hi guys,
when do you start writing essays?
:D :D :D :D
-
i want to know this too !
-
asap :P
-
no, like what chapter do we start and what sort of topics.

no, like what chapter do we start and what sort of topics.
u can write an essay on any topic/chaper in the el course, in fact most of the sacs (if not all) r essays
but common topics include the notion of standard australian english, language variation according to use/user, attitudes to different varieties, language change, standidisation/codification of language etc
the list is endless so just write essays after each chapter/area of study, and if you have done units 1/2 you should already be able to write a few basic ones
-
For unit 3 I have 4 SACs. First up we have a short answer then the other 3 are essays. The first essay is scheduled for week 8. Its all up to your school.

I looked at unit 4 sacs. There are 4 short answer sacs and no essays. Weird. We basically have 2 Sacs for each outcome. I dont know if its good or bad. Each SAC is worth 6.25% which means if I go badly on one it doesnt mean THAT much but if I go really well - again, it doesnt really count for much.
-
dw, all your sac marks can change depending on your exam mark, ie my sac grade changed by about 2 letter grades
as for which is better to do (essay vs short answer) its very important you are exposed to both in sacs and i would do some essays outside of class and have your teacher mark it if possible (since your sacs are very short answer based)
-
The teachers know what theyre doing, ill probably have to write a billion essays anyway.

Ive been writing essays all summer, and going across them by my tutor.
You can already write on many topics if you havnt finished the course as yet....
Like, Globalisation, Language Change, Prestige etc. etc.
All you have to make sure is too find good essay Questions.
( I asked my tutor, and teacher for them at end of school last year.)

how were you revising? just learning the 1/2 relevant chapters or going through the 3/4 books?
-
going through 3/4 books such as living lingo and heinemann. right now its quite confusing but will certainly get a tutor very soon.

Thanks man!
Look, I think we (those who study EL), should help eachother this year.
My teacher at school isn't that great either, and this is the reality that
a lot EL teachers, suck!
Albeit, if we all can combine through the forum, we'll get our desired
results!!
-
^ yeah sounds good. perhaps we can help each other later in the year when we know the course and such :) i am jealous of you who was already started, im seeing a tutor right before school starts to go through some 1/2 relevant content!
goodluck this year.

Im upbeating our group because, I remember that last year, for upto 3 - 4 weeks at a time,
there was no talk on the forum.
Its ridiculous.
If we talk, communicate and share eachothers thoughts and ideas, we can generate confidence
amongst ourselves, aswell as improve.

In terms of essay writing, I don't think you really need to churn through plenty of essays in the holidays. It's probably better to find some original examples and try and analyse things linguistically - that's what usually separates the good essays from the bad. If you don't feel like writing whole essays, try writing individual paragraphs or practise integrating a quote into a section.
-
Yea . The problem I had was to include a heap of info in a structured form. Through practise this can only be fixed, and soo I did. However yes, I take your points on board
