The essentials if you want to progress to the MD are;
1st Year:
1st Semester: Biology of Cells and Organisms | Chemistry 1 | Science Elective | Breadth
2nd Semester: Genetics and the Evolution of Life | Chemistry 2 | Science Elective | Breadth

The above are the prereqs for the *actual* med prereqs, which you must complete in 2nd year. They are;
Anatomy: ANAT20006 Principles of Human Structure
Biochemistry: BCMB20002 Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
Physiology: PHYS20008 Human Physiology

As for major, as long as you have those subjects, it's really up to you! :)

Hope that helps!

Would Biochemistry an Molecular Biology be okay as  major? Also can you recommend me major that you think whould be best for MD? What Major are you doing?

I have a list of majors I'm interested in, but I'm probably going to try and do Physics or Chemistry. Honestly just do what interests you the most, but relevant majors for the MD are pretty much any of the life sciences ones, especially stuff like Physiology or Pathology, or Human Structure and Function. Biochemistry and Molecular Biology would be great as well. Also, Neuroscience, Genetics, Pharmacology and Microbiology, Infection and Immunology.

As you can see there is a very wide selection of majors 'relevant' to the MD! :)

Hey Aurelian,

If one were to keep their options open for MD, Dental surgery, Optometry, would the above subjects that you've mentioned allow you to do so. And what breadth subjects would a science student wanting to become a JD do?

Don't choose a major because you think it will help you with the MD

I believe the DDS prereqs are the exact same as the MD. Optometry is a little bit different; as far as I can tell all the above subjects will suffice, but in addition you'll need Physics 1 (for the optics component, I presume).

Source: http://www.optometry.unimelb.edu.au/courses/OD.html

"Grade point average in an undergraduate degree which includes a tertiary subject (at any level) in Physics or Optics, plus three 2nd or 3rd year subjects: one in Anatomy or Cell Biology; and two in any of the Molecular, Cellular or Physiological sciences."

As for the JD, there are no prerequisites, so don't worry about that when choosing breadths.

Does anyone know what subjects you must do to get to postgraduate study for optometry, i can't seem to find the subjects specifically for first year.
2012-2014. BSc: Neuroscience. University of Melbourne.
2015-2018. Doctor of Optometry. University of Melbourne.

Unlikely to respond to any PMs these days.

If I were you, I'd think Biochem would be a good major to do because it would give you a broad understanding in a few scientific areas related to biomedical sciences.  You could take some electives in Physiology and Anatomy because you might be interested in those (assuming that's kind of why you're looking towards an MD) but still make sure you have a useful major and a broad background in case your MD plans fall through or change.

You should look for something which interests you, basically, but that also opens as many pathways as possible.  But you don't have to pick a major now, so I'd wait a while.  As long as you do Biol and Chem I'd imagine the majors you'd be interested in are covered.

El2012 I know you have to do at least one of Physics: Fundamentals or the first year vision subject...
