Title: Medicine Internationally
Post by: aznboy50 on December 30, 2010, 05:29:07 pm
Hey guys,

What if I were to an MD course in Croatia?

What are the odds of getting an internship here?

Extremely slim at best

Hey Russ,

If I was to do residency and internship there.

How would specialisation work? Could I come back here to do it or would I have to stay there? That's the real deal-breaker for me!

My preferences are really well defined atm:

1. Medicine at Monash
2. Medicine in another state
3. Biomedicine at Melbourne, attempt entry to MD
4. 5 year MD course in Croatia

As far as I know, contingent on your degree and whatever university you graduated from being recognized as acceptable to practice in Australia. This might require assessment or more training (ie become a resident again).

Not that it's something I know much about but getting a medical degree in one country doesn't mean you can go and work in another country

My doctor studied in Egypt, he said you have to take some tests to practise in the country and there are a lot of hoops to jump through but it ends up OK.

Surely, the AMA has tests for international doctors?

Yes of course they do, but like I said, it depends on your success/your education etc. There are also the unofficial factors of your domestic competitors I guess.

Not something I know much about, PD would be more efficient.

For what it's worth, in Croatia they take University a lot more seriously than here. You must maintain like ~90% attendance rate and the pass rate for tests is 60% and you must pass all units to be awarded the degree. However, your allowed up to 3 attempts at each unit, i.e, you repeat. I have two cousins studying medicine over there at the moment and they study extremely hard, harder than I've heard/seen any students over here studying.

So I would be extremely confident of passing those exams the AMA set.

Thanks for your help, I will look on PagingDr should the circumstance eventuate one day.

LOL how random that you mention Croatia. I can speak Croatian :P

Surely there would be other countries overseas that would allow for easier access in the MD course than a country like Croatia.

Regardless of the difficulty of medicine in another country, the fact that you studied overseas means that you're going to have everything to do. It's definitely the last resort as far as I'm concerned

It's not random, my father studied at the Uni so I will have it easier getting in etcetera.

Wow, fluent Croatian? Not many non-croats can...

Yeh, of course Russ, it's a plan C!

It's just if worst comes to worse...

NB: I will have it easier as the university encourages descendants of migrants to come back to university to study, hence makes entrance for them easier.

Haha um well being Croatian kinda helps :P And yes, I'm pretty fluent in it. I've never actually been to Croatia so knowing the language seems kinda useless to me atm.

Oh FE then. I automatically (incorrectly) assume all good students are Asian so seeing your 98.35 ATAR...

Btw, if I get an interview for Monash...

Apparently Shinny didn't get in initially, then called up and got in, so does that mean if I get an interview I can call and get in or something. Could somebody please explain this situation?

Bhahahaha. That's actually pretty hilarious and thank you! That makes me feel special haha. I'm honoured to even be grouped alongside asians :P They're like the all-mighty!

And I get where you're coming from. Croats aren't really known to be "academic"... More so, extremists at the Aus Open haha. In fact, the highest enter a relative of mine has had was 92 or something. So most of the relatives were pretty shocked with my score haha. It's not a regular occurrence for croats :D

Wait till you go to Croatia mate. They study more than the Asians, especially the ones who go to Uni.

But yeh, in general Croatian-Australians aren't the most academic bunch...

Where are you from, western suburbs or...?

Do med in sunway

Do med in sunway

Why? Croatia > Sunway

For one, Croatia has awesome beaches + heaps of my family and is mega-cheap, 7k euro a year.

but sunway is monash, and is australian accredited. Aren't you asian?

Nope...

Wouldn't I have to pay full-fee at Sunway?

I get a scholarship in Croatia because I am a citizen.

that's really rare. What he did was piss the shit out of them for an irregular offer ;]. He just kept calling and calling and calling. He had a decent umat, pro ENTER and probably had a decent interview.

and yea, you would pay full-fee but the conversion isn't too bad from memory.

Post by: aznboy50 on December 30, 2010, 10:49:22 pm
What conversion?

NB: Blonde moment

Trust me, I could piss the shit out of them double what Shinny did!

Do they make more than one irregular offer per year?

currency conversion means full-fee ain't that bad, maybe 5k more than CSP in melb for sunway? Not sure, you should check> it's australian credited which is why I think it's good if I could afford it AND, malaysian living costs are cheapp!
Title: Re: Medicine Internationally
Post by: aznboy50 on December 30, 2010, 10:56:34 pm
That's too expensive for me >.<

Can you elaborate on what Shinny did, how would I do this, assuming I get an interview... do they ask you repeatedly what your ATAR was, because I don't expect 99.70 >.<

I'm not too clear anymore on details, he kept calling hte faculty after offers were out and said have u given an irregular offer yet? Have I received one? yadida it annoyed the lady so much and he got it.

Will be doing similar if I get in the position.

Will phone call three times a day. Will visit the faculty every day to ask.

Then e-mail several times.

Then spend the rest of my time calling various faculty members.

Yeh, with scores like yours...
I respect your advice!

By the way, why did you only do 5 subjects across two years?
Title: Re: Medicine Internationally
Post by: iffets12345 on December 30, 2010, 11:44:06 pm
um I had uni maths lol. Don't respect my advice too much, there's proer people out there LOL.
but I mean, don't be too fussed about all this technical stuff, make sure you have the score you want to get into MBBS by studying, if not, which you find out in around august/sept (UMAT results), then start the paperwork for Croatia or whatever.

Nah I can do a Biomed degree here that counts to two years of MD for there. So would attempt Melbourne MD then if not go to Croatia. But I'm fairly confident I'll end up studying medicine here. Or interstate even... It's just a Plan C.
