I got an A for mid year. Can I still get a SS of 40+ ? >:(
I was hoping for an A+
-
Yes, but you will have to get a high A+ on the next exam.
-
Thanks Eriny
I really thought I had an A+ for this exam. I put everything I had into it.
I am really disappointed, I don't know what else I could've done to achieve that allusive A+.
-
Yeah, the gap between A and A+ in work quality is quite small, but as results go up it's exponentially harder to get certain scores. What I mean by this is that few things differentiate A from A+, but in order to get the extra few marks that bump your A to an A+ is hard to get. I hope that's understandable.
In any case, remember that everything in VCE is graded on a curve, which means that you have to beat a very high percentage of people in order to get the higher marks. An A itself is quite an achievement, even though it's very frustrating to not get the A+.
If it helps, it's usually much easier to score higher on the end of year exam because by that stage, many more students have 'given up' and you know more about what's expected of you.
-
What if we miss the A+ mark by 1 mark? Do we still need to get a high A+ on the next exam?
-

Your grade is arbitrary, it's the sum of your results over the 2 exams which matters
-
Really Bubble? That makes me feel a lot better. So if I went to the grade distributions on VCAA and added up both unit 3 and 4 for 2007, the range I would get for A+ is what I need to aim for in my next unit 4 exam?
-
I reckon they marked it really hard this year for Psychology.
Got an A. :(
-
When will grade distributions come out?

i'm the same as you. i got an A but thought i gave it everything. at the end of the day you can't change your mark, you can only hope that you will score higher on the end of year exam. i still hope to get over 40 as well..
-
I got an A+.
-
A+ here aswell. happy happy
is it too late to get statement of marks?
-
I got an A+ YAY! :) I'm so happy
-
I got A+!!!!!!!! LOOK OUT 40....................................................
Had to wait all day to get the result thought :-\
-
im really disappointed i got a b+
are my chances for a 40 and above gone? :(
-

To be quite honest, there is almost no hope. However, if you pulled a near perfect mark on exam 2 then you could probably still get 40+
Sorry
-
oh really thats a real downer :(
-
but costargh cant be 100% sure.
so may as well try ur hardest and give all ur effort.
depends which school ,sac rank etc as well
-
i had to wait all day to get my results, i was stressing big time. I started thinking i did well then started thinking i did bad... i was a mess lol, i didnt have psych today so had to go to my co-ordinator after school. BUT IT WAS ALL WORTH IT..i got A+, only 6 out of 80 psych students got A+ at my school
-

i'm in he same boat. ended up with an a+ but was stressed all day....actaully had the SAC for memory for forgetting today as well which made it worse..
-
well done everyone!
i got an A+ - i'm ecstatic (:
When will grade distributions come out?
you can find them here: http://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/vce/statistics/2008/midyear/midyear.html

there is still hope.... this is crap. the exam is only worth 33% and B+ is the 3rd top mark. it also depends on your sac marks and other exam mark you get, school etc. costargh doesn't know what he is talking about. i know cos i got B+ too.

I think he is right :S. It may sound blunt but it's the truth...high 30's is still possible but not a 40
-
Fine, choose to blindly seek what you desire, you won't get it unless you absolutely ace the 2nd exam.
Want to look at it this way Mr "one poster and somehow knows everything about VCE system"?
B+ on the mid year for Pysch could put your mark between the top 34% and top 21% in the state.
Only 9% of students get a study score of 40 or above.
Hmmm...
-

Goodness, I didn't realise that would come out so quick.
Also, I need 82/90 to get an A+. That's 3.5 more than last year; wonder if i can make it.
-
I've heard of 2 past Biology students who got B+ for the mid yr, absolutely aced the end of yr and got 40.
It's pretty unlikely but it has happened so..
-
Oh my god. A+ cut off was 164!! That's the highest it's ever been!
-
I've heard of 2 past Biology students who got B+ for the mid yr, absolutely aced the end of yr and got 40.

And that's the only scenario where I said it would be possible :)
-
Oh my god. A+ cut off was 164!! That's the highest it's ever been!
Yea, though I've accepted my A and have to move on, the thing that really gets to me is that I missed out on an A+ by a MAXIMUM of 3.5 marks =/
And it could have been like 1 mark
But I'm relieved by the fact that your specific mark doesnt matter (A+, A... etc).... its your MARKS that matter (what you got out of 180), so if I got a high A, I'm still in with a shot at 40+ and I have close marks to those who got a low A+... thats what kept me going :D:D:D:D
But I really have to pull my head in earlier this time, procastonated so so much last time round
-
If I were you I wouldn't be too stressed out about whether you got an A or an A+. Who cares? In the end the only thing that matters is the sum of your scores for this exam and the end of year exam. The 'Grade' is just a way of classifying scores, just an over-hyped letter stamped to your paper. It doesn't matter.
-
Oh my god. A+ cut off was 164!! That's the highest it's ever been!
Yep, and I thought it was of comparable difficulty to last year's exam.
-
are we still able to get a statement of results?
-
are we still able to get a statement of results?
Yes :)
http://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/schooladmin/forms/vce/statemarksinspectscripts.pdf
-
and how long will it take before i receive them?
looking at the statement of results makes me sick lol, if i got the same mark for last years exam it would have been an A :(
-
Probably 3-4 working days for a guess?
If you sent it tonight or tomoz you would be lucky to get it Fri, if not then either on Monday or Tuesday
-
They don't send them out until about ten days after the results release date.
-
A+ here! I'm really pleased!
But 50% of my class got an A+
A further 20% got A
And noone got below a C
pretty happy right now
-
^wow you have a really talented cohort :)
-
well, be very happy with an A, i done terrible, i got D+ :-[
but most of my class got D, a few c's and c+'s and 1 A
-
They don't send them out until about ten days after the results release date.
Wow really? I thought they started sending them a few days after.
Soz for giving the wrong information guys!
-
I got an A, I'm really happy. Only two people in my class got an A+ so... woohoo!
Just be happy with what you got, and eventhough it is the nature of the VCE don't compare yourself to other people, it just makes you feel crap... or feel good and then feel crap for feeling good that they didn't do as well as you... basically: comparing sucks.
Accept, move on, work hard
-
so, a high cut-off for A+ generally means that many students did very well on this exam?
-
so, a high cut-off for A+ generally means that many students did very well on this exam?
yeah, 10% [i think] got 164/180 which is more than average [according to Nick]
-
before i decide to purchase a SoM, i was wondering if someone could tell me what format it's in and exactly what kind of information will be included?
-
how many marks you got (out of 180), where you lost the marks that you lost, and what the correct answers are
-
so there won't be any explanation or anything, just, for example, a short answer question: you got 2 out of 3?
-
so there won't be any explanation or anything, just, for example, a short answer question: you got 2 out of 3?
yeh thats all it has
e.g. Question 3 Maximum mark 4 ...mark acheived 3 etc

I'll put up a pic of my SoM as soon as I found the damned camera cable lol
-
lol thanks ninwa (:
-
right
I couldn't find the camera cable so had to make do with crappy camera phone ... so excuse the poor quality
also I don't know how to do html so bear with me

AHHH HOW TO PUT IMAGES IN A POST???
edit: nvm did it :D
-
I got an A, was expecting an A+ as were many others I know who got A's (while a few did get A+) but looking at the grade distribution I am not entirely surprised. Guess I'll just have to work harder for the next exam.
-
I posted this in another board but can anyone clarify this? :
I missed out on an A+ by 4 marks according to my score of 160/180. If this was out of 90, I'd only have missed out by 2 marks.
Do I have to work for an additional 4 or 2 marks in my next exam?
-
Out of 90, you now need to make up 4 marks to be at the bare minimum A+ mark for both exams combined.
If the A+ range stayed the same for the end of year, you would now need 84/90
-
Thanks Costargh, but if its out of 90, why would I need to make up 4? If I got an A+ for the second exam, and got 2 marks extra to spare, couldn't that be counted for 2 on the first exam, technically making it so that I got A+?
-
I got 81.5/90
if only I could have gotten 0.5 marks more, made me depressed for a day, I'm still happy
-
If A+ cut off for both exams was 82/90, and you got 82/90 for both then you would get 164/180 for mid year and end of year combined
If you got 80/90 for mid year and got 82/90 for end of year you would end up with 162/180 which obviously doesn't make the minimum A+ cut off. HOWEVER, consider this fact, not everyone that got A+ on exam one will get A+ on end of year so you don't really need to get the minimum (using the way Ive used)... but heres another thing to consider... for pysch is it 10% of people that get A+?.... only 9% get 40+ SS so it adds another thing to think about
-
I got 81.5/90
if only I could have gotten 0.5 marks more, made me depressed for a day, I'm still happy
Damn... good work though! SEEE you basically got an A+ so dont fret and just work harder! =)
-
Thanks Costargh, but if its out of 90, why would I need to make up 4? If I got an A+ for the second exam, and got 2 marks extra to spare, couldn't that be counted for 2 on the first exam, technically making it so that I got A+?
since you got 80/90 for exam 1, 2 of the 4 marks will make up the marks needed for the A+ in the first exam, leaving you with 82/90 for the second exam, which averaged out would be a borderline A+ for both
i think costargh meant gain 4, not make up 4
And if we didn't take into account the second exam at all, technically I would only to make up 2 extra. I kinda get it now, I hope.
Thanks for the help guys. I've been fretting :(
And good job psychlaw - you were more upset than I've been! Haha.
-
hey,
i just got my SoM in the mail and dropped 2 marks in psych, wondering if anyone can tell me where i stand at the moment if i repeat that in exam 2.
thanks.
-
I don't like to predict scores. But, if you're ranked (very) highly in your cohort, you should get very high 40s-50?
But the cut-off for an A+ was higher this year than last, so it's hard to compare years...
-
hey,

Is that two marks before or after doubling? You need to specify because at the moment that means nothing unless you tell us lol.
-
WELL SCUSE MY FRENCH BUT FUCK LIFE
i got a c+ in my mid yr and didnt think it was possible.
ANY SUGGESTIONS? i need motivation...
-
hey, yeah sorry i should have specified.
that was before doubling. ended up with 176/180 after doubling.
and dont worry about the c+ buddy, the beauty of a midyear in a subject is if you stuff it up you can always gain back some ground on exam 2. just study, know your stuff and make sure you do plenty of practice exams!
-
Ham,
If you do the same on the end-of-year exam and get similar SAC results, you are looking at a 48-50.
-
thanks for your time and help,
i actually really enjoy psych - getting a score like that was just a huge bonus.
thanks again
-
After doubling I lost 5 marks on exam one, so you are on your way to a 50. You may have to do a bit better on the next exam though. Obviously, as other people have said, the cutoffs this year have changed so it's difficult to base it on last year's results. In any case, if you replicate your efforts in exam 2, you're going to get a very good score, so congrats.
-
for those who did psych last year-
do you think exam 1 is generally easier or harder than exam 2?
i mean, on a whole if you did past papers ect.
-
In terms of getting a higher grade score, it's easier on the second exam because by that stage many people have 'given up' and therefore, anyone who is actually prepared for the second exam will be ranked comparatively higher and will get a higher letter grade for roughly the same amount of effort.
But, if you're more concerned with the number of questions you get right or wrong, the two exams are equivalent on average though it'll be different every year. You'll probably do better on topics you've engaged with more but that's not always the case.
-
apparently if you get a score of 50 the goverment gives you $1000. True or false?
just wondering...
-

False.
If you are in the top 500 students in australia enter wise you do get $2000 though :P
-
really what for?
To try and lure you to a Government Job.
Is there a prize for last place?
I could tank for it, although there would be some tough competition

WOW! I had no idea about that!
What kind of ENTER does that equate to though?

I didn't know either, but by my calculations...above 99.5. But I don't know if that calculation can be trusted.
-
anyone here won that prize?
-
I think it's based on raw study scores as opposed to ENTER scores.
-
If you get 5 subjects (over 2 years) with study scores 46 or above you get the award. I think its called the high achievers award or something
? I'm not sure.
-
just wondering if you get a low A+ for the psychology exam 1. what would be the range in terms of study score would still be achievable..?
-
They do use raw scores only, I'm not sure why.
-

Thats a VCE/VCAA award. The thing I posted before is from the federal government. Someone from my schools other campus who did better than me in terms of raw scores but got 99.80 didn't get it, yet I did, so yeah I don't know :P
-

does that have to be raw?
if so, some hack could hit 47 in further while someone could be doing spesh and hit 37 which goes to 46, making them ineligible for consideration. beats me why they use raw scores to calculate the median study scores for a school. theyre pretty meaningless
roly, that's the premier's all-round high achiever award, it's different to this federal govt award
yeh, i agree gonzo, raw scores are way overrated
-
Hehe, wow, I never knew that the Government gave out such rewarding incentives to students. It really makes you want to study hard and achieve the best mark possible!
-
$2000 for your soul?
I gave my soul away for free, it has spent the last 2-3 years in New Zealand :P

YOU LEGEND AHMAD!
-
I don't think they are. I'm only aware that the top 500 nationally get the award. I don't think they distinguish between say people who get 99.80 based on their raw scores, if one gets it I don't see why another shouldn't. Then again, I don't have precise information regarding their selection process. :)
-
heyy me and my friend got a B+ and a B..
not that happy.. but was wondering if we get an A+ at the end of year exam whats the highest study score we can get with our mid year results?
B ?
and
B+?
-
Yeah i got a B+ for my mid year too, i'm getting 98-100% for all my sacs, what do you reckon my chances of getting 40 are?
-
Yeah i got a B+ for my mid year too, i'm getting 98-100% for all my sacs, what do you reckon my chances of getting 40 are?
you could definately still get a 40, just push hard in exam 2 and try to lose as minimum marks as possible (im talking like 2 or 3 marks max, before doubling)
its possible, your doing well in sacs

I think we may need to make room for a new psych mod... congratulations to Jess who despite being sick during the time, lost only 1 mark (89/90) on the psych exam, she did the best out of everyone I think :D... so yea congrats :)
(she didnt ask me to put this here by the way, I just wanted to let you guys know)
-
Pyschlaw, I think you should remove that post immediately if you haven't gained her permission.

I told her to post it but she thought it'd "bragging", so I posted it instead :)
she said thats really nice, so I think I might just have her permission there
-
Ahk, no worries, just wanted to make sure. :)
Jess, add me on msn (in my profile :) )
Oh and congrads on that awesome score Jess. You are a genius and you have done it against the odds which makes it all the more incredible. :)

+1 there. Just because someone doesn't post much doesn't mean their achievements are any less valid. I wish some of the 'heavyweights' on this site remembered that :(

hmmm I didn't mean the whole state, just the site. And yea you can never be sure she did the best on this site even, thats why I wrote "I think" :D (I think she did the best, because she almost got full marks, and I havn't seen anyone post a higher result, so yea) :)
-
well considering how rare it would be for someone to get full marks ... I think psychlaw's assumption is somewhat valid lol
congrats Jess, you deserve it :)
-
Congrats Jess :)
-
Yay, go Jess!
-
Aw thanks guys :)
-
:) :D ;D 8-)
-
Congrats to everyone! I'm sure you have all performed to the best of your abilities, and will no doubt perform twice as well in the end of year exams! :D
-
I got an e+...what do i win again? Nah got an A+, but who could be bothered paying $8 to get it back! $8!!!!!!!!!1111one1! I COULD BUY LUNCH WITH THAT SORT OF MONEY
no im not pov, just stingy
-
get your parents to pay. Chances are, they're are as curious as you.
-
get your parents to pay. Chances are, they're are as curious as you.
If you have parents that would dish out $8 per subject, then wow, you're lucky.
-
I only got 2 statement of marks in my time as a VCE student. I think they're worth it for mid-years, not so much for end-of-years when you already have your study score.
-
I only got 2 statement of marks in my time as a VCE student. I think they're worth it for mid-years
definately, back this statement up 100%
I got an A on the midyear, but wanted an A+, so I was pretty annoyed at the time
but thanks to the statement, turns out I only JUST missed out on an A+ (by half a mark)
so yea, that made me feel a whole lot better, and its thanks to the statement, its definately worth it
