Can't speak for any of them but I'm assuming you know both law and med are post grad only at melb right?

I understand that the Commerce course at Melbourne is recognised even interntionally, it's a very reputable course, and thus i would say with relative ease that Melbourne > Monash in terms of commerce.

In the same way, the Post Graduate Medicine course at Melbourne is ranked 15th in the world, ahead of many top, quality Universities in England and America.
ATAR: 99.90 (2011)
Currently studying Medicine at Monash

Currently in-taking students for 2015 in Mathematical Methods, Chemistry, and English in the SE suburbs (Glen Waverley area)

Yeah no doubles either, so monash probably offers more diversity. I do know that monash commerce has different compulsory subjects though, which you may or may not like. In monash you must do the basic subjects of accounting+finance, microeconomics, business law, stats (kinda like maths), management, marketing (totaling 6 subjects) in first year. I personally would find this rather annoying.

For melbourne, you have to do, in first year: intro microeconomics, intro macroeconomics, quantitative methods (which is stats) (only 3 subjects) but in second year, you need to do another stats subject, as well as organisational behaviour (which I think is like a management subject). So altogether 5, but you don't have to do marketing/accounting etc if you never intended to major in them.

Also, in terms of respect between the two med degrees, I'd say it doesn't matter because you are guaranteed an internship anyway and after that, it's all about you and your skill, not your degree.

For Commerce undergraduate studies, quite similar between melb and monash, both are highly reputable courses in either unis, however if you intend on further studies, masters/honours, melb is better than monash in terms of what they offer and reputation, but yeah for undergraduate it really doesn't matter :)

This is a really pointless discussion, they're both equally good and I think you'll be fine with a degree from either institution

Agreed with the second part, but I think it's misleading to say that degrees from any two universities are "equally good".  From what I hear, Melbourne Commerce undergraduate teaching is of a marginally higher quality - not enough to make Monash a non-choice (ie. you can do well with a Monash degree), but enough to suggest that there is a difference between the two.

PS: Get back on topic people.

I'd probably choose Melbourne for all three.
Commerce because of what EZ says.
But law and med because I believe it would be beneficial to have a diverse undergraduate education before honing in on a more vocationally oriented degree.  I appreciate learning about science in general before I will apply to the Melbourne MD, and I would feel the same way if I was aiming to get in to Law.  As for why you would choose Melbourne for postgrad...if given the choice, why wouldn't you choose Melbourne?  The gumtrees at Monash just don't impress-a me much-a.

I just really like studying.

Why the hell do people care about teaching quality when they don't rock up to lectures regardless.

Go to Monash or Melbourne, your degree alone will get you into a boring job for the rest of your life, what you make of it with your marks, ability to speak, and achievements outside of academia will play a massive role in distinguishing you from others.

Where I work, the majority of people in management have a stock standard business/commerce degree from Deakin/Monash/Melb/Swinburne, but they're all earning in excess of 100K. The way they are able to communicate, their knowledge in field (not what is taught in a Uni Degree), and the way they present themselves is amazing. It's definitely not their Uni degree which got them there.

On the other hand I can guarantee you that a crapload of graduates from better/equivalent universities end up stuck in boring desk jobs for ages  because they didn't do a whole lot to set themselves apart.

If you wan't your uni degree to get you places rather than your other abilities, you'll have to get admitted somewhere overseas.

That said, different universities provide different opportunities in extra-curricular involvement.  Also, some universities will have programs which WILL set you apart from others within Australia (eg. Melbourne's JD Law degree has a double degree option with Oxford/NYU - certainly an incentive to go there for a JD over Monash or Sydney).  The essence of your post is correct, but just be wary of entirely dismissing the significance of Australian universities differing.
