I don't want to crush you, but I think UoM doesn't have a normal second round. You need SEAS otherwise it's impossible =[
EDIT: But this year seems retarded.

i didn't realise the melbourne model's graduate 'guaranteed' scheme would affect it so much.
science clearly in is 89.00, and biomed being so high, that new med 'MD' course is gonna be a bitch to get into - very prestigious!

I think because the Melbourne model did better than expected for us, the ENTER was pushed up a heap. That is crazy for biomedicine ~98, if you get like an extra ENTER point and do well with the UMAT, you can do the real deal at monash.

97.90 for Biomed?? That's insane!!
I don't know what I got into yet because I think I forgot to tick the box which lets them publish my name in the newspaper :( (that or I've made some horrible mistake filling out my VTAC forms/applications!)

Unless you double-check everything and go through it with someone to ensure perfection.. But someone could hack into the system or you can accidently do/click something in the final draft - eeeek. hmm i guess you right.

Geee Biomedicine and Science went up at Melbourne heaps!
Could this be due to the new guaranteed SEAS for rural students or just influx?
-
Wow, I think I'm good friends with 5+ MBBS students now! :P
-
Geee Biomedicine and Science went up at Melbourne heaps!
Could this be due to the new guaranteed SEAS for rural students or just influx?
due to the melbourne model & their graduate entry scheme, since particuarly biomed & science went up, it could suggest their up&coming (in 2011) prestigious degree "Doctor of Medicine" is going to be very popular indeed.
-
Gosh. I think VTAC servers have been off for nearly an hour now. Or is it just me?

No one answered my query from a few pages ago.
I thought you could apply for Melbourne graduate courses without having to do your undergraduate at Melbourne. Am I misinformed?
-
No. You can only do a graduate course with an undergraduate degree.
-
Commerce/Aerospace Engineering F/T, P/T (Monash University - Clayton)
:)
-
comm/law monash!
-
No. You can only do a graduate course with an undergraduate degree.
^ yes but if you don't do it at melb and got 99+ you aren't guaranteed entry and it's much more competitive, rather if you stay at unimelb you have that 'guaranteed scheme'.

Yeah but there are still downsides to the guaranteed entry pathway.
For instance, I want to do the JD after I finish Media Com but I'm still going to go through the mainstream application process despite guaranteed entry because even if I defer payment I am not entirely sure that I will be able to afford a full fee paying place - which is all you're guaranteed with a 99+ ENTER.
I'd rather take a shot at the CSP as well.
-
No. You can only do a graduate course with an undergraduate degree.
I know, but you don't have to do it at Melb to do their graduate courses, right?
For example, lets say I do biomed at Monash, I could still apply for MD at Melbourne once I'm done.

yeah this is true.
but if your aiming for 99.90 and want to go grad med (not full-fee), definitely melb is the way to go.
the MD is going to be probably the most prestigious med school - that being the most difficult to get into.
so if your really keen: definitely having an advantage like the 'no gamsat' is very helpful

Personally, if I wanted to do med I would do the Science scholarship at Monash and finish it in 2 years.
I'm not really interested in med though, so I was just throwing this out there for the people that are.

i spoke to melbourne uni, they told me that it needs to be a minimum degree of 3 years. it sucksss, i considered monash's science scholar program too :(

...Right? But my friend got an ENTER of 90, and it was her second preference and she got her third preference.
I don't understand how this could work.
Are you sure 84.7 wasn't fringe? Because I seem to recall it not telling anybody what the clearly in was in the paper.
I remember a '-' in the column?

There are a couple of posters on the Whirlpool forum saying they got 90+ and didn't get into Melb engineering. One even claims he didn't get in with 94.25

I got Commerce/Law at Deakin Geelong! :)
Enter went up by 5 points from 85.3 to 90.10. When i went to the change of preference day they said it would only go up by one or two points.
Also quick question I have a friend who got a 95.65 and didn't get into her first preference: professional communications at RMIT, is there much chance she'll get into it in the other rounds?

85 would be the clearly-in for the previous year and at most it should be used as an indicator, not as a guarantee that the score will get you into the course.

Yeah, an indicator, but if I needed a 95, then why even bother having it?

I wonder why uom didn't state the clearly-in for engineering?
-
I got an offer from commerce at melbourne. I didn't have any doubts about getting in but after seeing biomed go to (~98) I really shouldnt have been so cocky. I'm so excited now :D.
Question: Is there anyway to get enrollment packages online?
-
Congratulations to everyone! I wish you all the best of luck at Uni.
For those who missed out on their dream course, I'm really sorry, but stick to your guns, and I'm sure you will reach your goal in the future. :)

http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1361174&p=14
That's pretty insane considering last years ENTER.
I'm another one who didn't get in. I got science though :S It's silly that they say the clearly in is going to be 85, yet thats a whole 10 points off. Why would they even say that if they have no clue? lol
85 would be the clearly-in for the previous year and at most it should be used as an indicator, not as a guarantee that the score will get you into the course.
Yeah, an indicator, but if I needed a 95, then why even bother having it?
It's just a statistic provided by the university, how you use it is up to you.

First preference! :)

I was fairly confident about it, but after hearing people with 95 ENTER didn't get in, now I'm just relieved!
I'm pretty curious what the Clearly-in was though... to see how close I actually was to not making it.
Maybe they haven't published it because students no longer need it as an indicater.
Anyway congrats all :)
-
Holy shit, just read about the melb engineering debacle. Thats insane.

MBBS at Monash, unbonded CSP place :D
Soooo happy and relieved - for a while I thought I might have to decide whether or not to move to Adelaide, but so glad it didn't come to that.
-
hey guys how do u find what the clear in(fringe enter) was for courses???
if possible could someone link it please???
thnk you sooo much

Well engineering has it's last year this year, which probably explains this. So is the B.Eng clearly in ~95?

Hahaha, I'm the 94.25 from WP and during the year was thinking "dw about school, I can get 85 with minimal effort" and "I don't need to fill out SEAS because i'll get well over 85 regardless (under repped school)". At first viewing of the paper i assumed it a mistake, looked on the VTAC website at the relatively low fringe (84.7) and proceeded not to worry and thought that i could call up today and get it all sorted. (I was eligible for all of middle-band). Today when i called up UoM the operator told me there was no hope of getting in 2nd and nobody that i could talk to in order to have my SEAS considered or to plead my case (otherwise helpful, made good recommendations etc.). I don't think a little thing like paperwork should stand between me and a university place. I'm just angry @ the international students who get in on 85 (guaranteed).
Is there someone with more of a say in the Melbourne decision making process that i can contact and try to sway?
Now to the realistic side of things I'm left with a difficult choice, I can:
-Accept my offer to Swinburne Civil Engineering (do not want) and hope for a second round Melbourne offer (unlikely)
-Make an irregular offer application for Monash Engineering (Perhaps engineering/science? -does anybody know more about?)
-Make an irregular offer application to RMIT Civil (Far easier to get to than monash, saves maybe 30minutes travel a day, they have a good engineering reputation, Negative:non general first year - no idea if civil is the discipline that i am after)
-Adopt the Melbourne model and make an irregular offer application to Melbourne Science and later proceed to get a masters in engineering (Less engineering overall, but more rounded knowledge base)
The main problem lies within that if an irregular offer gets accepted i forfeit my right to any further offers (2nd round) and that i am also only allowed to submit one.
Advice?
Edit: Also looked in the vtac guide and last year second round melbourne engineering had a higher clearly in than first round? (How can this be?)

First off, my condolences to you as UoM have been dogs with the clearly-in ENTER.
Dude, if you wanted to do engineering then Monash should have been like second (or first) on your list. I don't know eng at UoM past first year, but I can tell you that first year blows. What you should have done if you wanted to do eng at UoM is put B.Eng first and B.Sc second, since first year for either degree is the same and then you could have transfered to B.Eng in second year. Trust me the faculty is cool with people going from B.Sc to B.Eng to leave the Melbourne model or people from B.Eng transfering to B.Sc to get into the model.
Anyway you still got a great ENTER (actually the ENTER I was aiming for).
I wouldn't decline your offer (you are still doing civil engineering), but perhaps trying for that irregular offer to monash (aswell) would be a good idea.

I wouldn't be angry at Melbourne for the higher clearly-ins, it's clearly due to the guaranteed entry scheme for poor people. If the government didn't create a scheme as idiotic as "let's pay unis to take in poor people rather than making the education system more equitable" then the clearly-ins probably wouldn't have moved so much.
agreed, the quotas uom have for poor or rural applicats is just a bit too generous, i think 20% of places is ment to be set aside for these applicants
im not saying the access scheme is bad, imo the idea of it is great, having quotas this high isnt very fair tho

I've called up, just need to self study some units and I can jump to some year 2-3 pure maths stuff which was like the shit I was doing before I had stop and look over year 1 boring maths.

Yeah they said I can finish maths minor in ~ 1 year, which is good coz I get to focus on commerce which is something I have no idea about :S

Nah it's pretty easy but just boring. The stuff I was doing before made me spend days thinking and dreaming in my sleep about it. The stuff now is just like VCE stuff but just a bit extended...

did they supply the materials to you? or did you have to find it yourself/ask past math students?

just check up units on website, asked zzdfa/enwiabe/Mao, downloaded ebook from gigapedia.org, printed off at officeworks.
xD

printed a ebook off officeworks?
how much did it cost? and how many pages?
:D
-
hmmm I printed about 3k pages last time 7 books, for about 140$ that is so worth it...
Then the other day I printed about 2k pages for uni books and cost about 130$ coz i forgot to say i wanted it double sided LOL

that's actually quite good. however you could have done it all at home if you had a printer for cheaper! but effort & it wouldnt have been double sided.. how long did officeworks take to do those 7 books o_o

Hmm I remember giving it to them at 1 pm and they got back to me at 4 or somewhere around that, pretty good I reckon.

yeah it's definitely worth it. I remember checking up the prices for the 7 books, if I had bought them it would have costed like 400-500$.

what kind of binders did they use? the metal stringy ones or the plastic ones?
I would imagine its quite hard to bind a big pile of paper the size of a unibook :P
-
They use the plastic ones, I pick the black ones.
Yeah it's actually not that big if you have it double sided. So on the time that I forgot to tell em I wanted double sided they had to split a 1k page book into 3 seperate books with 3 massive binders LOL :(

I presume they are B/W? Wouldn't be too bad since they are maths books :P

Yeah they are b/w, you have to pay more for colour but hey it's maths XD

Wow...nice :D
Which books did you download + print off? I might get some uni headstart too :P

mm before boring uni stuff I was doing:
Complex A-Z, Art and craft of problem solving, principles of mathematical analysis and maths olympiad treasures.
Now i'm just reading stewart's calculus (year 1 calculus stuff) and linear algebra done right (year 1 linear algebra)
-
axler is meant to be a second course in linear algebra
-
kamil said to me it's year 1 at uom, but in monash it is listed as year 2, so yeah
-
Hahaha, I'm the 94.25 from WP and during the year was thinking "dw about school, I can get 85 with minimal effort" and "I don't need to fill out SEAS because i'll get well over 85 regardless (under repped school)"
Man that sucks, I'd be pretty pissed if I missed out. Although some people here have suggested thatthe huge hike in ENTER is because of people getting easier access from SEAS ("poor" or rural status). This isn't true, those Access Schemes did not apply to people applying for Engineering at Melbourne.
The reason why the ENTER went up so much is because they've offered half as many places to year 12 students as last year (while offering more to non-year 12 students).
Also AFAIK all Uni courses are required to offer 20% of places to SEAS applicants (generally they're not as transparent as UoM was this year though).
Now to the realistic side of things I'm left with a difficult choice, I can:
Unless you're 100% sure you're happy with Swinburne (which you don't seem to be), apply for an irregular offer. I'm pretty sure that you can accept the Swin offer and only forfeit it if you get accepted for an irregular offer (double check this on the VTAC website).
Sorry to say but I'm pretty sure UoM don't offer second round to non-SEAS applicants.
As for what course you should submit an irregular offer for, it kinda depends on how far you have to travel/how much you're willing to travel.
If you don't have to travel too far, then I recommend applying for Monash. If not then Civil Eng at RMIT.
(btw I'm not a fan of the Melbourne Model graduate pathways, so this advice might be a little biased).
Best of luck mate.

damn .. don't say that... it scares me .. ::)

Well, my predictions for 2010:
Biomedicine 98.50
La Trobe Dent 99.50
Biomed could go up to 98.50 - 99.00, but if it went past 99, then you would be stupid not to the MBBS at Monash (if you had the UMAT score for it).

yeah but there's not a huge number of people who 99+ and high enough umat- and the interview is most important anyway. besides theres much, much less places in MBBS at monash then biomed melbourne.
i agree that if you do get an offer, it's stupid not to accept it if you are really keen on med and fully set on doing it, rather with uncertainty its better to go through grad.
it'd be doubtful that biomed would go up anymore because entry into 2010 and 2011 are exactly the same.
so biomed will probably not get much higher than 98.
-
Yeah but a good ENTER and a good UMAT doesn't = MBBS offer
yep. getting 99.95 and 100%ile in umat is worth nothing if you can't talk even look in the interviewer's eyes.
(with that said, getting these scores is incredible/amazing/unimaginable and you'd probably get an offer if you had satisfactory communication skills :\ )
-
MBBS at Monash :D
(csp unbonded, 96 umat, 99.8)
-
^rhjc - that's actually incredible, i'm so overly jealous................. :o
yeah i understand that high scorers can also do well in interviews, i was just making a point.

I'm not sure if this is true but someone told me that this is the last year of undergraduate intake for medicine students at Monash university. After that it changes to post graduate. Therefore, biomed could go even higher at Melb uni.

That can't be true ... I have heard that they are adopting a new interview style next year. Why would they do that if they are not going to use interviews for undergraduate medicine selection?
-
^^ yea i also heard something about next year being the last year for undergrad med at monash. if so biomed should hit 99.

that's so silly guys.
there's no way med undergrad at monash will close, especially since the undergrad melb was closed, now monash hogs the best.
the only different thing is the new interview style as rhyc said and its now MMI (same as grad med at melb)
-
lol i got no idea, a relative in her 4th year doing mbbs heard about it.

hope it doesnt :P imagine how bad it would to get 99 and only be able to do biomed lol
well biomed is ~98, so getting 99 there's only a few high degrees possible, plus there's scholarships availabe for 99+ and melbourne guaranteed entry for graduates. besides, getting 99 doesn't guarantee you at all for med, most people who get 99 can't get into med.. (for many obvious reasons)...
-
Biomed at Melbourne here (:
At Monash's open day this year they mentioned a new interview format as was brought up. I don't think they can remove their undergrad program for awhile though, the current grad program has so many fewer places. Unless they offered it at Clayton. No objections to that!
-
biomed/law @ monash for me :) bit too far though :S anybody know if/how i can transfer to melbourne law after 2 or 3 years?

UoM law is post-grad so I guess you could transfer to a New Generation degree and then do law.

yep. getting 99.95 and 100%ile in umat is worth nothing if you can't talk even look in the interviewer's eyes.
(with that said, getting these scores is incredible/amazing/unimaginable and you'd probably get an offer if you had satisfactory communication skills :\ )
A friend of mine (KL):
2008:
- Biology 50
2009:
- English 50
- Chemistry 50
- Physics 50
- Maths Methods 50
- Specialist Maths 46
In the end:
99.95
Also, he scored 100-percentile in the UMAT (a high 100-percentile by his overall score)
And he was accepted to Monash MBBS CSP Unbonded course.
So yeah, people who are smart actually do well on the interviews as well -- so keep that in mind too.
He is amazing - should be an inspiration for any VCE students out there he did the incredible/amazing/unimaginable thing you were talking about.
pfft, what a joke of a scoresheet, jks. Mr. KL is a good friend of mine and the dux of my school, amazinggggg guy in academia, but is also very socially capable. When I was in his class during 2008, I had no doubt that he would 100 UMAT and 99.95 the ENTER, but also ace the interview. He always had the talent, but I guess a little bit of hard work got him these unbelievable scores. However, at my uni info day, I met 3 other people who achieved exactly the same scores, so I guess he now has competition; nonetheless, he is amazing.
