Title: English 2010
Post by: Aqualim on November 16, 2009, 07:27:03 pm
For those of you who are participating enduring English in 2010, what books/films/plays are you studying? and how well do you think you'll perform?

Our cohort is reading 'Year of Wonders' and is watching 'Look Both Ways' for our reading and responding area of study, as well as reading 'The Crucible' & 'The Rugmaker of Mazar-E-Sharif' for our context pieces.

Personally I think it's an interesting selection of books, since I have never heard of them before, due to the fact the english thread has been bombarded with 'A man for all seasons', and 'The Kite Runner'.

I'm hoping to achieve a 40, maybe high 30.

I'm not quite sure all of what we're doing, but we're doing A Streetcar Named Desire too! Think we're also studying Hard Times...

As for my study score aim? It's ridiculously, ridiculously high, so I'm not going to write it here. Yet. I'm not quite ready to set myself up for failure.

I'm really looking forward to English though. I love exploring themes through language, and I adore delving into the deep semantics of texts, so it should be fun. :)

A Man For All Seasons
Look Both Ways
Catcher In The Rye
Witness

I think. It would help if the school gave us our book lists already. Anyway, I'm pretty stoked for A Man For All Seasons and not so much Catcher In The Rye and I don't know much/anything about the films. I'm aiming for 40+ but would be pleased with 35+ because despite English being my one of my stronger subjects I have no confidence in it. Bahhh.

Title: Re: English 2010
Post by: m@tty on November 17, 2009, 05:41:20 pm
No it isn't, it was fourth last year. [taken from assessment report]

The most popular texts and their mean scores, out of a possible 10, were as follows.

Text                             |% of students | Average mark
Look Both Ways              |26.0%           |5.7
The Kite Runner              |13.8%           |5.4
Nineteen Eighty-Four       |9.5%             |6.2
A Man for All Seasons      |8.3%             |6.3
In the Lake of the Woods |6.9%             |5.9

Oh so it was the highest performing one

The report also says:
The highest mean scores were achieved by students who wrote on Hard Times, King Richard III, Selected Poems, (Slessor) and Collected Stories (Farmer).

But I'd imagine AMFAS would be up there. It was the highest performing one out of the 5 most popular ones.

I wonder how Cosi is going to go. We're doing it too :).
Done Cosi this year, it was pretty short, easy and entertaining. Although it did make my teacher admit she is a communist and that she believes all males in our class will someday cheat...

I'm jealous to an extent of every other context in that they get to do some of my favourite texts (The Crucible, Catcher in the Rye).  On the other hand, "Whose Reality?" has the most interesting context topic of them all...

You have opened up a can of worms here my friend! LOL, Identity and Belonging FTW

I have discovered SO MUCH about human minds and about myself! In the texts I have been able to make strong connections etc, to who I am and how I connect to the world! As well as comparing the context with people around me !!!

LOL, nah. IMO i think all the contexts are designed like this, to really enage you, and allow you to be philosophical

Only one thats crap is the Imaginative Landscape, WTF is that? LOL, sounds like you talk about fantasy o.O
Title: Re: English 2010
Post by: Nic K on November 29, 2009, 03:47:46 pm
At my school, we get to choose what context we want to do between identity and belonging, whose reality and encountering conflict. It's good that way!! I am doing identity and belonging.

I reckon the imaginative landscape would be interesting!!! I probably would've chosen that if my school offered it.
Title: Re: English 2010
Post by: xXNovaxX on November 29, 2009, 03:52:21 pm
What?!

How on earth does that work? The reason schools choose one is so it can be like COLLECTIVE learning, and that we all say ideas related to the ONE theme.

Also, because of financial/resource constraints....it's easier to but a stack load of stuff about one context, than heaps on several.

That's really weird =S

But i suppose it has its merits
Title: Re: English 2010

My school is the biggest VCE provider in Victoria, so they have enough teachers to teach the three contexts.

And it's always worked well in the class, with students being interested in the context they study.

Plus I don't believe in the collective learning as a fantastic tool anyway. It only helps when revising with friends really in my opinion and I suppose I'm lucky in that most of my friends are doing identity and belonging haha.

I don't think finance is a big deal. I'm not sure but clearly they must manage fine. I mean, they'd still probably buy the same amount of resources for each context as other schools because of its size.

I know that identity and belonging is most popular, followed by whose reality and encountering conflict being about the same in terms of numbers.

It doest say, since the website where u check every schools performance (a thread I amde 2 days ago) shows NUMBER OF PEOPLE DOING A 3/4......this could include year 10's and even year 11's, but year 12's = roughly year 11's, so divide by half LOL, for a general idea
Title: Re: English 2010
Post by: Nic K on November 30, 2009, 08:40:03 pm
Bendigo Senior only has year 11 and year 12 students. Our secondary schools go to year 10 and then we all go to that school (other than those going to a private or catholic school).

We have 1800 people doing VCE in years 11 and 12. And I don't know how many staff members there are but there are a lot. Hahaha.
Title: Re: English 2010

Yes but I like how it works. It means the school can also run the most subjects out of any school in Victoria and 98% of students get ALL of their first preference subject selection.
Title: Re: English 2010
Post by: xXNovaxX on November 30, 2009, 08:57:17 pm
Yeah it's great like that.

I think its unfortunate how many students cannot do what they like in VCE because of "minimum numbers"
Title: Re: English 2010
Post by: samuch on November 30, 2009, 09:05:56 pm
my school isnt the greatest but they have only had 1 or 2 girl in the schools history that didnt get to do 1 sub in year 12 cos of numbers... so that proves that you dont need to have a large amount of people in the year level (we only have 180) for everyone to get the preferences they want (this may be also due to the fact that they would run classes for 4 or 5 students)

It's also about schools not OFFERING subjects

Lotrs of schools dont offer geography, politics, hebrew, Latin etc, not NECESSARILY because of numbers, but also because a shortage of teachers in that field who TEACH.

But I guess with English in 2010 we don't need to worry about it not being run *subtly attempts to push back on topic*

You know what all this fuss is about.....

FUNDING.....and ensuring teachers are WORKING/ so they are not employed for no reason.

Like,  maybe the GOVERNMENT defines a class as "x" and many schools want u to do "x" subjects at school so as to be able to retain a teacher to teach it/ get funding for you as a full time student AT SCHOOl.

....Just a guess
