The GAT vague?! NEVER

I disliked a lot of the questions, especially the really ambiguous questions with a joke/cartoon. I enjoyed the analytical ones though, with maths involved. I know it's stupid of me, but I skipped the first essay, I didn't know how to write an essay without arguing some kind of point and I thought it'll be okay if I skipped it since I'm only in year 11 and I don't do a Year 12 english subject.

Was super bored as well, I just sat there for two hours doing nothing.

mannn that was such a waste of time!!!
the writing tasks were gay :S.
multi choice wasn't so bad but meh.
for the gas question i put $150, it's probably wrong though.

worst Q on the GAT was the one to do with the oceans, temps and salinity =_=
Title: Re: So how was it?

I hated the ocean, temperature and salinity question too, but over all I quite enjoy it. Atleast the Diamond piece of writing was more interesting and easier to write about (IMO) than the Halley IV station from last year.

I wrote a short story -- 3.5 pages. Probably would get crap for it because I barely used any of the info except for the Koh-i-Hor diamonds  :D

For Task 2, I couldn't be bothered -- wrote 1.5 pages.

aha for the first task i actually just jotted notes down...it was sposed to be a 'note taking' exercise to help with a school report for the school trip to a diamond factory. roflll

second writing task i did a tv show transcript about how the wrong ppl are being idolised as heroes blah blah blah

I said "Prosperity" was a contrast to the poem.... that probably lost me a mark, right? -.-

The rest was ok-ish.
Title: Re: So how was it?

I thought writing task 2 was okay. I felt like I was just repeating the information given for the diamond one, even though I made attempts to link ideas up.

I actually don't mind the GAT. I think by doing it you learn a lot about your strengths and wekanesses. It's nice to have a low-stress exam.

Btw I said Prosperity was a contrast as well  :-\

We know Q= 5 , U=3, V=6 , X=1

P should be 10
W should be 9
S should be 4
T should be 2

P+Q+U+T= 20
S+Q+T+V= 17
U+T+V+W=20

P+Q+S+U+T+V+W+X= 40

T=2

Sub in 2 and see what u get. its the same thing as asking for how many people has all 3 diseases yes?

2+3+5+10=20 (20 ppl had asthma)
2+5+4+6=17 (had bronchtis)
2+3+6+9=20 (had emphysema)

all letters combined including x, is =40, when t= 2

I did a lot better last year than this year, simply because I took this one as a joke :P
walked out more than an hour early, rushed through multi-choice in about 30 min, i didnt even think for the harder questions! [like that venn diagram one :P ]
oh well, it was good fun xD

did anyone actually take it seriously? :P

I took the MC relatively serious.. during writing task 2 I had really bad heart pains and had to leave for 10 minutes with the superviser and that stuffed me up for a bit, so I stayed till 1.15 and went all over my answers (however, I still made quite a few errors lol).

I didn't, but a few people in my school did.
I finished with like over an hour to go (mainly cause I just rushed it all and wrote major BS) but then it started pouring outside and looked cold, So i stayed inside the room then when the rain eased off, I left.

17. A - Antithesis
18. B - Hyperbole
19. D - Paradox

am i the only person who REALLY tried?
Nah, I gave a decent effort for the writing tasks and multiple choice.. although I rushed a bit with some of the MC Qs.

Sub in 2 and see what u get. its the same thing as asking for how many people has all 3 diseases yes?

2+3+5+10=20 (20 ppl had asthma)
2+5+4+6=17 (had bronchtis)
2+3+6+9=20 (had emphysema)

all letters combined including x, is =40, when t= 2

didn't you forget the one who didnt have any of those? so 40 - 1..39 were in the actual circles.\ the x= 1...and i got what Mao got..4

I found the oceans one fairly easy, the only bit that was weird was Antarctica, I then realised it was a small black square!!

LOL,

The flowering questiong was anoying...

And my piece on Diamonds....

I wrote about a Russian millitary group using diamonds in the future for defence purposes,

Hahaha.. Then I used a whole bunch of complex chemistry to confuse (H)

Title: Re: So how was it?
Post by: /0 on June 13, 2008, 05:41:11 pm
For the ocean's one at 5 degrees you can just get 27 mg/mL and at 15 you nearly also get 27mg/mL so I thourhg salinity was generally more reliable

Yeah made a mistake on that last paint question

For ocean Qs: DCACB
Title: Re: So how was it?
Post by: Mao on June 13, 2008, 05:45:37 pm
for Q52 [oceans, increase in temp -> ?]

the answer should be B, a decrease in density.

temperature and salinity arent really related [they are two variables independant of each other]

however, density is a relationship between these two variables [shown by the contours]. as you go up the temperature axis, the values the contours represent becomes less and less => decrease in density.

(i put B)

when you press "quote", press "ENTER" straight afterwards and it'll take you to the bottom.

sometimes when the previous post is too long, it does not all fit in the "Quick Reply" box, and if you click the "bottom" of the box, you end up typing into the quote [very often seen :P ]

Yeah I was talking about that question in an earlier post...it was the most annoying thing ever! I gave up on the last 2 questions about that information and guessed them, but I happened to guess one of them right lol. I wrote about 2.5 pages for each writing task. Don't worry, it's about quality more than quantity :) Last year I wrote about the same amount, and ended up with a score of 45 for written communication, so it's nothing major if you don't write that much!

The GAT was so much fun! For the diamonds writing task, I was such a journalist, saying weird phrases like 'and as we navigate towards Ghana' and so on.

Then for the heroes piece, I said something really crazy about the fact that heroes are only human, and can't always achieve the expectations placed on them. I said something along the lines of 'lets pretend your mother is your hero. Now, hypothetically picture this situation. She must drive, no, to be more adventurous, fly, to a burning building, located 200 miles from your nearest shopping complex, in 3 minutes, all whilst trying to miraculously obtain a hose to put out the fire, and on top of that, rescue 20 different accountants from their cubicles... It is just not possible'.

Lol, I miss the GAT already!

Yeah, those types of problems can be pretty challenging, but it's actually quite easy if you take it step by step. For that question, if you consider each of the four false statements one at a time and arranging the names in some sort of ladder as you go, the problem solves itself :)

I approached it like this:
Read first false information and wrote what I could about the 2 people (ther possible positions)
Read 2nd false info... if any of this could narrow down the position of 1-4 for the first 2 people i wood cross out the non-possibilities etc
