MEET UP 2015/2016
Waaaaddddddduuuuuuppppppp!
The belated ATAR Notes meet up is HERE! It's always an awesome day, and I promise you'll put some faces to names and probably even make a few close friends. Everyone's always super nice, and I personally guarantee that because it's an ATAR Notes meet up - you won't be the most awkward one there! Hooray!
I would love for as many people as possible to make it down, eat some food, enjoy some drinks and ice-cream and generally have a great time. AN Meet Ups are always the best part of the year ;)
Date: Saturday the 16th of January, 1pm.
Where: Flagstaff Gardens. Super easy to get to, just catch the train to Flagstaff, exit onto William St/LaTrobe St, look around for the gigantic swath of green and collection of awkward looking high-school and uni students, then go there.
Who: The most ballin' nerds this side of the equator. All ages/year levels welcome (except probably Year 7. That's a bit far... nah you can come if you're in Year 7... I think...) - even if you're in like your 12th year of uni and you're already 50. S'all good. We're an inclusive tribe. That also means you can brings friends, even if they're not on AN!
Activities: Should be an epic four square tournament. If anyone has Cards Against Humanity, bring it along. If anyone wants to bring a frisbee/soccer ball, that's also cool. Might pump up the ol' synthetic Sherrin and bring it along. I hear Phy124 can kick a 75m drop punt and hit you square in the chest before giving a second effort and receiving it back. Participation in activities is absolutely not required. Normally there's a group playing games and a few other groups that end up chatting together - something for everyone!
Food: We'll buy food but everyone should bring some food to chip in anyway. I'll buy the standard slabs of soft-drinks, bags of ice and whatever else, but people always bring really random Korean sweets and shit like that. So feel free to bake, bring random things - but you're under no obligation to, as we'll provide everyone with food and drink. Once again, I will lug a fucking giant esky with no proper handle with me on the way there and back.

Last year there were a couple of kids who went from casually standing around to running and jumping around me in a tribal manner when they realised who I was. I was actually kinda scared. .__.

For those worried that it'll be awkward or scary, i think everyone feels like that. Especially the admins and moderators, we're damaged, damaged people, which is why we've stuck around so long. It's probably really likely everyone is just as worried as you and yet, year after year when i go (been like 5 or 6), *everyone* has a blast. Really, don't worry.
IF you're scared to go alone, i volunteer to tell you sloth facts and bring you there (from the station or something, nothing suss). I'm sure there'll be plenty of other offers like this too.
It'd also be really great if a few people could bring things to do. When conversation dies down, it's good to have something to talk over or interact with. I've never played Jenga so it'd be really sweet if someone had something like that.
Not really in the admin team where all this prep work i assume has gone down but i'm happy to come down early to help set up, buy food, etc

Easily the most awkward moment I've had at a meet up. He's a nice guy though.
With me it'll be the other way round. You guys think I'm nice? Just wait till you meet me irl. You will come out a sadder and wiser person.
I promise to try and make each of you feel as awkward as I possibly can.

What time will it end: You can leave whenever you want, it's a very informal affair. Different meet ups go for different amount of times. Usually after about 3 hours everyone all at the same time says "fuck this I'm out!" and it just sort of... stops. But some people stay or head into the city and others leave much earlier. Again, very informal affair :)What if someone decides, not to leave :P

Nah I'm just kidding. In all seriousness, if anyone's a bit nervous, please feel free to inbox me. I can come and meet you outside of the group if you don't want to talk up to everyone alone or anything like that. I seriously promise you that everyone is really welcoming and in the same boat as you. It's true that it's a bit weird to meet people from the Internet, but it's only weird for two seconds.
In reality, you're meeting super likeminded people and people that are way similar to you. You know during lunch when everyone segregates into group and you have your few friends? That's kinda what a meet up is like except you're with 30 of your friends, because at the end of the day it takes a particular type of person to hang around on a community like ATAR Notes. It's always lots of fun and you'll always come away with new friends. It's great practise for uni, and an awesome opportunity to meet famous people like pi!
Let me know if there's anything I can do to make the experience easier for you if you're fearful, but otherwise, I really encourage you to come down!

Least to say, EZ was a revelation (his fam is quite a phenomenon too), there hasn't been anyone quite like him on AN since...
With less than 24 hours to go, undecided people (me being one of them) need some last-minute convincing :P. Perks of meeting studious, nerdy soon-to-be year 10, 11, 12s or recent grads? Pls tell me.
I have a theory (mostly from personal experience) that people who come of as slightly cold people on the internet are actually really lovely, funny and genuine in real life. While some people are way nicer than they actually are, on the internet. (generally, not always)

I literally decided to come like 20 minutes ago, it wasn't even in my mind for last couple of weeks. A chat with another AN member suddenly made me rethink it.
Not sure if this holds true for you, but I'm personally going just to practice socializing better/develop myself (not that I'm one of those mopey serial killer-esque types :P) in preparation of uni next year and as a general life skill (it's definitely not easy to befriend complete strangers for most people I wager).
And if I make a couple of friends along the way then even better! You never know when getting yourself out there and networking will be beneficial to both yourself and other people. You might even meet your potential soul mate... ok too far... :P
Good things happen to people who take opportunities :)

Not sure what I can say to convince you haha, but personally I just think it's interesting to meet people. I've made a few really good friends from these meets and then there's a bunch of other people I see around Monash who I recognise and stop and chat to, it's good to just /know/ people.

haha thanks. Yeah, I have a strong tendency to stick with my friends and friends' mates, not really the type to go all out there (unless if at school, conferences or co-curricular stuff). My main fears were the pretentiousness of people ( I was surprised by how genuine and funny EZ was when I first met him in real life haha) and the fact that I'm in a sticky situation (not comfortable talking about it on this thread).
But yeah, I'll probably come (at least go the place itself, if I back out, I'll just take the escape route to the library or the shops I work at lol). If anyone is on the Belgrave/Lilydale line, hit me up!

the pretentiousness of peopleI suppose I haven't met most people IRL, but I semi-semi-know quite a few of you. Just like I wouldn't call you personally pretentious from the little I've seen of you, A&B (not that I've met you in person), I would say the same with most of the others. Sure, some people are dicks about their scores, but they're the exception rather than the rule and we're all out to squelch them. This really is a forum full of amazing and often very humble and very genuine people - get into a sticky place, and you'll see that. You meet anyone you don't like, and you can back out of the conversation and hit up one of the more awesome dudes.

There are some people who act as though SS and Atars are the end and be all, brag a lot, don’t really have a life apart from study and try hard to be overly funny when in real life that are not like that, that’s pretentious (no offence pls). Take into account that I do have reasonable tolerance levels as my parents and school placed a high emphasis on academic results and I've grew up in Macau (a Chinese SAR). Maybe I also have high expectations of humankind, because some of my friends who got perfect Atars (amongst Olympiad short-lists) are some of the most modest, genuine and funny people I've met.

If you're going to publicly berate people, at least be fully honest and say who you're talking about. How do you know the way people act on here is different to how they act in real life? You've judged them without actually meeting them. I've seldom, if ever, seen people brag on here and how do you know what people do in their lives, let alone know all they do is study? If you're going to publicly berate people, at least be fully honest and say who you're talking about. How do you know the way people act on here is different to how they act in real life? You've judged them without actually meeting them. I've seldom, if ever, seen people brag on here and how do you know what people do in their lives, let alone know all they do is study? appleandbee wasn't complaining about people saying the got high ATARs. They were making allegations that all people did was study and they weren't genuine people. This is an academic forum, of course academic results matter, it's entered around academia so naturally those best at studying would be the most respected and valued members, but that doesnt detract from other members. I've talked to many people who have gotten <90 on here and they've enjoyed using the forums in my experience, and found it a useful resource.
I wasn't debating the importance of academic ability on here, I just thought appleandbee's presumptions were inappropriate.
Anyway, I don't want to make this a debate about the forums, this is for the meetup.

I think we have a lot of variety on this forum; some take studying and marks super seriously, some less so; some love to tell others their marks, some don't; some like to answer more questions, some like to ask more questions; some like to worship those with highs scores, others don't; etc. This makes the community diverse, and I think that makes it not unlike any other school. I don't think it's up to any one of us to judge why someone weighs one factor more heavily than someone else, we don't know why they're here, we don't know what's happening at home, we don't know what's happened in their lives (inb4 you don't know my story memes), we don't even know if they're telling the truth sometimes. And that's to be expected - we are all posting relatively anonymously on the internet :P
I can't speak for everyone, but personally I don't really care what someone's scores are, as long as they're happy and doing what they love. I'd rather have a forum of people largely content with their lives, than have a bunch of stressed out and depressed high achievers. And that's just what I think it important, I'm sure each of us has different thoughts on what is most important for this community, that's that cool too :)
To turn back to the meetup, I've attended three over my years here. I didn't go to the one in 2011 (my graduating year) because for many reasons stated here ("bunch of nerds talking about ATARs and study scores and flashcards and physics and <some other topic I wasn't interested in talking about because I'm Indian and talk about these things at home 24/7>") and I think I was being too judgmental and was pretty off the mark because when I went to later meets (as a "mod"), the scene was pretty different. Sure, those "nerdy" topics come up, and it's honestly a decent ice-breaker to ask something like "so what are our plans for next year?", but the conversation naturally flows from there.
Having said that, doubt I can stay for long tomorrow, but I'll hopefully duck in at some point! :)

Will there be some sort of sign so we know where the meet up is at the gardens? I've never been to flagstaff gardens so don't know how big it is.
Usually it's somewhere close to the station, look for a group of teenagers and young adults haha. Unfortunately I don't think there will be signs.

Mainly chatting, broke into a couple of groups: some of the oldies chatting about random stuff, and some of the recent grads (and babushka) talking about Clix among other things hahaha. Brenden was kinda in the middle (physically and also in age LOL) and talking to everyone haha.
