p.s. monash pplz go away :P
p.s.s I am making everyone userbars like mine
-
Me
-
meeeeeeee
I've ditched Monash for this clearly superior University.
-
I'm in! I'm already researching the clubs/societies I want to join. The More Beer one looks interesting. :P
-
MEEEE!!!!
see you guys there!
can't believe i got in :D
-
Me! :D
I am sooooo excited to make some new friends!
Edit: Stonecold I've already stolen your userbar ::)
-
Meeeeeeeeee! :D
-
I'm still undecided. I'm either gonna defer my uq offer to save and travel for a year, or start biomed this year.
That userbar is encouraging me to stay though :)

Haha, you were telling me to go!
UniMelb just has this ring to it which makes it so appealing haha. :P

I'm on the committee. ;)

Worst team ever.

lol, yeah. I read your argument for staying on mso, and I now actually think I'd do the same thing if I were you. From what I've read Griffith does seem pretty dodgy.
I'm starting to think that I'd rather stay here with my friends and family and work hard to get into med, than go to brisbane to live with the bogans where the first two years will be relatively cruisey..
Will see though..
And yeah, Melbourne Uni is an awesome place to study. I studied in the biomed library last year and loved it (except when I got kicked out..) and the biomed subjects look really good. Also there's gonna be that massive new neuroscience facility next year!

Do any girls join? Cause I'd really find it really awkward if I were the only one. The picture on the student union page was all guys, lol.
-
is enrollment 24th for all faculties?
-
I am ;)
-
Haha yeah, there's a fairly even ratio of guys to girls at just about every uni event. We're also doing T-shirts this year! You can pick one up with your membership during O'Week. :)

WOAHHH awesome!! I want one

Haha that's official uni merchandise. Nothing to do with More Beer or any of the other clubs. :P
-
No way am I paying $100 for a hoodie. No matter how much I want one.
-
Yeah, they're a rip-off. Hardly anybody wears them. They're only $50 at the bookshop, though:

I know. I seriously am going to love that place. And yeah, Griffith seems very bottom tier med. I was surprised that so many people rate JCU above Griffith, so it mustn't be great.
Also, the provisional course has strings attached, and moving for what could be a BMP would be a flop.
As for that list, I don't know what I was stressing about haha. Every time I read it, it is so convincing, that I don't even see why I bothered applying there!

I'm in :)
Go melbs~

Yay for the one I want being only $30.
I'm so fussy. It had to have no zip but MUST have the pocket.

You all won't be so happy when it's 3am on a holiday and you're cramming so you'll understand the 2 hour lecture you have in 7 hours which is assessable in the prac an hour later. :P
-
Yup im going to melb! (science!)
-
Don't wear a uni hoody around campus, people will judge you.
Also, all this enthusiasm is making me feel less jaded and cynical about the uni. Oh well, I'll just hang around and wait it out :P
-
Has anyone else tried to enrol yet? And is anyone else (after creating their username and password) getting an error message when they try to log in to actually complete their enrolment?

team unimelb checkcheckin in.
who else is on team access melb? :D

ZOMG THIS HAPPENED TO ME TOO.

I went to here

then clicked Enrol in a new University of Melbourne course
but it also magically dies sometimes fuck.

The portal is the buggiest piece of software you'll ever encounter, if it doesn't work just keep trying

I just spoke to IT at UoM, and the guy said the new username and password will be added to the system overnight..

I remember this time last year when I was so excited about going to uni.
Anyway this isn't really the place to ask but does anyone know when you're allowed to create your timetable? Is it Feb 1 because the portal said 4 weeks before we go back.
-
Yeah, you enrol in subjects byJanuary 31 and then after January 31 sign up for classes :)
-

Do you mean see what your timetable will look like? Cuz you can (kinda) already do that by manually going to each subject page in the handbook and drafting it up. 2011 lecture and tute things are already there.
-
Shit yeah! UniMelb >>>>>>>> Everyone else
(Actually Monash is pretty good too)

I think I read somewhere that timetabling starts on Jan 30. My memory could be faulty though.
-
I mean actually enroll in a tute.
I don't want to miss the day because there is no way I am going to uni five days a week, no matter which course I am doing.
-
If you do boomed you can't avoid it haha.
And timetabling opens mid feb from memory, it's not straight after enrollment finishes

boomed

But I have no breadth >: I might still be able to push it around that much with the new system to get one day off.
-
help a unimelbrah out. how do I defer?
-
But I have no breadth >: I might still be able to push it around that much with the new system to get one day off.
True, they've apparently changed it since my 1st year when it was timetabled horribly (all the compulsory subjects were on different days)
-

Because Sci now takes preference over Arts timetabling - something which was realised last semester when the subjects were ridiculously timed and all clashed with one another.
Anyway, yes, and also we get to choose our own times from the beginning rather than getting the timetable made and then transfers becoming available later...

On the 31 January, every UoM'er to my place. The system never seems to crash where I am for some reason.

Sorry for the noob question...... buttttttt
do we get given a proper email address like [email protected] or something? I thought we would.... I've activated my account (student portal + email) but it just has my username as the first letter of my first name at the front of my surname. Do we get an actual email address? Cos I'm trying to register to make an itinerary for AAD and it says to put your email address in, I thought it meant our melb uni one or, does it mean your normal email address? :S
Sorry, just kinda confused by the whole email system and I tried calling 13 MELB and they didn't really help...
Hopefully a VNer will know!
Cheers :)

I went here https://webmail.student.unimelb.edu.au/src/login.php and logged in with the same username and pw I used to enrol. That should work in creating the email address.

THANK YOUUUUUUU! X a million :) :) :)
You should be teaching the people at 13 MELB how to help!
-
your email will be jsmith or smithj @student.unimelb.edu.au. @ugrad.edu.au will also work.
EDIT: 13 MELB? Since when can you even just call 'the uni'?
-
13MELB is the new call centre they set up to deal with this stuff. They offered me a job but I laughed in their faces, no amount of money is worth dealing with the crap their new system produces.

"Do you need help?
Call the Contact Centre on 13 MELB (136352) if calling within Australia, or phone +61-3-9035 5511, if calling from outside Australia, Monday to Friday 9am - 5pm AEST."
It had it on the enrolment page. Was on hold for like 15 minutes and had to listen to AWFUL opera music. The singing pierced my eardrums so I had to hold the phone like 30 cm away from my ear!
The guy didn't really know much. Every problem I said he's like " ohhhh...... ummmm yeah.....I'll email the IT dept about that"
-

It's because they're all uni students who wanted holiday work and ignored the training day :P
WRT to emails, just sign up for the google apps email and then you can just access your email through a regular gmail account

Oh wait I think I remember something about that. It's basically just a reception type service where they hear your problem and say "oh, sounds like you need to talk to x department," then either patch you through or give you their number. They might have a sheet with answers to some basic queries, but not a whole lot. Your best bet if you want something is to find the number of the relevant staff member or student centre on the website and call that.

That's exactly what I thought it would have been as soon as he answered the first question! haha I thought I was getting put through to melb uni specialists or something haha. But luckily VN answers basically all questions a hundred times better than any other source. So thanks guys! :)

WOO FOR TEAM UNIMELB...
Doing fourth year this year...I feel so old...

BOO YAA!!! repping melbourne uni!! Biomed!!
hmmmmm has anyone filled out the whole application form, including the one with the subjects and gone to next steps??
-
wooooooooooooooooooooo
so who's gonna be at UoM in 2011?
p.s. monash pplz go away :P
p.s.s I am making everyone userbars like mine
Me!!!
If I get into Masters I will also be at Melbourne uni in 2012 and 2013 and graduate from my masters degree the same time my sisters finish year 12.
-
Okay, so I logged in and reached the second last step which is the enrolling subjects/study plan/whatever you call it. I can leave it there until Academic Advice Day, right? What do we even bring to the enrolment during our allocated times? Mine's at 10am-11am on some street not far off the main campus.
I suck at paperwork hence my questions.
-
yeah ..i think you leave it there, for the enrolment-information session~i will just bring a pen and the booklet that came along with the letter, so i can write in it.
CHECKING IN ....CHECKED~~!hope i am not too late :D
also i have a question regarding to this quote
"Completing two majors may preclude students from being eligible for honours in either discipline. Students are advised to obtain course advice and plan their subjects carefully in order to keep their options open for honours."
it's from here http://www.bcom.unimelb.edu.au/bachelor/majors/majors.html
so ...is it good to do a double major or not?i want to do a honours degree as well...sighs ;D
THANKS ;)

Edit: Am I sure I'm smart enough for biomedicine, Can't even complete enrollment!

Haha, instead of the umat, uni's should just give med places to those that are able to enrol in the course properly.

We stop at the enrol into subjects yes?
Because we need to work out what type of Calculus + Physics + Breadth subjects we need to do yes?
This is for Biomed.

You've probably already got this link, but if not, the subject info is here: https://handbook.unimelb.edu.au/view/2011/B-BMED

Yeah. I have to do Calc II :( I wonder if they'll pick up on it if I just enrol in Calc I..
-
You can do Calc 1 if you want. Sort of a waste of a subject, though.
-
^ Yeah I want to do something similar. Apparently regular Physics is better than Physics for Biomedicine.
Don't think it is allowed though. :(
-

Awesome. Are you sure though? The handbook says "Students with a score of 30 or more in VCE Specialist Mathematics 3/4 will not be permitted to enrol in this subject"
I discovered I don't really like maths that much, so would much prefer to just do Calc I.
-
Oops, didn't notice that, since it was down the bottom of the page.
Calc 2 is easy, anyway.
-
^ Yeah I want to do something similar. Apparently regular Physics is better than Physics for Biomedicine.

Yeah, I read that too. Looks like something good came from me doing vce physics :) I do wonder which physics best prepares you for the gamsat though..
-
Oops, didn't notice that, since it was down the bottom of the page.
Calc 2 is easy, anyway.
Unfortunately we have to do a maths subject, and I really don't want to do Linear Algebra or Accelerated Mathematics.
-
Linear algebra is even easier than Calc 2, imo. Probably best to do calc 2 if you're doing biomed, though.
-

You learn most of the same stuff. It is just that the biomed one assumes you know nothing, and you have to learn everything from scratch in a very crammed amount of time.
And it doesn't even let you enroll in subjects past this year, as the ones after that need the 2011 ones as prerequisites. :P
I will just wait for AAD from here, and procrastinate and make a thread about breadth haha.
-
umm guys this is gonna sound dumb...but how do i enrol?
I have no clue on anything about melbourne because i was so sure i was going monash.
-
https://sis.unimelb.edu.au/enrolinanewcourse.html
Just follow the steps. :)
-
Linear algebra is even easier than Calc 2, imo. Probably best to do calc 2 if you're doing biomed, though.
Really? You're good at maths though yeah?
I find the course description kinda scary:
"Little of the material here has been seen at school and the level of understanding required represents an advance on previous studies."
@Stonecold. Oh, ok. THanks for the info. I feel like I've forgotten nearly everything I learnt in VCE physics..
I think I'll look into subjects a bit more over the next couple of days (I actually find it extremely fun; nerd here) and if I'm still unsure I'll wait till AAD too.
-
"Enrolment period has expired"
WTFFFFFFFFFFFF

Am I allowed to physics 2 with just vce physics? (I have done my own reading on the side as well...)
...Physics is my favorite and I would consider myself to have a 'sound background in physics'...
Or I could save all my questions for AAD... Yeah, that sounds like a great idea!
-
Another question. When it asks for all given names should i also include my preferred name or just given?
-

I just put my given name.
I'd prefer to be called Stroodle, but I'm sure the novelty would soon wear off.

Technically you could, but if you reckon you're that crash hot with physics, it would be better to do Physics 1: Advanced than Physics 2.
But fark advanced: just do Physics 1. :P

lol i didn't mean putting LFTM as the preferred name. I have a given name which is my asian name then a preferred name which is in english.

Technically you could, but if you reckon you're that crash hot with physics, it would be better to do Physics 1: Advanced than Physics 2.
But fark advanced: just do Physics 1. :P
...I don't think I'm crash hot at physics, The description of the course simply sounded better/more suited to what I want to learn...
Upon a more thorough inspection, they seem fairly similar.
I will inquire on Monday...
-
Another question. When it asks for all given names should i also include my preferred name or just given?
I just put my given name.
I'd prefer to be called Stroodle, but I'm sure the novelty would soon wear off.
lol i didn't mean putting LFTM as the preferred name. I have a given name which is my asian name then a preferred name which is in english.
haha, yeah, I was just kidding :)
I don't have much experience with asian names, so maybe someone else here is more qualified to respond. Otherwise I guess you could call them tomorrow.

Probably best to just do Physics for Biomed if you only plan to do one. :)

Yeah that's what I'm thinking now (after some more consideration). I don't want to jump into something that's too difficult/too much assumed and sour my university experience struggling through a subject.
I guess i just got carried a way a little at this hour and after a long day at work.
Thanks for your advice though!

I thought those who have done VCE Physics are not allowed to do Physics for Biomedicine but would need to do Physics 2: Life Sciences & Environment instead?

Hmm, it says that students who have done vce physics "normally will not be permitted to enrol in this subject"

Ah crap! If you got over 38 in Methods and didn't do Spesh, then you need to take this:
-Accelerated Mathematics 1 and 2
It sounds hard!!!

Damn man, that looks hardcore. I wonder if we actually have to do these subjects, or if they'll let us do others if we ask them nicely enough.

Really? Can't you just do Calculus 1? I thought Accelerated Mathematics 1 was available to those who got over 38 in spesh

I don't even know what I'm meant to do.
There is what I could do, ie, pretend I never even did methods.
And what I should do, ie, something that requires effort.

Talk about stressed and depressed.

Do you think they'll catch onto us school leavers if we enrol in a subject we're not supposed to? I want to do calc I and physics for biomed, but I did vce spesh and physics.
-
The uni has a transcript of all of your vce scores: enter, gat results, study scores, your grades for each subject, umat results, etc. Don't even try to trick them: they know what you've done. :P

You would be wiser to do the more advanced courses as they will put you ahead for what you want to do next?
But I think I did hear of some people who claimed they didn't remember enough from methods/whatever for them to take the next step up and that was a legitimate excuse for them.
(But I think they were SEAS)

Hmm, I'll try saying that then. Cheers.
It's actually true in my case.
btw, did u hit the car badly? u have insurance?

People do call the handbook their bible so...maybe the handbook is more credible?

Apparently when uni starts, they'll put up a list of student numbers of people who shouldn't be doing that subject and advise them to change before forcing them to change in the end anyway.

They want methods kids to do linear algebra?
gg.

If you only did methods, you do Calc1. If you did methods + spec. you do Calc2. If you did really well in Spec. you do Linear Algebra or Accelerated Maths.
Don't both trying to con the uni, they have all your details. You can plead your case but the coordinator will inevitably see it as you trying to get out of doing a harder subject so you need a really good reason.
-
YAY melbourne uni! :D
-
I called UoM, and they said they generally don't let people do maths/physics subjects outside of the guidelines that they've set, but you can ask on AAD, and they may let you.
Also, as per the email we received today, they say that we should pick our subjects before AAD. The girl on the phone said we can change them before the 31st if we want though.
-
I also called them, and they are going to call me back regarding this whole maths confusion.
More importantly, where can I find the settings for email clients so I can get my UniMelb email in Outlook? I cannot stand to use the online email.
Edit: Don't worry, found it. :)
http://www.its.unimelb.edu.au/support/email/settings
-
Outlook never worked with me for the uni email, if the same thing happens to you either: forward your mail to a gmail address or use your google apps address. I'm currently using google apps through outlook and it works fine
-
I managed to get out of doing Accelerated Math 1 after a whole lot of hassle, but I think it would be harder to get out of Calc II as Calc I pretty much repeats Specialist Math.
-

I've got it working if you want. :)
-
Hey for all the maths subjects we can only use a scientific calculator right? If that's the case then I probably won't mind it so much - I really hated using a CAS caluator..
-
Oh no it's working fine now, but years ago when I tried to set it up it gave me a lot of crap error messages :(
-
Yeah, Calc 1 is basically spesh, while Calc 2 is the next step up. They're both pretty easy, though: the only reason it seems hard in vce is because they're constantly throwing ridiculously tricky little bits of algebra at you to try and trip you up. They don't do that at uni.
Don't know anything about any UMEP changes. I did it in 2009 and it was basically equivalent to all of linear algebra, all of calc 2 (minus the stuff on ODEs) and most of real analysis. If you claim credit for it, you only get credit for Accelerated Mathematics 1, though.
-
Hey for all the maths subjects we can only use a scientific calculator right? If that's the case then I probably won't mind it so much - I really hated using a CAS caluator..
No, you don't get any calculator at all. The upside is that you don't need one, it's not that hard. Calc1 is easy anyway.
-
I haven't used a graphics calculator since high school. No calculator in maths and only a scientific in eng and physics.
-
Boo yeah!!!!
Biomed Guide has an error.
It is meant to be 38+ in Spesh for Accelerated Maths, not Metheds.
Easy Calc I here I come. :P
-
I told you that like...3 pages ago. There's no way they're forcing methods students into accelerated maths
-

Whoops, I missed it completely.
Thanks Russ. :)
-
Easy Calc I here I come. :P
I've heard there's an assignment basically each week for calc 1. urghhhhh... that'll be....fun :S
-
No calc is good!
-
Handbook makes amaths2 look harder than calc2 but there would be fairly large areas of overlap.
Easy Calc I here I come. :P
I've heard there's an assignment basically each week for calc 1. urghhhhh... that'll be....fun :S
The assignments are literally the easiest part of the course. The one time there was a question that nobody could do, they scrapped it and gave everyone the 2%
The way it works is you get two questions to do but only one of them is actually marked
-
haha thank god russ! I'm guessing the questions are extended response analysis type if there's only two of them?
-
No, they're really simple exercise questions like "find
if
"
edit, upon reflection that's implicit differentiation haha. but the point is, the questions won't be hard at all, they'll just be regular questions from the week's lectures
-
Okay, so I am trying to add my 1st year Calculus I, Physics for Biomedicine and Experimental Design & Data Analysis.
Whenever I search for them in my study plan, it just comes up blank.
Just happening to me, or everyone else?
Also, we don't need to add subjects beyond this year correct?
-
As said in the sticky, the study plan is crap. Don't search for them, enter the exact subject code (the new code, the one with the 4 letters at the front).
And just subjects for this year is fine
-

Yeah, I did do it with the subject codes. It still comes up with nothing. :S
-
It's working fine for me. Where are you entering the code? I put mine (UNIB30002) into the field just below the dropdown box, not the title one
-
Yeah, under the drop down box where it asks for subject code.
For example, I search MAST10011 and nothing comes up.
I also searched UNIB30002 and it didn't work.
I called them up and they just said to wait for AAD. I don't think they understood what I was talking about.

I haven't tried yet - still working out my breadth subjects (I wonder how hard latin is?).
I'll try soon though and let you know.
Have you decided what you're gonna do for breadth?
edit: I'll try now and see.

Nope, not coming up with anything for me too :(

And maybe this as a tack on subject, because it could help with the GAMSAT. Not sure atm.

LOL. They want us to enroll and we can't even do it yet!

Enrolled and selected units here.
Just letting you guys know...
Monash represent.

We can put in our subjects and change them after AAD? I'm so tempted to finish my entire enrolment, haha! :D

I think I'll probably go with the Logic, meaning and computation breadth track: https://handbook.unimelb.edu.au/view/2011/%21065XX-BRDM%2B1003
Would like to do Latin, but I think it'll probably be too much work..

Just so you guys know, you don't have to do an entire track. They were added this year with the changes to breadth, to make it easier for new students to see later year breadth subjects
FYI, you all need to do same sex desire, because otherwise i'm going to be might bored in lectures with nobody to talk to

Hoping so ;)
Haha, i'm actually undecided on breadth because it's my final choice to make and it doesn't matter that much. Don't want to do a science subject, someone tell me what breadth to pick!

Do same sex. I would if I swung that way :D
Wish they had an opposite sex desire subject. That only really cute girls and me did.

haha, do sociology of the body
-
Pick a beginner's language.
-

haha, do sociology of the body
That actually looks pretty interesting. Probably heaps more girls in there than in logic too :)
-
Pick a beginner's language.
Do you know if beginner's spanish is hard? I studied spanish for a year ( can't remember much though) so I'm considering it..
-
I've heard Spanish isn't too bad at beginner's level. If you're considering it, absolutely go for it. Uni is pretty much the only chance you'll have to properly learn a language without living in the country (teaching yourself is incredibly unlikely to work), so if there's even the slightest chance you'll regret not doing it, DO IT! ;)
I did beginners Japanese this year and found it very hard, given that I have almost no experience with Japanese or Chinese (damn Asian kids already knew what all the kanji meant!). Still, it was very fulfilling and I miraculously passed both. :P
haha, do sociology of the body
Bah, sex classes. They just try to get you in with the course descriptions, then teach you a bunch of boring stuff.
I remember last semester my friend (girl) got a text from a group member (girl) in her sex class about an assignment. I sneakily texted back a dirty message, then completely forgot to tell my friend about it. 4-5 weeks later my friend is telling a story in a pub about how one of her group members was acting really weird for weeks, then finally confronted her and told her that she was sorry but she didn't return the feelings she'd admitted to in her text. Cue WTF. It didn't click until near the end of the story that I was responsible. :P
-
I thought that there were several different levels for language subjects, the beginners' stream, post-VCE stream and advanced stream so that the beginners' subjects were suitable to those without prior knowledge of the language. But well done :) Doing a diploma of languages?
By 'beginners' I meant Level 1. The different streams are generally just starting points for people with different experience levels. For people who know nothing at all about it, you start at Level 1 (which most people call 'beginners'). People who did it in VCE start at Level 2 (which we call 'second year'). People who did really well in it in VCE start at Level 3, etc.
And yeah, Diploma of Languages. Just because my degree wasn't long enough as it is! :P *graduates in 2016*

You're my hero, that's brilliant
-
Haha. That's hilarious.
I think I'll skip spanish, pretty sure my workload will be big enough as it is, and I don't really have a natural talent for languages, like so many others seem to.

I failed year 10 French, if that's any indication of my 'natural talent for languages.' :P

Haha. That's hilarious.

Spanish is a pretty easy language to learn - one of the easiest for English Speakers. It won't be that much work, just work consistently and should be fine.. I'm probs doing Spanish xD

Just leave it blank and press search. It'll come up with two pathways: standard and bioengineering. Choose the pathway, and then you can enrol in the subjects you want.

Uni will ensure you will know more then just 'very basic', they teach it effectively I've heard, i'm sure you aren't that bad !
-
Haha. That's hilarious.
I think I'll skip spanish, pretty sure my workload will be big enough as it is, and I don't really have a natural talent for languages, like so many others seem to.
Spanish is a pretty easy language to learn - one of the easiest for English Speakers. It won't be that much work, just work consistently and should be fine.. I'm probs doing Spanish xD

I dunno about that. My friend did spanish at latrobe for 6 months, and was still only learning present tense at the end of it. I'd hardly call that conversational, or even basic conversational, but obviously that's just my opinion.
One of the main things that scares me (along the amount of time I'd need to put in) is the oral assessments..
That's just me though. Other people in the classes I took picked it up really quickly and were able to develop a pretty big vocabulary in a relatively short amount of time.

Anyone planning to do Bioengineering?
You have to take a different pathway in Biomed if so.
I think I will pass. You have to take the hard maths. :S

Ha, yeah I saw that. I won't be choosing that one either :)

Any recommendations on subject order?
Like you have to choose which semesters to do 'Calculus 1' and 'Experimental Design and Data Analysis'.
I am thinking maybe to do Calculus first, because then it could help out with Physics in Semester 2?
-
People generally do Calculus 2 in first semester, since for most people it's the most basic maths subject and needs to be out of the way quickly so you can apply the knowledge elsewhere. If you have to do Calculus 1, that's sort of lagging behind as far as course planning is concerned (since calculus opens a lot of doors if you want to change what you're doing), so you'll want to get it done ASAP. :P
-

Since you're doing biomed, you're going to do Physics 2: Life Science and Environments, which uses pretty much no calculus from what I can remember.

Did you enjoy Physics 2: Life Science and Environments? Much harder than vce physics?
btw, you only need to do Physics 2 if you did vce physics 3 & 4, otherwise you do physics for biomed.
-
Doesn't really make much difference, calculus doesn't overlap with physics much at all (other than basic algebra/differentiation). I'd do calc1 first, some of the stuff in EDDA benefits from it but there's not much to worry about

This. Calculus 1 is best done is 1st semester. Maths at uni is a little bit unique compared to other science offered (eg. handing up assignments, etc).
Also, make sure either Iain Scott or Deborah King is your lecturer. If either one of the Alex's is your lecturer, then you'll be in for a hard semester. :)
P.S. Iain Scott is the BOMB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
I don't understand all the love for Deb King. Someone explain that to me, she was the bane of my first semester. Julie Frearson was amazing and the best tutor ever though
-
Cos she is the coordinator for Calculus 1. Of course you need to "love" her. And she does teach Calc 1 very well but Iain Scott is the BOMB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Does Iain Scott teach calc 2 and/or accelerated maths 1? He sounds pretty good :)
-

I think he can but doesn't. I've only seen him lecture Real Analysis, Calc 1 and be a tutor for Linear Algebra. I think he does more subjects but I probably haven't heard (yet).
And yes, I would sincerely rate him as one of the best in the department, although John Sader would come close to knocking him off his perch.

I personally enjoyed the concepts and such a lot more than Physics 1 and VCE Physics, mainly due to the fact it was linked to human body stuff. It's harder than VCE Physics in the sense that you need to grasp the fundamental concepts a lot better to understand what you're doing, and it's less calculations, more concepts based.

Sounds good. I found vce physics to be extremely dry. It was definitely my least favourite subject.
Hopefully I'll remember it well enough to do well in Physics 2: Life Science and Environments..

When will we know our timetables?
Do we get to choose our lecture times and stuff?
and how many days a week does a typical student attend uni?

On the 31 January starting at 10 am, you will be able to construct your entire timetable on the student portal. You can either create it from scratch or let the system "try" to create a class-free timetable for you and then you can move things around. You will be able to choose everything - lectures, tutes, labs and seminars (if applicable) based on the times they are offered.
How many days a week a student attends uni depends on the course they are doing. Arts and Commerce students may be able to get days off but biomed and science students on the other hand will be extremely lucky in first year.
P.S. I don't think biomed students can have a day off in first year based on their contact hours... But I'm not sure. Russ will be able to inform you.
-

Couple of weeks before uni starts, from memory.
Yeah, the old system auto-allocated everyone, but now you pick classes from the available times. Be warned that they fill up fast, so get in quick!
5 days a week for most students; 4 if they're incredibly lucky and those 4 days will probably be packed. Commerce and arts usually have about 2-3 days worth, but because of timetabling, it's generally spread out over 4 days.
EDIT: Biomed will be just over 20 hours a week, most likely. So 5 days a week of class.
-
I have 12 hours this semester and I have 5 days of uni - you're not getting 20+ hours in 4 days

Are any new biomed students able to add subjects (other than the core ones)? I still can't do it :( Nothing comes up when I put in the codes, or try any of the search options.
Did you have any luck yet Stonecold?
-
Biomed student have notoriously bad luck when it comes to the portal. :P

Have you tried searching general terms like 'Biology' and 'Chemistry'? I typed in anatomy for mine and stuff came up even though the subject titles didn't have the word anatomy in them...
-
Nothing under "Biology" or "Chemisty" or anything else I've tried. It's only letting me enrol in cores, and breadth subjects :(
-
Just search for nothing (Ie leave text box empty)
Then a new section appears below the search area, this allows you to change things like maths subjects and physics etc...
Should be able to take it from there? (the key is the first part...)

lol yeah, I expected to see every subject when I did it as searching for anything yielded no results. Then that little toolbar thing came up and I was able to advance to the next stage of the intelligence test.

You definitely deserve to be in biomed! :D Discovering that little trick is basically the equivalent of finding the chambers of secrets as far as I'm concerned. THANK YOU!

Arrrrrrtttttttttssssssssssssss <3
Also, I was accepted into college (:
FYI, you all need to do same sex desire, because otherwise i'm going to be might bored in lectures with nobody to talk to
Is this a subject? COOL.

I bet I could do it I'm not even kidding.
I crammed 16 hours into three days.
-
I crammed 23 hours into 4 days for semester 1 last year. Though it meant 10-5 days for Monday, Wednesdays and Friday. 9-6.30 on a Tuesday. It was horrible, semester 2 I spread it out, and all was good :)
-
Actually my four day weekend was the most depressing thing ever because I never left the desk.

Yeah it is, it looks good but it's got that...breadthy bullshit feel to it.
Been considering this one but that's mostly because i want to watch LOTR for uni assessment haha
-
So i just enrolled. I clicked the red button and it says offer accepted.
What do i do next?

Keep going. There should be more red buttons. You have to confirm your details and subjects if you know them, or wait til AAD.
-
So this is what I'm planning on doing in first year:
Core subjects + Calc II in semester 1, EDD in semester 2, and Physics 2 LS&E in semester 2. Also one breadth per semester - most likely from the Logic, meaning and computation track.
Does this seem ok?
-
Given that biomedicine offers you next to no options until 2nd year, yes that's fine
-
Awesome. Thanks.
-
am i the only one doing b.of Environments of all these VN members??? it seems like most are either commerce or biomed.... :(
-
Do 'From Rock to Rave' as third yr breadth.

Okay guys I'm basically dying right now SOMEBODY HELP ME.
-
Frustrated now, I want to choose my subjects but I can't because I have some stupid sanction because I had duplicate accounts due to me accidentally applying through VTAC twice...I'll have to ring UniMelb tomorrow to ask them to fix this one I suppose...

I don't know whether to accept my offer or irregular offer to Science.
-
I don't know whether to accept my offer or irregular offer to Science.
How you gonna choose all those science electives when you can barely even decide on which degree to do?
:P
-
I don't know whether to accept my offer or irregular offer to Science.
If I apply for an irregular offer will I still be able to accept either one (main round offer or irregular)?????
-
If im doing bachelor of commerce, i do 3 commerce subjects and one breadth?

You're not fooling anyone - we all know you just want another toolbar..
What do u want to do? If you don't know, just become a doctor I say.
Oh, and Stonecold has a good point.
-
I don't know whether to accept my offer or irregular offer to Science.

Yeah you can take either if you get the additional offer. Just apply for the irregular offer and continue with accepting the first round offer and if you get the irregular one then you decide.
-
You guys are so helpful hahaha.
Well I would do Psychology major or Animal Health so that's already pretty much decided :>
I'm just unsure if I'm cut out for the GAMSAT etc. and I'm not sure I want to do anything else biomed will give me.
Also I'm wondering the same thing about offers - if I haven't accepted Bbmed and if I do apply to Science do I still get to choose between either? Or do I have to accept Bmed for that to work? Because then I will get some call from the uni telling me I've enrolled twice.
-

Oh awesome, thank you.
Do I really have to contact selection officers before submitting an application for an irregular offer? I'm only considering one other course right now anyway so no need..right?.
-
I don't know the protocol for applying for it, sorry. Just read up about it I guess.

To be honest with you I would have chosen science if I didn't like all the subjects in the biomed course (with the exception of maths - which I could take or leave).
Did you like the immunology stuff you did in the VCE? What don't you like about the biomed course?

Well I liked every part of Biology, so yes! And what I don't like is being boxed in, because that's what I am in my current course and it sucks >:
I love Chemistry and Biology, never taken Physics so I can't speak for it and maths is something we all have to live with.

hmm, I think I'll contact them first. There's still one more offer I can get from 2nd round and I don't wish to forfeit my eligibility by applying for an irregular offer to a course that has no vacancies left.
Basically I screwed up my preferences back in december lol.

I don't mind being boxed into something I like :)
Also one of the biggest things that turns me off Science is that many of the students don't seem to be that serious. I sat in on the first year biology lectures last year at UoM, and there were sooo many students that just came in and chatted the whole time about irrelevant crap, which I, and my friend, found really distracting. I personally feel that I will perform a lot better in a more serious cohort.
As for physics, it seems to me that most people either like it or hate it (at least in vce). I didn't like vce physics, but at the same time I didn't find it particularly challenging, and got a half decent score with minimal effort.
Sorry I don't really know how to help other than telling you my situation - hopefully some of it applies to you too...

Yeah I understand what you mean about the caliber of the cohort, it can be dismal depending on who you get that day.
I'm scared of being boxed in to things I think I like, because of my prior experiences with media.

Hmm, maybe you should carefully read through all the subject descriptions (if you haven't already), speak to biomed students, and also possibly a uni councillor to see if that helps you?
Edit: If you liked vce bio, I think there's a good chance you'll like a great deal of the biomed course. Obviously I don't know for sure though..

-
is the handbook on the website?
i just really wasn't prepared for melbourne thats all.

I might like it but it's about where it goes.
I'm already in one dead end course, don't want to begin another.

Yepp!
Here is the breadth handbook.
https://handbook.unimelb.edu.au/faces/htdocs/user/breadth/BreadthSearch.jsp?year=current
Just choose Commerce, and it will show all of the subjects you can do. Keep in mind the restrictions regarding to levels which I mentioned earlier.
They also have these things called 'Breadth Tracks'. It is just basically a group of semi-prescribed subjects from the same domain (such as a language or biology for example) which is kinda like a breadth plan if you aim to study subjects all from the same area. It is not set so you can change it around to whatever subjects you like.
And you are not required to take a breadth track, but apparently it is recommended. I still am unsure over whether to take lots of random subjects or take a group of linguistics subjects.
-
is the handbook on the website?
i just really wasn't prepared for melbourne thats all.
Yepp!
Here is the breadth handbook.

The only reason to take a track is if you like all the subject. When the uni recommends something, it's completely optional.
RE mavis:
I'm just unsure if I'm cut out for the GAMSAT
You're probably the perfect candidate for the GAMSAT, far more so than students who do methods/spec/physics/chem in year 12 and then science at uni. At UoM 2/3rds of your GAMSAT mark is determined by your ability in the humanities. The fact that I did 2 histories (+ lit) during VCE probably helped me a lot.
You probably won't feel boxed in during biomed, depending on what you want. In first year you're forced to do chem/bio/maths but the chem and bio you'd be doing anyway and the maths...well...you can scrape through the maths. Once you hit second year, the core subjects are probably the best the uni has to offer in any degree and you can pick your own electives/major
Also one of the biggest things that turns me off Science is that many of the students don't seem to be that serious. I sat in on the first year biology lectures last year at UoM, and there were sooo many students that just came in and chatted the whole time about irrelevant crap, which I, and my friend, found really distracting.
Literally all of this will happen in biomed as well, especially in 1st year. people in 1st year don't know anything anyway, that's why they're talking in lectures :P
-
I've been on hold for literally four minutes and they're all 'we're busier than usual'.
Are you kidding me? 20 minutes would be a good day.
-
It's because all the new students don't know what the university is like and they don't want to scare them off before they're committed to paying money
-
Ughhghhghhhhgh.
I had two calls and the first one was all 'don't accept your offer until you're 150% sure because you cannot be enrolled in two courses at once'.
Helpful!
And then the second one was all 'rawrrrr IF YOU GET AN OFFER TO SCIENCE YOU HAVE TO ACCEPT IT BECAUSE YOU'RE STEALING PLACES FROM OTHER WORTHY STUDENTS'.
Confuses me more.
-
Did you ask how another student is more worthy if you got an offer and they didn't?
-
Lol that's a good point. I'm kind of stuck now, I guess I will feel better if I apply for an irregular offer so I may as well do it.
She didn't make it amazingly clear to me, whether my original offer from Bmed still stands and whether my chances of being offered a place in science diminish if I have already enrolled in the institution.
-
I'm going to sound really dumb here but I hope this can be cleared up.
What's the thing with levels for every subject? Level 1, 2 and 3. What's the difference? Then I realise the subjects has to be according to the course structure (credit points, etc). I'm still trying to get my way through, though I already have a rough idea of what I like to do.
It's insane!
-
It's not that insane :(
Basically, you need to do 300 points of study over 3 years. 100 points a year, every subject is 12.5 points (yes some aren't but deal with that if it matters).
Level 1 = first year, level 2 = second year, level 3 = third year
You do not need to do 8 level 1, 8 level 2 and 8 level 3 subjects. You cannot do more than 10 level 1 subjects. You do not need to do only level 1 subjects in first year and so forth.
I don't know what your goal is for your degree, but in first year you'll probably be taking your basic subjects - maths, physics, biology, chemistry etc. depending on what you hope to major in. They will mostly be level 1. You can fill in any gaps with any subjects you're allowed to take. In second year, you'll do mostly level 2 subjects, the direct prerequisites for the subjects in your major. In third year, you'll do a major (level 3 subjects) plus anything else you feel like (ie the 2-4 spaces left over, because a major is 4 subjects)

You can enroll. But unless you are sure what to choose than probably best to wait til Monday.
It is no biggie though. You can drop subjects and add new ones if you choose the wrong thing or change your mind. :)
Also, does anyone know if it is possible to get timetables yet, or is that Jan 31?

According to the Melbs it's 10am on Jan 31st !

Australian citizens and permanent humanitarian visa holders will receive a discount of 20% for up-front payments greater than $500. Permanent residents and New Zealand citizens studying in Commonwealth Supported Places are required to pay the full student contribution up-front without discount.
So you only get 20% off if you pay >500 each year?

Yeah, and I think it is for the amount you pay.
So if you pay $1000, then I would assume that takes off $1250 from your debt.

Because I will have credit for breadth and psychology so I only have to do 50 points all year, 25 per sem.

why wouldn't you just start second year subjects, or do extra electives so you can have a lighter load in second and/or third year where the work is harder? :\

Because I want to save money for exchange by working more next year (as in like, part time job working) and I'm not sure what I will major in exactly :)
Also I can't do a whole bunch of second year subjects because I won't have done Biology or Chemistry until 2012.

Are subjects that are compulsory meant to automatically appear on my study plan?

Ah I see, I see. Though you could do all your breadth/electives, but that's your choice xD
fuuuun exchange! where to?

Does anyone know what im doing wrong? im trying to choose subjects but when i enter a subject code it says no matches found.

Just enter nothing, then hit search. It should then come up with the different pathways you can choose.
It took us ages to work this out too haha.

oh wow. thanks, i was getting a bit frustrated for a while lol

Timetabling isn't that bad, I've always gotten what I wanted from it (science classes are way better than arts classes for timetabling).
Also, just so you know, being there at 10am isn't going to help you much. The server will lag and it'll take 5 minutes to load the study plan timetable app and when it does, it'll tell you there are no vacancies. Way easier to wait a few hours or days and then do it (they don't even open up all the spots on the first day)
edit,
2011 diaries are now available, once you get your student card you can pick one up from your student centre. And if you want to avoid the flood of new students, go grab one now. A little birdie also told me that Biomedicine scholarships were sent out on Thursday the 19th
-
Does that mean first years should get them on AAD? (the diary + student card) Or do we wait till O week or even later :S
-
No, you won't get your student card on AAD. If you revisit the university between AAD and O week you can though
-
AWESOME. Im gonna grab one on monday

I don't know why I want a 2011 diary, given I have 2010 and 2009 diaries sitting on my desk in pristine condition. Maybe for the cover artwork or the amusing "discretion guaranteed" pregnancy testing ads.
-

I only found out about the scholarships yesterday. :(
The uni should advertise them better!

Having less subjects remaining in your degree will be extremely useful when it comes to organising exchange, trust me. :P

Not for meeeee, I have to do four subjects at Penn to be enrolled and with breadth pretty much already done I kind of only have to do one or two breadth subjects, which means I am saving larger work loads for exchange.
-
eh might as well join in
Last year of commerce here I come (I feel old).
-
just got a melbourne uni hoodie!
what up!

More Beer t-shirts ftw!

For science, they usually do. Last semester I didn't bother going on at 10 am. I did mine at ~5 PM and still got all my classes.
This year, I'll do the same except I'm not sure since I'm doing less popular subjects. There'll be no problems with allocating the lectures (since there's only one stream :P ) but tutes on the other hand, are dwindling in numbers.

As in a replica of VN except for Unimelb?
-
There's really no need for one, but facebook has quite a few groups for uni students

No. If there was, I would be there rather than here. :P
-
I would love a forum where people did my uni work for me heh

No. If there was, I would be there rather than here. :P
So true. The amount of "under the table" stuff that would go on. It makes you wonder, doesn't it? :P
EDIT: Russ, stop beating me to it. :P And you were a little bit too "revealing". :P

Is the only way i can change my personal details by calling them??
-
Go into the uni like everybody else.
-
ok where do i go though?
Do i go to the faculty i'm enrolled in?

Okay so I submitted my application for course withdrawal and then I had a thought WHAT IF I GET LOCKED OUT OF THE PORTAL FOR NOT BEING ENROLLED IN ANYTHING ANYMORE.
I will be eternally angered.
-

Yep. Commerce student centre if your userbar is sincere (like mine).
-

How do you apply for that job, I am getting a very illegal 12.50 an hour.
-
13MELB had applications last year, they posted it on the careers website. Can't remember what the pay grade was, but it was one of the casual ones.
The careers website is pretty good for finding tutoring jobs and okay for finding other jobs
-
I get about $25/hr. Hell yeah.
-
Haha I think their pay rate is the HEW 1 level that's about $24. The call centre isn't a very good idea. Basically they want all calls directed to a central point (like an operator) where the number is looked up and redirected. So if I have to call another staff in another department, I would call 13MELB which takes 30 minutes + during busy times before the call gets redirected :o
-
Call switch directly, the number is on the UoM site somewhere
-
Yeah definitely. But it's annoying how they have the 13MELB number everywhere. Look at the Portal notices, they have the 13MELB contact number and email on every admin notice. It's probably going to take twice as long to get something done for those unaware - an email to be processed/redirected by 13MELB will take ~3 working days and another 3 working for the destination dept. Not very productive...

-
I don't even understand why this happened, who decided it was a good idea to reduce call waiting times by directing all calls to the one place? How did they even make it through university, let alone work for one?
-
It's there because you have a lot of people who are completely incapable of figuring out where to go and what to do themselves, so a focal point to direct all queries becomes necessary.
-
How are those people even considering applying to/attending/finishing university? Haha, I kid.
-
Sacrifice convenience for "customer service".
It's how the Melbourne Model rolls... I guess.

The Melbourne Model is a brilliant innovation that will revolutionize Australian tertiary education
