Subject selection for Year 12

So it's subject selection time for year 11s. Was wondering if its better to do 7 subjects; having completed two in year 11. Or doing 6 subjects and a University subject? Contemplating doing 7 in case I screw one this year and choosing more subjects which play to my strengths next year could be better.

'Screwing up' one subject is already taken into account for by the bottom 2. The difference between a 30 and a 40 ends up being 1 aggregate point. It's really not going to change much. Ideally I would recommend just doing 4 subjects this year, but if that's not possible as is the case in many schools, a university subject is probably better for you overall, unless the travel time and such interferes with your other subjects too much.

Depends on your aim tbh.

1 subject point is not much if your aiming from 0-99.8 but as seen by a classic member of VN all he needed was like 0.02 points to get a guaranteed med spot (ie - leap from 99.85 --> 99.9)

1 point could mean a lot at the upper end.

Well the part I forgot to add to that is that a university subject is going to be giving him more points regardless. Potential of 5.5 as opposed to whatever else he would probably get in his bottom 2. So getting more points in the bottom 2 isn't justification to choose a VCE subject really. The issue is whether balancing a uni subject in VCE may screw over his top 4 subjects, which is something I've never done and hence will leave to the others to comment on.

careful with uni subjects, pretty sure next year there is no "agreggate" only average of your top 4 , which means the OP 5.5 increment does not occur

Was just about to post the above when I saw this. Hmm. Maybe an extra subject is easier then unless he wants to do the uni subject purely out of interest or experience.

i think just do four subjects in year 12 if you have done 2 in year 11 already.
It lowers down the work load alot and you get to spend more time on subjects like English
Also it is less stressful :)

It depends on the uni subject. If you have a very strong background in that level of coursework, you'll probably find that it's easy to do well in (or to pass, whatever you need to do). Personally, I didn't work very hard for UMEP physics, but I'd already covered all of the material, and therefore the only drain on my time was attending classes. I enjoyed the subject as well and I did score 5.5, so it was worth it. If you're doing a uni subject which directly backs up a VCE subject (the only examples I can think of are LOTEs) it  might be a good idea because it'll get you performing at a higher level in your VCE subject.

I should have elaborated a bit more. Well the subjects I was planning on doing next year were Spesh, Physics, Italian and English. And the extra subject was going to be Lit because English is probably the subject I most enjoy and am good at. I'm currently doing methods and bio.

Our school expects us to do a University Subject if we've already completed two 3/4s in year 11. But the benefit is that we can be taught University Maths at school, so there's no problem with travel and whatnot. The dilemma is whether I drop spesh, which I don't want to, and do Uni math, do the initial five, or go off a tangent and do five subjects and uni one.

What would be the most beneficial regarding the ATAR score? And yeah like Bazza said I heard that its no longer 5.5. Any guidance would be helpful :D
