Title: 2010 Chem midyear - what did you think?
Post by: 10weid on June 09, 2010, 01:49:08 pm
how did we all go?

too easy i reckon, didnt probe deep enough into alot of the areas it could have..
few small things, but otherwise seemed very good, solid exam, A+ mark will be relatively high..

what do we all think?

A+ cut off marks will most likely be high.....

silly mistakes are going to hurt

lol at the people in my class who choose AAS for the uranium question, the obvious answer was mass spectrometry as they were both isotopes.

how easy was all the interpreting of the NMR and infrared data and all the enzyme stuff

55 degrees optimum and 5ph

and also the question on identifying the functional groups on w.e the molecule was
amide,amino,ester :D

I thought that enzyme question was a trick question....

i think A+ will be 90% +
A will be .. 80-90%
B+ 75-80
B 70-80

C+ ( average) about 65%

Way too easy. My silly mistakes will make me get an high A now... they should've made it a hard exam.

Yeah, I just saw the other thread.

15 was the insulin question - I stupidly failed to take into account that there were 2 separate chains.

Tell me about it. Questions were ultra easy... oh  but I have managed to make SO MANY MISTAKES.
Hoping to at least get an A :S

Looks like I got 17/20 for the multi-choice.

Shouldn't be too disappointed with that, but two of my mistakes were due to not reading the question properly.

I'm going to jump in and say I didn't think it was a super easy exam. By any means, I thought the multiple choice this year was more difficult than in previous years, and some of the questions involved original thought. I don't think the A+ cut off will be as high as people are predicting because lots of people would've dropped quite a few on the multiple choice...

Mmm 3(mass of chlorine in insectiside sample), 5(total volume of gas produced), 15 (insulin), and 18(oxalic acid) were the only really tricky multiple choices ones
Title: Re: 2010 Chem midyear - what did you think?
Post by: Blakhitman on June 09, 2010, 11:36:33 pm
freaking got 5 wrong cause I'm a retard and 4 cause I couldn't be stuffed thinking too hard.

but yea lol MC was quite straight forward.

ey Kyzoo what you do for the concordant titres?
Title: Re: 2010 Chem midyear - what did you think?
Post by: azn_dj on June 09, 2010, 11:40:35 pm
Im really surprised that in the multi choice, they called it an amino
ESPECIALLY since they kicked a stink last year about it being an AMINE.
Make up your F****ING minds, VCAA!

Post by: kyzoo on June 09, 2010, 11:46:11 pm
ey Kyzoo what you do for the concordant titres?

Mm I was taught that concordant titres are meant to be 0.1mL within each other, so that each titre taken into account is no more than a drop (0.05mL) away from the true titre required.
Title: Re: 2010 Chem midyear - what did you think?
Post by: Blakhitman on June 09, 2010, 11:49:37 pm
So you used 21.97, 21.99 and 22.03.

hmm ok well at least I got 3.82% xD
Title: Re: 2010 Chem midyear - what did you think?
Post by: Akirus on June 09, 2010, 11:51:15 pm
I used 3 not because of +/-0.05mL, but because I recall that you're meant to use 3 concordant titres.
Title: Re: 2010 Chem midyear - what did you think?
Post by: Blakhitman on June 09, 2010, 11:52:29 pm
lol I was going to, but then I saw that they weren't "concordant (according to my definition)" so I didn't.

same with me. I though 3 concordant titres so took the three closest to each other titires for my average.

i think A+ will be 90% +
A will be .. 80-90%
B+ 75-80
B 70-80

C+ ( average) about 65%
A+ is never above 90% no matter how easy the exam is, for science subjects anyway.

2009 Physics Unit 3 A+ cut off - 96%.
2009 Physics Unit 4 A+ cut off - 95%.

Seeing that the A+ cut off for Physics in last few years have been 90%+, I'm predicting this year will be just below 90%

They should make methods a prerequisite again, reintroduce calculus, add some DEPTH to the course (I want to facepalm every time I do an 'electromagnetism' question, only I can't, as my hand is used to twirl around my textbook whilst my mind remains unoccupied) and make the exams an actual test of knowledge.

I agree with this 100%
all the stupid stuff about counting squares under a graph, using some bullcrap righthand slap rules etc etc just kills physics.

single letter with 2 blanks, for each subject that you have a mid year for.

WRT physics, is the maths really dumbed down for everyone to be capable or is it the expected stuff just not used much in exams?
I certainly know that looking at a few physics questions in the MTH1055 course freaks me out a little.

we had that last year as well, but you spend the whole day worrying anyway (although there are people who didn't know that results were out until they were told to go get their results)
