Title: VN Redesign
Post by: ell on November 19, 2008, 09:47:27 pm
I saw doboman's thread so I figured I might have a go at a new design for the site. (ignore the dummy text I used :P)

It looks nice and simple - more informative than the current one.
I'm not sure if the latest posts is needed, though.
Just my opinions. (No, I can't design any better.)

thats awesome. the green top bar leaves lots of room for enwiabe to pollute the site with ads ;)

oooh! very snazzy!
maybe enwiabe could hire you instead of a professional designer, it'd be cheaper and still look awesome :D

It looks more modern.

That means the forum design has to change to match the frontpage.

Don't think the forum needs a new skin [it looks fine as is], but the front page definitely needs work to be done on.

ell, pm me your email and I shall send you the current logos [or you can redesign something simpler and smarter =] ]

GOOD FUCKEN WORK ELL!!! Are u pro?
Title: Re: VN Redesign
Post by: doboman on February 12, 2009, 11:07:08 pm
I don't like it.

And before i receive a tirade of abuse, i'd just like to justify as to why i have come to this conclusion. The website front page should cater for its intended audience (which is year 12s -give and take 3 years). Although the design is great, and kudos to ell for the excellent work, its blockyness is a worrying part. The design looks too 'professional' - the charcoal colour just accentuates it professionalism and i don't know if that's a good thing to be honest if that makes sense. It looks like something a Lawyer or a CA would use- not something that is 'hippity-hop' for 18 year olds. I don't know, that's just my opinion, and i have no doubt that it would be out-weighted- but yeah.
If a funky looking page can't be whipped up, then, what i think, and this is what most forums have, is that www.vcenotes.com should just be redirected to the forum (where the popup comes to say" become a member now") rather than having a pre-word out as your opening page.

Again, ell its a great job, but in my opinion, it doesn't fit.

I'll have to agree with doboman ... it looks absolutely fantastic, just unfortunately not really suited to its audience. I still like the first one better, it's funkier and brighter

I had a quelm with the blue too but I thought Id let it go.

I think that a lot of dobomans worries with the latest offering could be solved by simply changing the colour. Maybe the green from the previous design would be best.

I'd also love to see a smiling hot chick on the front of the website making VCE look fun:) (instead of the book thingo)

ROFLLLL OMG HAHA THEY ARE SO FUNNY

"Results of a recent poll of select VCE students, VCEonline has been ranked the number one website for study resources"

However their website looks swanky as!!!

The site is empty (has no notes in any of the subjects)... and it's a mere cookie-cutter website from a joomla template:

A cursory glance of the signup form requires you to hand over your home address and mobile phone number (HMMM I WONDER WHAT THAT WILL BE USED FOR)

Furthermore, that site is from the same person who posted here saying VCEOnline will quote "never be a threat"

http://vcenotes.com/forum/index.php/topic,4312.30.html

A quick google yields this:
http://209.85.173.132/search?q=cache:XiA4LG7b_x4J:www.stpaulswgl.vic.edu.au/grammarian/2008/101008.pdf+vceonline&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=4&gl=au

He essentially promised that site to his principal for St. Paul's exclusive use, then double-crossed them the second he got the chance. Lol.

hahaha, that guy :P
Well, it seems he has as much proper contents as our viki does, good luck to him. We just need to be one step ahead. =D

I say, as part of the redesign, we should rewrite the front page quoting some statistics, testimonials and results. They speak more than any fancy persuasive text =]
Title: Re: VN Redesign

Lol awww :(

Still looks swanky though even if he did rip it off someone else
Title: Re: VN Redesign

We have statistics + results on the front page :P. I think testimonials are tacky as hell though.
Title: Re: VN Redesign
Post by: costargh on February 13, 2009, 12:07:14 am
I think the letter at the front of the page is a tad too long. Like it doesnt really accentuate the pros of the site in a user friendly way.

Haha, if I had more time, I'd volunteer to redesign the entire thing. Unfortunately, time = $ for me these days...

One REALLY wonders at the intentions of someone who's attempting to datamine mobile phone numbers and home addresses...

Thanks for the comments guys, I can definitely understand where you're coming from. I figured I'd post up another mockup to see what you all thought about it.

Any element can be easily changed (colour, position, font etc) so yeah feel free to critique anything. I went with the blue + orange simply because that's what our logo uses.

Re funky: I'll see what I can do. :)

Ell, thank you muchly for this work, but changing the design will involve messing with the code, something I don't quite have time for at the moment. And no offense to you ell, I'm sure you're very trustworthy, but nobody but me knows the server password and i'd like to keep it that way after what happened last time.

Thanks for your efforts anyway, however.

It's cool, I design websites for the fun of it anyway. I think you really should consider redesigning that front page though.

Ell, believe me, I'm considering it. :P I think the VN bank account will have enough money to get a professional design done by the end of this year, for the start of VCE 2010 (I'm talking COMPLETE OVERHAUL, I.E. new PHP engines, new layout etc. just rebuilt from scratch).
