Hey guys, who's looking at doing an Arts course next year?
Which university? What subjects?
For anyone already doing Arts, any particular subjects you can recommend?
I put Arts at University of Melbourne as my first preference..
I know most on this site are more geared towards mathematics and science, but I'm hoping there's still a few amongst you..
-
YAY ARTS STUDENT
I'm doing arts :) but I can't really recommend any subjects since I go to Monash lol
I'm just here to express my excitement at finding another arts person!!!!!!
-
i have arts at melb first preference too!
i think i'll major in psych and spanish but the new model still confuses me a bit..
and i'll be away for the explanation days as well!!
that's gonna be difficult.
-
I have been completely driven away from the Melbourne Model - I wouldn't do arts there basically. It is alright if you are musical or want to do pysch - but for us straight humanities kids- it seems a waste. Plus lots of staff are being culled from the arts faculty and subject cuts. (Hence stability of arts faculty at the moment seems questionable)
Hence I would prefer to stay away from Melbourne for those reasons.
And if I do stay at Melbourne: Monash > Melbourne
But I intend to study arts or arts/law at ANU
ARTS all the way though :)
-
yay! so glad to know there actually are people who want to do arts! i've got UoM as my first preference...history and english are looking good (as long as you don't think about all the awesome subjects that have been cut out)
-
Burger and fries please.
-
Yes, ARTS! I intend to do Commerce/Arts at Monash and major in Sociology. I'm so excited :)
-
Yeah I chose Melbourne over Monash purely because I went to both open days and liked the Melbourne campus a lot better, both aesthetically and from the students I spoke to. People are saying the clearly-in ENTER for arts at melbourne is going to go up. Was around 85 this year, 90.5 in 2007 and 92.5 in 2006... I think. Any ideas of what this year'll be?
-
Wtf it dropped 5.5 points in a single year? I was under the impression ENTER scores only fluctuated slightly from previous years. The Melbourne Model would have played its part in that but still... A big jump.
-
"For 2007, Arts made an additional 355 offers with a CIR of 90.9 (92.5 in 2006) and Commerce an additional 154 offers with a CIR of 95.05 (95.85 in 2006)"- That's from an article on the UoM website. And for sure last year it was 85. So yeah, not quite sure what to expect...
-
i was reading some melbourne guide and it said that the maximum enter for arts was gonna be 85 this year..
i dont know how they know that but it's what the brochure said!!
model is good for majoring in psych, not much else!
and melbourne is just so pretty!!
-
I'm doing Arts! But hopefully in a double degree with a Dip Ed.
I want to major in History and Psych hopefully, and do a minor in German or something.
Yay!
-
Burger and fries please.
:D
-

Really? I wouldn't of thought they couldn't just stipulate like that, as student numbers, quality of students etc needed to be taken into account.
During one of my daily extended procrastination sessions, I began looking at the 2009 handbook on the Melb Uni site, trying to find all the subjects I like. I seriously have no clue what to major in- I just want to do an array of courses really, not set ones in a certain discipline like psychology or european studies or whatevs. Didn't seem like any of the fields of study had enough cool courses to justify majoring in

yeah i read it a couple of times to make sure because it didn't seem as though they should be able to make such a call..
but brochures dont lie!!
ahh procrastination sessions, anything to avoid freaking study!!
one more exam to go and then i can not feel guilty about procrastinating!!
hurrah.
-
Yay! I'm going to do a Arts/Teaching (Secondary) double at ACU with a double major in history and literature.... :D
-
Out of curiosity, what careers do BA graduates obtain?
I seriously do not know. I know English teaching is one?
-
Journalism, historian, curator, etc etc. It's a very broad course.
-
i'm just using it to get to postgrad stage..
-
BA can lead to a lot of places. But you need to have some idea of what you want to do with it, possibly do some postgrad stuff, otherwise it has the potential to be worthless.
Disclaimer: I think some arts subjects sound pretty awesome.
-
I've got Arts at UoM as first preference, and Arts at Monash as second. For my interests, they're very similar courses and I'd be happy with both, I'd just prefer Melbourne because it's more convenient for me to travel to. I want to major in Philosophy and do a diploma of French.
-
You can do French as part of your arts degree ...
-
You can do French as part of your arts degree ...
is there a difference? i'm not sure
-
I think a diploma is the equivalent of a major in French ... so I suppose if you didn't have enough spaces in your arts degree or you wanted to major in something else you could do a diploma alongside it ... I'm not sure if that's allowed though
-
You can do a diploma of modern languages alongside another degree at some universities (Melbourne, for instance), but it takes a little longer to do both degrees.
-

Yeah, I'm planning to major in Philosophy, and with the Melbourne Model which required you to take 'breadth subjects', I'll do the diploma of languages instead of choosing subjects from a different discipline.
-
^ wait...are you saying that you can do a diploma instead of breadth?
-
^ wait...are you saying that you can do a diploma instead of breadth?
That's what I was told at the open day. So I hope that's correct!
-
Yeah you can. I am.
-
Excellent, in that case, my plan for next year can still come to fruition. I was concerned for a minute there.
-
1st pref BA at ANU.
I want to major in Archaeology and Biological Anthropology.
-
Yeah you can. I am.
you're doing science though. I'm not sure whether an Arts person can do an Arts subject in a diploma for breadth. Better find out from the uni, Butler.
-
ive got arts melbourne as my second preference at the moment, but i think i will change it to first preference after ENTER results come out.
i keep switching psychology (honours) @ monash and arts @ melbourne (psych) back and forth; cant decide!
-
Yeah you can. I am.
you're doing science though. I'm not sure whether an Arts person can do an Arts subject in a diploma for breadth. Better find out from the uni, Butler.
At the open day I was told by a woman the languages faculty that a diploma of languages can count as the breadth element of an Arts degree. Now that doubt has been cast, I plan on checking again, but she seemed quite confident in telling me that.

Nah, she would know better than me. Good for you, circumventing breadth :)
btw do you go to that school in Sunbury that you can see from the train line?
-
really hope you guys are right re:diploma instead of breadth! if so, makes me even happier to be applying to UoM!

There are two high schools, one on either side of the train line. I go to the one on the right as you're heading towards the city. Are you from around the area?
-
UoM is one of the only Arts degrees that offers Archaeology so i think it will be my first preference. I am altering mine in a few weeks time, when the 'Change of Preferences' is open.
-

I did yrs 6-10 +12 in Bendigo. I recall the school on the left as being really pretty, not sure I've seen yours

Ah, ok. The school on the left is the Catholic private school, and I go to the public school next door. Next time you're passing by, look out for a breeding ground of portables, and you'll have found my school.
-
has anyone checked the UoM website? cos that has course plans, and NOWHERE does it say that you can take a diploma instead of breadth, you have to do both.
-
Arts would be an awesome course to do.
If I don't get into Medicine initially, I'd probably do an Arts/Science degree, and major in History or Politics and Spanish :)
-

yeah, i'm now kinda doubting you can if you're doing arts. if you want to do a language you need to major in in, pretty much. Breadth sucks :(
-
I don't completely understand Breadth. Does anyone want to explain it to me in as little compexity as possible?
:)
-
Basically you MUST do one subject each semester outside your faculty. Thats all! :)
Its supposed to make graduates more diverse and open minded, at least thats the plan
-
I've been looking into it and the options don't seem that open - Would i be able to do, say, History and Psych as majors, and then History as a breadth? Or does it have to be something totally unrelated and gay, like Music or Science? I don't particulary like this Breath component, but the campus is so damn sexy that it's still my 1st preference lol.

The breadth subject is supposed to be in a different field of study, so if you want to do Arts, History would def be out.
Check out the list of possible options for Arts students, you might find something to suit.

I'm not quite sure about Psych, or doing a diploma in languages or creative writng [which are both offered within arts.] Watch this space, or find out yourself.

yep, unrelated and gay is the general idea. psych isn't available for arts/science students.

I'm doing Arts at ANU. It's the best degree ever.
If only I got the ENTER I would have definitely joined you! :(

Yeah she does PhB Arts. I'm guessing she's busy doing her ASC (Advanced Studies Course) right now though because they're due tomorrow for PhB Arts kids - I imagine my neighbour (who also does PhB Arts) will be pulling an all nighter to finish it, she has to write 4000 words.
I finished mine for maths today. 8500 words/27 pages! :o

but what does ASC entail, briefly?
-
Depends on what area you do it in. My neighbour does history, so she basically does a lot of research on a certain area and then writes a massive fuckoff essay on it (usually in an area that she wouldn't otherwise do as an undergrad, or where she wouldn't have gone into nearly as much depth). Other areas of Arts would be pretty similar for the most part.
For science, it varies greatly. For bio/chem/phys you might set up an experiment that'd take 8-10 weeks to do then write a lab report on it. For maths, you usually just research an area that you wouldn't have done otherwise and write a report. My 27 page report was on "Resolving the Banach-Tarski Paradox" (have a look on Wikipedia for what this is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banach-Tarski_Paradox). So basically I describe the various mathematical ways to try to make sense of what is a very illogical result. Quite interesting stuff, in my opinion. Which is why I wrote 27 pages on it, I suppose.

Kewl. Be nice to be able to choose your topic

I checked, and you're right, I can't do a diploma of languages as my breadth component. Ugh, I'm annoyed now, I had everything planned out. Now I'm not sure what I'm doing.
-
mm I don't mind the breadth component so much, I'm pretty interested in economics so doing some economics/finance subjects should be good. Just want stupid VCE to be overrrr.
At this stage philosophy and european studies look like the two disciplines I'd be most likely to major in. What's vce philosophy like Butler?

Excellent choice. The commerce faculty has developed a program specifically for your needs. http://www.ba.unimelb.edu.au/ugrad/fields/Economics.html

I had to write 3000 words (I did a 2000 word essay earlier on). It's called 'Constitution in Death: The Process of Public Mourning'.

VCE philosophy involves reading excerpts from texts, both ancient and modern, and trying to decipher what the hell they're talking about (It becomes easier). Unit 3 was based on The Good Life, so essentially morality, and we read Plato, Aristotle, Murdoch and Nietzsche. Unit 4 was Science, Knowledge and the Mind, which was divided into two subtopics. The first was the Mind/Body Problem, which is whether the mind is a physical part of the body or not. The second subtopic was whether science can give us knowledge. It has been, by far, the best subject I chose this year. I highly recommend it, and plan on majoring in it with my BA.

I guess it was because I read somewhere that you needed 99 or something to do that particular course that Eriny is doing, and thought it would be cool to do it because it sounds interesting, but I would never get the ENTER for it. :P I hope this makes more sense. :)
-
I'd like to do ARTS and major in Japanese, with a minor/elective in any or in psychology, sociology or philosophy.
I like to know the reasons why the world is what it is.

But you can do Arts at Anu for 75, which in itself seems a decent option [the question of moving aside]. And then you might be able to transfer to PhB, though you'd need, what, HD minimum? But even *if* you do disappointingly at VCE, doesn't mean you're not intelligent or preclude you from success at uni :)
-
Yeah. At the last PhB gathering thing, I met one person who enrolled in a regular BA, did really well and then was actually approached about enrolling in the PhB. Your ENTER won't stop you from doing what you like.

I don't think I've applied on time, though. The applications are possibly closed, and if not, I don't want to pay a $100 late fee :P. How hard is it to transfer to Canberra from a University in Melbourne?

ANU is ranked higher than Monash or UoM. So it's pretty easy to transfer...

Im currently studying Arts at VIC. UNI- footscray!! its cool..
Im majoring in Japanese and performance, and I want to become a Secondary teacher...
Last week, the uni informed us that in order to complete my japanese major.. Ill have to transfer to Melb. uni but still do performance major at VU...
does anyone know what grades i need to fully transfer to a different uni??
so that i can study both Performance and Japanese at the same university??
any suggestions?
