Questions: VCAA 2010 Sample/Use of Infinity in Probability

Hello,

I'm looking at question 7 of the 2010 VCAA Exam 1 Sample Paper.  Would anyone here be able to explain how it is done without the calculator?  I've looked at the iTute solution, but I don't quite understand the process of how they reached it.  Any ideas?

Also, another question relating to the integration of a continuous probability function to find the probability, how should a terminal of infinity be treated without a calculator?

If anyone could help out, it would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

Use the steady state matrix formula?



Multiply through and find x? :S

EDIT: I THINK that's the formula... I've only ever seen it once in a methods exam 1.

Also T = the transition matrix

You only need to multiply the first value in the top left value in the Transition matrix by x and solve... am I too confusing?

Nah yuore right :)
your answer/equation would be a*x + b*(1-x) = x
solve for x and that is your steady state probability
