Title: Mid-year Results 2008
Post by: itsme on August 04, 2008, 01:41:05 pm
I got an A for mid year. Can I still get a SS of 40+ ? >:(

I was hoping for an A+

Yes, but you will have to get a high A+ on the next exam.

Thanks Eriny

I really thought I had an A+ for this exam. I put everything I had into it.

I am really disappointed, I don't know what else I could've done to achieve that allusive A+.

Title: Re: Mid-year Results 2008

Yeah, the gap between A and A+ in work quality is quite small, but as results go up it's exponentially harder to get certain scores. What I mean by this is that few things differentiate A from A+, but in order to get the extra few marks that bump your A to an A+ is hard to get. I hope that's understandable.

In any case, remember that everything in VCE is graded on a curve, which means that you have to beat a very high percentage of people in order to get the higher marks. An A itself is quite an achievement, even though it's very frustrating to not get the A+.

If it helps, it's usually much easier to score higher on the end of year exam because by that stage, many more students have 'given up' and you know more about what's expected of you.

Your grade is arbitrary, it's the sum of your results over the 2 exams which matters

Really Bubble? That makes me feel a lot better. So if I went to the grade distributions on VCAA and added up both unit 3 and 4 for 2007, the range I would get for A+ is what I need to aim for in my next unit 4 exam?

i'm the same as you. i got an A but thought i gave it everything. at the end of the day you can't change your mark, you can only hope that you will score higher on the end of year exam. i still hope to get over 40 as well..

To be quite honest, there is almost no hope. However, if you pulled a near perfect mark on exam 2 then you could probably still get 40+

there is still hope.... this is crap. the exam is only worth 33% and B+ is the 3rd top mark. it also depends on your sac marks and other exam mark you get, school etc. costargh doesn't know what he is talking about. i know cos i got B+ too.

Fine, choose to blindly seek what you desire, you won't get it unless you absolutely ace the 2nd exam.

Want to look at it this way Mr "one poster and somehow knows everything about VCE system"?

B+ on the mid year for Pysch could put your mark between the top 34% and top 21% in the state.

Only 9% of students get a study score of 40 or above.

Hmmm...

Goodness, I didn't realise that would come out so quick.

Also, I need 82/90 to get an A+. That's 3.5 more than last year; wonder if i can make it.

Yea, though I've accepted my A and have to move on, the thing that really gets to me is that I missed out on an A+ by a MAXIMUM of 3.5 marks =/
And it could have been like 1 mark

But I'm relieved by the fact that your specific mark doesnt matter (A+, A... etc).... its your MARKS that matter (what you got out of 180), so if I got a high A, I'm still in with a shot at 40+ and I have close marks to those who got a low A+... thats what kept me going  :D:D:D:D

But I really have to pull my head in earlier this time, procastonated so so much last time round

If I were you I wouldn't be too stressed out about whether you got an A or an A+. Who cares? In the end the only thing that matters is the sum of your scores for this exam and the end of year exam. The 'Grade' is just a way of classifying scores, just an over-hyped letter stamped to your paper. It doesn't matter.

Just be happy with what you got, and eventhough it is the nature of the VCE don't compare yourself to other people, it just makes you feel crap... or feel good and then feel crap for feeling good that they didn't do as well as you... basically: comparing sucks.

I got an A, was expecting an A+ as were many others I know who got A's (while a few did get A+) but looking at the grade distribution I am not entirely surprised. Guess I'll just have to work harder for the next exam.
Title: Re: Mid-year Results 2008

I posted this in another board but can anyone clarify this? :

I missed out on an A+ by 4 marks according to my score of 160/180. If this was out of 90, I'd only have missed out by 2 marks.

Do I have to work for an additional 4 or 2 marks in my next exam?
Title: Re: Mid-year Results 2008
Post by: costargh on August 06, 2008, 05:15:21 pm
Out of 90, you now need to make up 4 marks to be at the bare minimum A+ mark for both exams combined.

If the A+ range stayed the same for the end of year, you would now need 84/90
Title: Re: Mid-year Results 2008
Post by: username on August 06, 2008, 05:23:25 pm
Thanks Costargh, but if its out of 90, why would I need to make up 4?  If I got an A+ for the second exam, and got 2 marks extra to spare, couldn't that be counted for 2 on the first exam, technically making it so that I got A+?
Title: Re: Mid-year Results 2008
Post by: psychlaw on August 06, 2008, 05:29:42 pm
I got 81.5/90

if only I could have gotten 0.5 marks more, made me depressed for a day, I'm still happy
Title: Re: Mid-year Results 2008
Post by: costargh on August 06, 2008, 05:30:11 pm
If A+ cut off for both exams was 82/90, and you got 82/90 for both then you would get 164/180 for mid year and end of year combined

If you got 80/90 for mid year and got 82/90 for end of year you would end up with 162/180 which obviously doesn't make the minimum A+ cut off. HOWEVER, consider this fact, not everyone that got A+ on exam one will get A+ on end of year so you don't really need to get the minimum (using the way Ive used)... but heres another thing to consider... for pysch is it 10% of people that get A+?.... only 9% get 40+ SS so it adds another thing to think about

since you got 80/90 for exam 1, 2 of the 4 marks will make up the marks needed for the A+ in the first exam, leaving you with 82/90 for the second exam, which averaged out would be a borderline A+ for both
i think costargh meant gain 4, not make up 4

And if we didn't take into account the second exam at all, technically I would only to make up 2 extra. I kinda get it now, I hope.

Thanks for the help guys. I've been fretting :(

And good job psychlaw - you were more upset than I've been! Haha.

I don't like to predict scores. But, if you're ranked (very) highly in your cohort, you should get very high 40s-50?

But the cut-off for an A+ was higher this year than last, so it's hard to compare years...

that was before doubling. ended up with 176/180 after doubling.

and dont worry about the c+ buddy, the beauty of a midyear in a subject is if you stuff it up you can always gain back some ground on exam 2. just study, know your stuff and make sure you do plenty of practice exams!

After doubling I lost 5 marks on exam one, so you are on your way to a 50. You may have to do a bit better on the next exam though. Obviously, as other people have said, the cutoffs this year have changed so it's difficult to base it on last year's results. In any case, if you replicate your efforts in exam 2, you're going to get a very good score, so congrats.
Title: Re: Mid-year Results 2008

for those who did psych last year-
do you think exam 1 is generally easier or harder than exam 2?
i mean, on a whole if you did past papers ect.
Title: Re: Mid-year Results 2008
Post by: Eriny on August 13, 2008, 04:24:50 pm
In terms of getting a higher grade score, it's easier on the second exam because by that stage many people have 'given up' and therefore, anyone who is actually prepared for the second exam will be ranked comparatively higher and will get a higher letter grade for roughly the same amount of effort.

But, if you're more concerned with the number of questions you get right or wrong, the two exams are equivalent on average though it'll be different every year. You'll probably do better on topics you've engaged with more but that's not always the case.

I didn't know either, but by my calculations...above 99.5. But I don't know if that calculation can be trusted.

I think it's based on raw study scores as opposed to ENTER scores.

If you get 5 subjects (over 2 years) with study scores 46 or above you get the award. I think its called the high achievers award or something
? I'm not sure.

just wondering if you get a low A+ for the psychology exam 1. what would be the range in terms of study score would still be achievable..?

They do use raw scores only, I'm not sure why.

Thats a VCE/VCAA award. The thing I posted before is from the federal government. Someone from my schools other campus who did better than me in terms of raw scores but got 99.80 didn't get it, yet I did, so yeah I don't know :P

does that have to be raw?

if so, some hack could hit 47 in further while someone could be doing spesh and hit 37 which goes to 46, making them ineligible for consideration. beats me why they use raw scores to calculate the median study scores for a school. theyre pretty meaningless

roly, that's the premier's all-round high achiever award, it's different to this federal govt award

yeh, i agree gonzo, raw scores are way overrated

Hehe, wow, I never knew that the Government gave out such rewarding incentives to students. It really makes you want to study hard and achieve the best mark possible!

I don't think they are. I'm only aware that the top 500 nationally get the award. I don't think they distinguish between say people who get 99.80 based on their raw scores, if one gets it I don't see why another shouldn't. Then again, I don't have precise information regarding their selection process. :)

you could definately still get a 40, just push hard in exam 2 and try to lose as minimum marks as possible (im talking like 2 or 3 marks max, before doubling)
its possible, your doing well in sacs

+1 there. Just because someone doesn't post much doesn't mean their achievements are any less valid. I wish some of the 'heavyweights' on this site remembered that :(

hmmm I didn't mean the whole state, just the site. And yea you can never be sure she did the best on this site even, thats why I wrote "I think" :D (I think she did the best, because she almost got full marks, and I havn't seen anyone post a higher result, so yea) :)

If you have parents that would dish out $8 per subject, then wow, you're lucky.

I only got 2 statement of marks in my time as a VCE student. I think they're worth it for mid-years, not so much for end-of-years when you already have your study score.

definately, back this statement up 100%

I got an A on the midyear, but wanted an A+, so I was pretty annoyed at the time
but thanks to the statement, turns out I only JUST missed out on an A+ (by half a mark)

so yea, that made me feel a whole lot better, and its thanks to the statement, its definately worth it
