Should I get my Statement of Marks?
« on: August 15, 2011, 05:23:30 pm »
Is there any point in getting your statement of marks? Not like it'll change anything. Like even if you know your exact mark, it's not going to stop you from trying is it? Or maybe it'll crush your dreams of getting 50 if you didn't get that high A+ you wanted? I don't really mind paying for it, just kind of cbf posting the form. Just wondering if I should get it now...

It's up to you completely, and where you think you scored.

For me personally, I knew I was pretty close to the 50 mark for Chem, so I couldn't help it but to know if I was still in contention or not. It's pretty hard though, I mean if I were outside that range I'd be pissed and would probably have a hatred towards chem for a few weeks after, but now that I know it's still possible it's definitely spurred it on!

yeah for bio this year i needed to get a SoM, or else i would literally have gone crazy. Lost all motivation (temporarily) to work for bio after midyears for no real reason. But if my SoM was good (which it turned out to be) it would spur me on in an attempted 50. If it wasn't, i wouldn't work as hard and focus more on 1/2's and put Bio in bottom 2.

I guess it depends what your aims are, and if the SoM wiil affect (positively) your study etc.

Well yeh, in some cases it doesn't change anything so there's not much point. However, there are circumstances where it can. The circumstance where I used it was at the high end where I had an A+, but wanted to know whether it was high or low. Reason for this is to know whether or not to try in that subject in unit 4, or to throw it away and just chuck it in my bottom 2 and focus on another subject instead. Given that the difference between a low and a high A+ can be from about 38 to a 50 study score, this is worthwhile for those at the high end of the scale who are trying to sort out their VCE game plan. Other reasons for wanting a SoM could be motivation as you might see that your efforts in unit 3 did actually pay off, or you might study harder in unit 4 to not 'waste' your high mid-year mark. Another reason is just pure curiosity. I'm still curious to this day as to what my actual English marks were.
