Selective Schools Admissions Tests / JMSS 2023 Entry Experience
« Last post by hiimanessa on July 19, 2022, 12:11:59 am »
Hello everyone! The 2023 year 11 entry for JMSS has ended not long ago, which I participated in, and I hope to share useful information with anyone wanting to apply in the future :)

SOME BACKGROUND INFORMATION
I applied for year 10 entry last year, but failed the interview, and last year's test was held all online. This year's was held in person. I don't remember much about the year 10 entry one, so I'll elaborate mainly on the year 11 entry one.
All tests are 30 minutes long, but number of questions vary.

SCIENCE REASONING
30 questions. This test is mainly about common sense, and majority of questions are biology and environmental related.
Some example questions include:
- lots of graph readings
- solving puzzles(?) like "three planes (blue, yellow, green, red) must land at 4 different gates’ and then it asked you to pick a multiple choice on where they were allowed to land with then given clues (red must be between green and blue, blue can only be in gate 1 or 4, etc.)"
- rock cycles

NUMERICAL REASONING
30 questions. This test is also mainly common sense and thinking, but math. Lots of questions are identifying patterns, in the format of a sentence or a table.

MATHEMATICS
60 questions. Don't worry about not answering all the questions, I only answered about 35 of them. This has all questions about stuff we learnt from year 7 to 10, such as linear graphs, algebra, probability, geometry etc.

ESSAY
30 minutes to write a short essay. They will provide you with 2 prompts, both science related, and write anything about it. The two prompts I got this year was "Frogs has 3 methods of breathing, discuss" and "Why is noble gases used in lightbulbs" something like that. I recommend not writing more than 2 pages for this. The more you write, the easier for you to make mistakes. I only wrote 3/5 of a page, and with no particular format. Just make sure to not over-repeat yourself and use logic and common sense.

INTERVIEW
Hurray! You passed the tests and made it to the interview! For the interview you are asked to bring in a CV and your mid-year report, all printed out and placed in a single plastic sheet protector. The ones that are used to keep loose leaf papers in binders. Yeah, those. Anything else or more than one sheet protector won't be accepted. The CV is basically a resumé, have it written in the format of a resumé and write ONLY what they asked you to write. DO NOT write anything extra like work experience or hobbies and skills, don't. I emphasise, do not. Include any extracurricular activities, leadership roles and science involvement in it. Anything you've done in the recent years. If you don't have anything in the recent years, the trick I used is to not include the year.
Onto the actual interview part. When you first entered, you will be asked to fill out a pre-interview survey. It includes questions like "What subjects are you planning/have already chose to do in the future?" "What's a highlight in your high school years?" "What kind of environment do you work best in?" etc. I'm not sure if this influences the selection process. After you finish the survey, a teacher will call you in to the shared room with the other interviewees. They sit you down and explain how things will work. On the table in front of you will be a piece of paper with the actual questions that they'll ask you. The questions I got are
- What do you like the best about your current school?
- Why do you want to enrol in JMSS?
- Chose a modern technology item, engineering item etc that made an advancement in the last 50 years. How has it made an impact on the world?
- If you do know, explain how your chosen item works.
- What are your hobbies? What does your typical weekend look like?
- What career are you considering in the future? What subjects do you have to choose in order to achieve it?
- Show us what you're proud of in your report and what needs to be worked on.
They may be asking extra questions like any other interviewer but don't be scared and just answer based on your guts.

That's it! I don't think this is gonna be very helpful so feel free to ask any questions in the comments!

Ahhh, thank you so much! I really appreciate you taking the time to reply. This really helps to clear things up for Literature. I didn't realise that you could use the same analytical tools all the way through for Literature - it sounds much better than mainstream!

Thank you for this reply - I wish you lots of luck & good vibes for your exam! I know you will do great :)

The VCE Journey Journal / Re: Sreeni's VCE journal!
« Last post by Sreeeni on July 18, 2022, 10:10:05 pm »
im thinking of doing commerce, after doing the ucat, im think i should change courses lmaoo.
here are my scores so far:
spec: 55.5/60 average was like 80 percent tho
english: 24/30 i think im proud of this one it was top 23 out of 230 something students
methods: 43/50 rip i thought i would do better. but i feel like this allows me to brush up on everything, i can do so much better like, decimal place stuff, showing enough working out for show questions
psych: 46/50 i think im ok with this one too and the average was like 36/50
chem: rippppppp. 69% not even joking nice. idk what happened. i want to meet with my teacher from now on. i really want to get my answers perfect for everything. my extended response questions and small deatils are so lacking

how im feeling:

i feel like after the ucat i feel so burnt out, i feel like my life has come to a halt. i just use these logs to express what im feeling. i didnt even do well on the ucat. commerce seems so interesting. i think ill go with that. im not going to give up. i need to dig deep. 2 months to go for the exam.
for specialist: i need to proof read more, intensely.
for methods: like i said dp showing enough working out. need to work on that
for english: i need to make my evidence more precise, efficient, cut down on it. thats how i get to the higher ranks.

VCE English Language / Re: VCE English Language Question Thread

Ahhh this helps so much! Thank you for taking the time to reply - I really appreciate it. Those pages you linked are really helpful, I'll definitely be using those for the next few years!!

I think after doing my research into each English stream I'm definitely leaning more towards English Language, it just seems way more interesting and as much as I love reading books and analysing the hell out of them, I think Eng Lang. will be a nice change (And I much prefer analysing over creatives any day!)

P.S. I have got a VCE journal on my page if you'd like to have a look :)

VCE Extended Investigation / EXI Survey
« Last post by gingerts on July 18, 2022, 05:27:29 pm »
Hello hello! I would be really appreciative if any current year 11/12s could spare some time to complete my survey! It shouldn't take any longer than 10 minutes, likely less. It relates to Autism/ADHD and gender within school -- further information/FAQ attached with the survey! (To be clear, as some people have asked, absolutely anyone can take it as long as they're currently in year 11/12)

Thanks so much :D

VIC Year 9 Discussion / Year 9 electives
« Last post by Dr. Peaches on July 18, 2022, 05:10:13 pm »
So... I'm currently in the stage of my education which I have some sort of control/independence over. With submissions closing early next month, I'm eager to start next year already, but I'm in seek of some advice.

I'm already keen on what I want to do after school, and in the next coming years also. But the trouble is I don't know what electives will benefit me crucially. Right now I'm in a dilemma with my last subject of choice. Currently, I have selected: ext. math, competitive sport, Physics, Food, and German.

But for you to get a better understanding of which subject you shall suggest I would have to tell you a bit about myself. I'm currently in year 8, I am a bit of a fitness fanatic as I tear up on the hockey turf and the boxing ring, to have fun and make memories with all my mates is important; I read a lot of poetry, cooking has to be my passion, I love exploring my surroundings, and anything to do by the water I cater to, and my idol is myself as anything that others find different I start to adore. Different is better than good, it's great.  later on, in my schooling journey, I would have to be destined to do system engineering, as I aspire to do electrical engineering/sparky as a career possibility. I'm quite the academic achiever with 32/40 (70-100%) at least on every test on every subject, my strengths rely on anything but English not to say I don't excel by standards, I'm heavily influenced by mathematics creating myself a problematic thinker, which explained my results from the end of last year placing top 15% out of year 10 students in maths (as a year 7 student without vehab program because I talk too much and we didn't have ext.)

u]All the electives are a semester each but Lote (language) and we have 6 semesters worth of electives (5 electives if you count lote), I would still have humanities and science general (English and math also) has a core but  :[/u]
Maths
9 EXTENSION MATHS
Elective 1
[9 COMPETITIVE SPORTS
Elective 2
9 PHYSICS
Elective 3
9 WIDE WORLD OF FOOD
Elective 4
---------------
Elective 5
9 GERMAN

Reserves:
Reserve 1
9 ENTERPRISING PEOPLE
Reserve 2
9 INTRO TO PYSCHOLOGY
Reserve 3
9 HEALTH & PERSONAL FITNESS
Reserve 4
9 MASTERING MULTIMEDIA

I have 1 elective left and I was thinking about whether I should do: Enterprising people (busman), psych, Visual Comm (architecture), or Chem. Make sure to leave your opinions broad and don't worry I will take everything as critical feedback :)

This is my first post and I'm kinda new to this stuff, I'm currently in Year 9 and considering taking accelerated math (methods) for Year 10, I average around ~94-100% on my tests for maths consistently and started learning methods content roughly 2 months ago such as Calculus, Hyperbolic functions and Advanced probability. I've learnt Factoring Trinomials and Polynomials, Parabolas & Non-linear, Trigonometry, Trig functions, Complex numbers, Vectors, Limits, Statistics and Matrices prior to learning calculus. I don't have a tutor and find self-studying the most effective way for me to understand topics. I'm a fairly quick learner and I have a strong interest in learning new topics in mathematics, always enjoyed attempting challenging content above my level and I'm rarely busy outside of school. If I score well on methods to be eligible for specialist maths, Should I take it? can I take it later or do I have to take it in Year 10? Also, what's the difference between Units 1/2 & Units 3/4? Thanks. :)
I largely agree with the other commenter. Also, you are allowed take both subjects normally (that is, doing it year 11/12 which is the normal path, in fact not many schools even allow people to take methods early). In this instance I would say that taking methods early is a good idea, and as the other guy said, do spesh 1/2 in year 11 (reason being, VCE is also about strategy and study skills - it's quite a bit different to year 9 or 10. The early subject you take will prepare you well in this regard).

Personally, I took Physics early as my school didn't allow methods to be taken early, and honestly it's fine. If you can I really do suggest looking into the university extension maths (UMEP for unimelb, or MUEP for monash) which I believe can only be taken in year 12. I regret not doing this since the content in methods and spesh was not exactly new to me and was not as stimulating, also if you do this you can skip the first year maths subjects at University of melbourne (of course only relevant if you wish to go to this university).

I was in pretty much the same position as you described in year 9 with self studying, and yeah absolutely do specialist maths it's not even a question haha. Also you should have no issue at all with accelerating methods.
