Title: Time management issues
Post by: Sunshine on January 26, 2011, 11:08:03 pm
Hi guys, hope you are enjoying the holidays:) I am really worried about not having enough time to study for year 12 this year. I will have sport around 4 days a week and I am looking for a job which may take up 2 days. I really need the money so there's no chance of me not getting a job. I may be able to cut my sport down to 3 days a week but that only leaves me around 2-3 free days. Even including the free periods I have at school I don't know if that will be enough.
I'm aiming for a 90+ atar. Is this a problem? Do you have any advice or time management tips that may help me?
Thanks:)

That's pretty rough, but it all comes down to how confident you are with your studying capabilities. If you think that using you can achieve a 90+ with two relatively intense extra curricular activities, then you should be okay but personally I'd do everything I can to get out of picking up the part time job.

That said, there's plenty of time that goes to waste everyday in everybody's lives, it's usually not hard to find some extra time to study.

Well - Pay attention in class.
I found that I retain more information if I were to actively listen in class - others may also find it helpful.
However, I chose not to and decided to do everything myself (oops).

What subjects are you doing by the way?

Those 2-3 'free' days that you speak of.
Determine exactly when you get the chance to study.
Decide what do you plan to achieve in those days.

I'll tell you now.
4hrs per subject per week should be sufficient if you study effectively (not 4hr blocks, maybe shuffle the subjects in hour-blocks).

Good luck.

I've already have done health and HD last year and got a 38 ( and it wasn't a strong subject.
Though this year I'm doing
further maths
P.E
English
psychology
business management
what makes it harder is that most of these subjects get marked down!
There is no way of me getting out of getting a job.I really love playing my sport but if it takes up too much time should I quit?

Yeah - most of your subjects are rote-learnable.
You should be fine if you are willing to commit.

If you prepare notes in card form, you can pull them out during travel, homeroom, detention etc.
English - aim for an essay per week (1 hour per essay only - more than sufficient).
Further you might need more time practicing questions.

Yeah - see how much time is left for study.
Allocate tasks to complete within that time.

And no - I wouldn't quit what I love.

Thanks,
it may not come down to this since Im having trouble finding a job( where I can only work 1-2 shifts a week including Sundays and also being nearly 18 doesn't help)
But yeah I figured doing simpler subjects would make it easier.

I think you may also (in addition to what is already mentioned in above posts) have to work in lunchtimes (and other breaks) at school to do some work. Just to ease the workload at home a bit. (it will give an extra 5 hours of week of work less to do at home)

Lol...
I would go crazy if I didn't have a break between periods.

But if it works for you, Sunshine, by all means.

^^ So would I, but then again, I don't have Sunshine's massive workload (I couldn't cope with all of that...)

Yeah, I'm actually starting to think I will cope. My subjects aren't that hard and will not much study last year I got good marks. I played my sport last year aswell and I coped fine.
Do you get more homework in year 12 than year 11? because most people I talk to say that year 11 is worse.
And the sport will only take up an hour on each of those three days so I'll still get my 2 hours study on these days .... I hope.

Not that much homework in  year 12

That's a relief. How many hours a week did you do while
completing year 12? I know it will be a lot of hard work but I'm ready for it. Sometimes my sport will only be 2 days a week. And like I said I'm trying to get a job that offers me shifts on say a friday night or Sunday.

Do you think I will be putting too much pressure on myself?

Imo you should just prioritise what needs to be done each night, even though you may not be able to do something every night it would be good to complete one task.

I suggest that you continue with your sports and job for now. When/If you feel you're under too much stress and pressure than maybe you can cut down the amount of shifts you do, or even quit?

Yeah, i was thinking that.
But 1 night is just a kinda casual game of netball and there have been times where I couldn't play last year and my sister just played for me. The more I think of it, the more I find that I was doing this last year anyway( except the job thing) but I was hardly doing any study on weekends anyway.

Well just be efficient with the time you have. Also perhaps you can devote one day of the weekend to complete study - that's if you're not playing sports or working.

Yeah I thought sunday but I also would have Monday and Thursday completely free after school so I would spend that time studying. Then hopefully work Friday nights( I never study on Fridays) and Sunday mornings.

I reckon you should cut down on your sport.

Am I right in saying that you do more than one actual sport?
Choose your favourite and continue just with that one.

Actually cancel my last post. Continue your sport if ya love it bro :)

And your aim's 90 ATAR? You'll get it easy!
Apply that same dedication (with your sport) to your studies and your set!

+1 You don't necessarily have to give up your sport(s); as long as you are putting a fair amount of time and effort into your studies you shuold be able to cope.

I've read somewhere that a lot of the high achieving people are those who do extra-curricular activities and that doing these will help you have an outlet where you don't have to worry about study so that you don't burn out.

Actually chromeo I just play the one sport but I just found out that 1 don't have to train two nights a week anymore so now it's just 3 days of sport( round about an hour each)
haha, thanks for the encouragement:)

swarley, I know last year when I had sport on but sacs coming up I didn't go and my coach understood. So I think I will be able to cope.
Thanks:)

And captainawesome I hope your right:)

There is an option in "Account Related Settings"; tick the box next to "Hide email address from public?".
