Title: Anyone have any tips? (For VCE, 2011)
Post by: darren94 on November 10, 2010, 03:46:08 pm
I'm in year 11 and recently, I bombed big time on my only 3/4 exam (Stupid AusHistory). I'm anticipating anywhere between 30-35, despite my perfect A+ SAC average. I'm still recovering from my aftershock... Kinda depressed. :(
Anyway.. What I really wanted was some advice, for year 12. I plan to make up for my epic failure in doing so well in VCE, but I have my doubts. My subjects are: Eng,Further,Methods,Psych and Visual communication & Design. As crazy as it seems.. my goal for psych/ Further / Visual comm is 50. I know, I dream big.. my failure motivates me. (Is that a good thing) ? :) As for Methods and English; it could fluctuate depending on my adaptation skills..
Most of you people here do amazingly well, as I've noticed!
So does anybody have any tips on how to achieve that 50 in further / psych / visual communication?
Did you guys revise EVERY DAY? Did you start preparing before year 12 even began (With your textbooks) ? Share your stories please :) I plan to do WHATEVER it takes to get high marks - even if it means studying before school even begins - what's the best way to begin for me?

of course it's a good thing

No, I only revised like once before every SAc, and maybe 2-3 times for each exam, with each revision session taking 1-2 hours.

The trick is to study consistently (rather than cramming before exams and Sacs), and then at the end of the year, convince yourself that VCE is not important so that you don't feel the pressure during exams.

Yeah... but kyzoo... you are a GENIUS. I, for one, cannot get A+ scores unless I continually revise my stuff..

But Darren, don't worry! I was depressed after my English 3&4 exam too.. 2 weeks later, I'm just laughing at how dismal my performance was! And I guess I just keep on telling myself that I can repeat it next year.

Don't let stress take over your mentality.... by the sounds of it, you will do well! Make sure you ask for help on VN next year too.

Your gonna want to familiarize yourself with the Course Guides well before the year starts.

Also, don't neglect English. It's really really important to have a decent score, considering it's automatically top four.

Never worry about dreaming, aspire my friend aspire, anything you can dream you can achieve.

well like, by revision, I mean looking back at all your past notes.

I didn't really revise taht much because I spent a lot of time learning stuff really thoroughly the first time. Like, I went through every relevent page of the textbook and made notes =/

I don't know about other people, but I went cold-turkey on games this year.  Also avoided watching TV shows (movies are better, because they finish in a couple of hours, while TV series can last forever - hello LOST!).
In other words, just minimise distractions altogether (I'm looking at you Facebook). I got to the point where I was so bored, that I ended up studying, just to have something to do.
Last piece of "advice", utilise these coming summer holidays; they will be your best friend if you work your arse of over the break. I finished Unit 3 Accounting, the Further course and the Economics course over the break, and didn't need to really study much during the year. Unfortunately, I neglected English - DON'T DO THE SAME!

Yeah I know but I really want to just go through the pain and suffer for one year. I have so much at stake, I want to do the best I can. :(
I know I can do well. These past few years, especially this year, I have been slacking off SOOO much, I haven't done any homework basically..

This is the major sticking point for most VCE students. The 'fail is death' attitude - or 'my-life-is-ruined-unless-I-achieve-99+' attitude actually prevents you from achieving the scores you want. So many people I know cracked under the pressure of VCE. Don't join them - make plans for a gap year, sit the SAT - give yourself a metaphorical 'rope' to cling on to, so that VCE is not the be-all and end-all.

Amen! Take time to enjoy the ride. Don't miss too many opportunities to spend time with your friends, because they won't be around you forever. We're still young - don't ever forget that!

Regarding my previous post:

I did actually only study during the holidays. No "fun" whatsoever.

Despite missing out on MW2 altogether (still haven't played it), it was definitely worth it. A lot of hard work went a long way during the year. That sounds corny. Sorry.

if you're willing to put work in during the year it's not worth wasting your holidays. be sure to read your novels for enlgish/lit whatever but enjoy your holidays, it's the last pure freedom for a while.

-1. Sorry, but IMO, working hard yourself benefits significantly more than getting a tutor. Knowledge and motivation coming from thy self will grant thee tremendous success in the trails thou must face in VCE. :P

Mate. If you want to achieve, you do actually have to buckle down and study (like real study - on a desk, without a screen in front of you). Anybody who brags that they don't study for VCE (you know the ones - that always achieve the highest results), are lying 95% of the time.

Ah... I HATE those kinds of people.

Darren, in most cases, the amount of work you put in is proportional to your results.

My philosophy was based on my brother's. He also worked his butt off during the holidays (basically zero relaxing) and was able to ease off a little during the year while everyone else started studying. He achieved an ENTER of 99.75. Given this method has proven results, I also did the same.

Not studying before CAN be detrimental, but doesn't have to be. The choice ultimately lies with you. If you're willing to sacrifice your social life (During the year I went out a total of 2 times; including my 18th which consisted of merely going to the movies), you will amaze yourself with the results that you begin achieving.

VCE is not the most important thing in the world. I totally agree with everyone who says that you need to relax and rest to avoid burnout. But try for yourself and study non-stop for a while and see if you are actually "burnt out".

Sorry for my long posts :P

P.S. +1 for Chavi's post. You have got to be self-motivated. Find something to spur you on. My motivation was a list of things I would buy if I achieved a certain result.

No no nooo long posts are good. :)
Just needed the advice. I won't be a hermit.. but I think I can sacrifice a social life and replace it with study sessions w/ friends and I think my motivation this year will drive me.
So Asap... about the studying on holidays, you started on summer, yeah?

I started revision mid january, you can have a holiday and prepare. If you're willing to work consistently through semester, I don't see the need to learn the course before school starts.

I certainly don't see the need to cut your social life out entirely, that's counterproductive.

I've got a question about learning the course of the holidays. So basically, what does that entail? Is it simply going to the VCAA's site and getting the study design or, what? I'm a bit confused ><

Just read through your textbooks, do some questions, research a little on the internet. Anything to familiarize yourself with the material.

So true, with study you might not achieve what you wanted, but if you don't study then you will definitely not achieve your goals.

Oh and I cannot study without a screen in front of me haha, mainly because I spend so much time on wiki maths articles :P

For maths, try to go ahead and complete most of the exercises/chapters (I did every second or third question depending on difficulty). The textbook questions will basically never appear on exams, and are there just to help you understand the concepts. The real benefit comes from doing past exams and exam-type questions.

This is good advice.

Bring a bottle of water into the exams, it will help to relieve some stress and let your mind relax so you perform better ;)

Last thing you want is a stressed out mind and choking in the exam.

Just read the novels for english and take notes on them. If you want, go through the coursework and familiarise yourself with it. I don't think going too far ahead is going to help because once you start classes you'll more than likely begin to slack off and you'll end up at the same position as everyone else. You say you'll have the motivation now, but like most of us, it dries up pretty quick (atleast for me it did).

During the year I'd do checkpoints questions at the end of every topic, maybe go through a couple exams and do the questions on the relevant topic. Just familiarise yourself during the year with the type of exam questions that will be asked. The best thing to do, like others said, is to study during the year and gain a good understanding of everything so that you don't have to cram during the exam period. I probably should have listened to my own advice though...

Also, don't blame the exams. History is history, there really isn't anything they can make up to fool you. I was getting A+ all year in revolutions last year and choked on the exam too, ended up with a 35. It was my lack of studying and my belief that my sac marks would be a reflection on what I'd get for the exam that caused me to choke, not the exam.
