I did Sex Science last semester. It's was okay, there were some parts that were very Artsy and some very sciency parts (they call it breadth for a reason right?). Can be very dry (pun not intended), but really easy to do well in and you get Geoff Shaw as a lecturer which is a win.

If I end up going on exchange, I won't be overloading sem 2. But sem 1, I'm definitely doing 5 subjects. I mean, I got out of last sem with a 89 average, including rote-learn heavy subjects biochem and bio, so surely I'll do better this sem without them.
-
Noooo, don't bail on MIIM!
I think I'll like immunology - if I'm put off it will most likely be due to microbiology.
-
It's taught very well. It's still ultimately dry memory stuff like the rest of undergrad, but it's generally not thaaaat bad.

You probably already know this, but just in case you don't. Engineering Computation and Foundation of Algorithms are taught by the same lecturer, and according to him they have massive overlaps. They're not restricted against each other but might as well be, the lecturer strongly discourages taking both. He also said that Electrical Engineering paths will accept Foundations of Algorithms + Design of Algorithms to satisfy the prerequisite of Engineering Computation, but Mechanical Engineering will not, though I can't find any info on this anywhere.

Ah my bad, looks like Alistair Moffat teaches the two subjects during different semesters. I'd still recommend you shoot him an email about this though, if the subjects turn out to be mostly the same it could make the semester pretty slow.
-
Thanks to all those who messaged me questions about the subjects I took this semester. Since it proved to be useful, I thought it'd be worth updating you on my plans for semester 2:
Semester 2
- BIOM20002 Human Structure and Function
- MIIM20002 Microbes, Infections and Responses
- UNIB30004 Sex, Science and the Community
- GENE20002 Genes and Genomes
I hope your semester has been good and wishing you the best of luck for the next one!

I was an exchange student, so I had two semesters to do some interesting subjects that are not available in my home uni. My four subjects last semester were BIOL10005 - Genetics & The Evolution of Life, PHRM20001 - Pharmacology: How Drugs Work, EVSC30005 - Fire in the Australian Landscape and CEDB30004 - Stem Cells in Development & Regeneration.
Semester 1

Doing BA atm, looking to transfer to Commerce at the end of the year.
I'd definitely like to do an Economics major regardless, and a second major in either finance or marketing. I've done Micro and Finance 1 in Semester 1. Definitley doing Macroeconomics, but should I do quantitative methods 1 for breadth or principles of marketing? I would prefer to do marketing but I was orignally going to do QM1 because it's more relevant to economics.
If I were to transfer to BCom, would I have to have done QM1, or can my other subjects be credited? Is it a prereq for entry into year 2 commerce (Micro,Macro and QM are compulsory) or is it just compulsory for first year BCom students? Because its not a prerequisite for any specific subject apart from year 2 QM2. Would I be allowed entry into BCom if I haven't done QM1? And how can I do marketing if I have to do QM1 over Principles of Marketing?

I'm doing the bold ones and that's it for me! :)
You're brave, heart.
-
I'll be doing:
- Virology
- Med and Applied Immuno
- Frontiers in Biomed
Looking forward to a lighter load after experiencing the perils of overloading in 3rd year.
-
I have my most relaxed semester ever - a nice change after the absolute nightmare that was this semester (even after compulsively unenrolling from my fifth subject after having a panic attack in the MST) and the ZOOL30006 final "exam".
I'm taking:
MUSI30143 - Shakuhachi Ensemble 1 (bamboo flutes!)
CEDB30003 - Developmental Biology
BIOL30001 - Reproductive Physiology (I've heard this one is difficult and requires a lot of work, but I'll certainly have the time)
Excited to get this disappointment of a major done and dusted and get onto botany (that's right, people who like plants exist).

Jesus Christ. Accel Maths 2 is no slouch of a subject either. I sincerely hope you know what you're getting into.

As far as I'm aware, it's not needed for the majority of subjects so you probably don't have to do it in first year. Keep in mind though, if you are going to do an economics major, then I'm pretty sure you have to complete a third year econometrics subject as well, which means you will need three semesters to spread out QM1/QM2/Basic Econometrics or QM1/Intro Econometrics/Econometrics. I can't seem to find any info confirming whether or not you need a 3rd year metrics subject which is a bit strange, but they seem to be included in the sample course plans nonetheless. Maybe check that out with the student centre :)
Must be nice for all of you getting to choose your subjects! Mine are all compulsory. Then again, I think it would be too painful to decide so this is probably best for me haha, I have
ACTL30003 Contingencies (double subject)
ACTL30004 Actuarial Statistics
ACTL30005 Models for Insurance and Finance
Going to be fun as! :P

Three subjects per semester! Underloading for the win :D. I'm looking forward to only doing two coursework subjects next semester, should be nice and cruisy ... no wait I have a thesis to write :/

Haha it'll make a nice change from two and a half semesters of overloading for me
Good luck with your thesis - I can't even imagine how awfully pedantic a maths thesis must be :'(

^ End of semester exam was good for repro. MST was reasonably fair. The literature review and feedback quizzes are a bitch.

Cheers man. It's not so bad, I'm doing applied stats - estimating platypus populations around the greater Melbourne area - and working with an ecologist, so at least I feel like there's a point to what I'm doing.

Semester 2
BCMB30001 Protein Structure and Function
BCMB30010 Advanced Techniques in Molecular Science
BIOM30001 Frontiers in Biomedicine
PHRM30009 Drugs in Biomedical Experiments
MAST10009 Accelerated Mathematics 2 (if allowed through maths diploma)
M8. That's a bad fucking idea. I overloaded with advanced techniques, proteins, and a Barry subject last year. Wouldnotreccomend/10
