Hey guys,

What if I were to an MD course in Croatia?

What are the odds of getting an internship here?

Hey Russ,

If I was to do residency and internship there.

How would specialisation work? Could I come back here to do it or would I have to stay there? That's the real deal-breaker for me!

My preferences are really well defined atm:

1. Medicine at Monash
2. Medicine in another state
3. Biomedicine at Melbourne, attempt entry to MD
4. 5 year MD course in Croatia

As far as I know, contingent on your degree and whatever university you graduated from being recognized as acceptable to practice in Australia. This might require assessment or more training (ie become a resident again).

Not that it's something I know much about but getting a medical degree in one country doesn't mean you can go and work in another country

My doctor studied in Egypt, he said you have to take some tests to practise in the country and there are a lot of hoops to jump through but it ends up OK.

Surely, the AMA has tests for international doctors?

Yes of course they do, but like I said, it depends on your success/your education etc. There are also the unofficial factors of your domestic competitors I guess.

Not something I know much about, PD would be more efficient.

For what it's worth, in Croatia they take University a lot more seriously than here. You must maintain like ~90% attendance rate and the pass rate for tests is 60% and you must pass all units to be awarded the degree. However, your allowed up to 3 attempts at each unit, i.e, you repeat. I have two cousins studying medicine over there at the moment and they study extremely hard, harder than I've heard/seen any students over here studying.

So I would be extremely confident of passing those exams the AMA set.

Thanks for your help, I will look on PagingDr should the circumstance eventuate one day.

LOL how random that you mention Croatia. I can speak Croatian :P

Surely there would be other countries overseas that would allow for easier access in the MD course than a country like Croatia.

Regardless of the difficulty of medicine in another country, the fact that you studied overseas means that you're going to have everything to do. It's definitely the last resort as far as I'm concerned

It's not random, my father studied at the Uni so I will have it easier getting in etcetera.

Wow, fluent Croatian? Not many non-croats can...

Yeh, of course Russ, it's a plan C!

It's just if worst comes to worse...

NB: I will have it easier as the university encourages descendants of migrants to come back to university to study, hence makes entrance for them easier.

Haha um well being Croatian kinda helps :P And yes, I'm pretty fluent in it. I've never actually been to Croatia so knowing the language seems kinda useless to me atm.

Btw, if I get an interview for Monash...

Apparently Shinny didn't get in initially, then called up and got in, so does that mean if I get an interview I can call and get in or something. Could somebody please explain this situation?
