Hey all.
I'm a science student and doing Introductory to microeconomics in semester 2, however i have never done any commerce related subject since year 9. So im not really confident. Could anyone who has done this subject last semester PLEASE PLEASE send me the lecture notes for it so i can just read ahead in order to make the subject less daunting??
Thanks, and really appreciate the efforts!!
-
I did, albeit in 2010.
Do you understand the concepts of supply and demand? If so, you've passed the subject. :)
It is most certainly not daunting. Since I did it in first semester, I had Jeff Borland. Not sure if he's lecturing in semester 2 though.
-
Just for attending you gain 10%, mmmm
Gloam, do they offer comprehensive solutions to past papers?

i've heard that he might not be lecturing Sem 2, but like Gloam said, it's not that daunting.
I was at your position at the start of this year, never done any commerce related subjects at all. So, i reckon you'll be fine!

Jeff Borland is hands down the best commerce lecturer I've had, but I don't think he lectures in Semester 2. I also thought he had gone off to Harvard after my year (2008).
In anycase, I do have his notes Cuddlekins. PM me your e-mail!!

Yeah, we went to Harvard in 2010 of semester 2 as well. One of the best memories were:
1. The video contest.
2. Game theory as the last topic. Best topic ever, hands down.
Gloam, do they offer comprehensive solutions to past papers?
Yes, for the short answer questions - from memory. I think economics is a subject where they have to give you comprehensive answers for the short answer questions. Or else, you wouldn't know how much detail to put in.
-
Been stalking the Video Competition. Gotta be honest, recent winners have been rubbish, but the social optimum one was cool.
-
awww so no Jeff Borland next sem :(. Can you guys give me some tips ? :) btw is there a learning centre where you ask questions etc.. haha sorry about the noob questions- just that science subjects had these not sure if commerce does.
-
yeah ..The videos~!!! He showed us during one of the lectures ...I have to admit he is one good Lecturer!!
also ...there are consults ~~! so no worries
-
yea i did intro micro for my breadth (im also doing science at melb), i wouldn't panic at all, its a manageable subject.
It definitely is different to most of your science subjects but it also offers a nice break from them. And yea as simonhu and kopite said Jeff truly is good, it is quite a shame you didn't take it in first semester :P.
Also the resources available are excellent, and the tutorials are great too.
-
awww :( do you know if the lecturer for sem 2 would be any good ? :)
-
you will survive with the lecture notes provided...so don't stress~!

Commerce subjects typically have "pit-stop tutorials" where there will be a tutor on duty to answer any queries that you may have. Just rock up to the designated room at the right time and ask away. :)
The lecturer will usually publish the timetable for pit-stops early in the semester.

Have you seen this one? It won first prize in my semester.

Just make sure you don't go near Accounting!! Most other commerce stuff I've heard is alright. Accounting Reports and Analysis has to be the worst subject I've done in my life though. Avoid it like the plague.
-
ARA is same as vce accounting pretty much. It is ATA that kills

ARA is pretty much a repeat of VCE accounting. But yes, I've heard horror stories from accounting as well. But if you're a commerce student, you should be doing ARA and ATA because what's the point of holding a commerce degree if you can't even read an accounting spreadsheet?
I've heard management is also pretty dry as well but that's only from one person.
EDIT: Beaten with ARA.
-
I did Intro Micro as my breadth in the semester just gone. It's odd, despite finding the content really dry, this subject had my favorite lecturer and tutor by far.
The exam was a bit of a disaster for me, mostly due to the fact it was the same day as Chem, pretty confident i did enough to scrap a P though. The content is't really that difficult, and with a little bit of effort high grades should be easy, especially considering 15% of the marks are for a very simple mid sem test and turning up to tutes.
-
If you have never touched accounting before ARA is death. But yes, all those who did accounting in VCE found it a breeze.
All I can say is, thank god I never have to do accounting again! :P

having chem on the same day was just death )=

Who was your tutor? and any heads up on any tutors that are great?
Thanks

What marks have people been getting for this subject?
-

How much harder is ATA? I just did ARA and am getting a little concerned about the workload for ATA - everyone seems to hate it!!
-

It's an easy H3+ subject. I had chem on the same day as well and I managed to pull off a H2B. Even though I was disappointed because I knew I could have done better, I'd say it was a good sacrifice for Chem haha

lol, its pretty easy, just do the practice questions that gets put up prior to the exam. The lecturer tells you what topics each question on the exam covers so you're basically set if you can be motivated in doing some work for it.

How far apart were the exams? Is H1 extremely difficult to achieve?
-
there is also an On-line tutor to ask questions anonymously ... its like a formspring lol
i think you'll find it easy to keep up to date with and enjoy it :)

I remember the one for ARA was totally useless. the person replying would say something like. "Go back to your lectures and check there." "Go ask your tutor" "What do you mean, can you repeat the question".

The exam timetable is different every semester. It just so happened that Micro and Chem fell on the same day.
It's a level 1 subject and designed to be completed in first semester for commerce students because it's a core. As such, the subject is easy if you apply yourself.*
*ACM 1 & definitely ACM 2 are two famous but not surprising exceptions unfortunately.

worst. subject. ever.

i've hear it's four times as hard as ARA....
OT: Micro is pretty easy, it's also interesting, i wouldn't worry too much about getting ahead, if you understand demand and supply you can go to sleep for the first 4 weeks, pay attention to theory of firm, and then have fun with game thory (best topic ever as gloamy said)
any heads up on any tutors that are great?
Thanks
I had Daniel Mu, he was really good and always happy to answer any questions you had
-
Which is hardest topic, firm?
-
yeah, theory of firm, it's just about understand some graphs, not too bad once you get your head around them :)
-
I considered micro but...yeah economics and I are not friends
-
Hey sorry this is a bit off topic but does Jeff Borland lecture this subject: UNIB10010 https://handbook.unimelb.edu.au/view/2011/UNIB10010
he is listed as subject coordinator. it'd be great if he was, i liked his microeconomis lectures last semester
-
Anyone who has experience: Is finance 1 harder/easier than micro?
-
can anyone send me jeff borland's lectures recordings for microec in first sem ? it would be greattttttttttttttt :)
-

micro is probably easier? but they're both easy.

one of my friends did this, but dont think she had him. subject coordinators does not always equal lecturer.

As Kopite said, both are easy but I found finance 1 easier. But I can't compare because I did finance 1 over summer and since it was already easy during the semester, over the summer it was even easier.
