Students against VCAA's exam timetable ?
« on: February 19, 2012, 09:40:07 pm »

Hi there :)

Who here is/ or knows any one who is doing  units 3+4 Further Maths, Biology and Psychology in 2012?

If you are/ or know someone who is doing these subjects, you should know that our exam timetble is horrible!

Please just look at it -> http://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/vce/exams/timetable.html

SO... I was thinking of creating a petiton for all Victorian students against this timetable. Keeping in mind that there could be so many others in my situation.

What do you guys think?

Em.

Not sure if that'll get you anywhere. Three exams in a day used to be considered complaint-worthy, but two exams per day for two days which are split by a weekend doesn't seem as bad as you make it out to be.

That's not that bad... I've seen people with 3 exams in a day, or worse: 2 exams at exactly the same time!

Yeah, I agree with Shinny.

It seems as though VCAA seems to try and work out the timetable as to avoid a build up of Exams on a single day, whilst still grouping them together day after day

i.e. Further two days in a row, followed by Methods two days in a row, followed by Specialist two days in a row (not incl. weekends) and Chemistry and Physics grouped day after another, Psychology and biology grouped a day after another. (But they don't put Chemistry and Physics on the same day or Biology and Psychology or any of the Mathematical subjects on the same day due to the large correlation between students doing these subjects)

I would think that they would take into account the percentage of students doing the subjects that are on the same day when compiling the timetable as to "disadvantage" as little students as possible.

Just realised how ambiguous this post comes across, hope people manage to understand what I'm getting at here  :-\

"Back in my day" we had to deal with a Specialist Maths exam the afternoon after a 3 hr english exam.

(Ok, not really "my day", a couple of years before "my day" but you get the point). Some people will be happy that they are getting them out of the way early, while others want them more spread out. At the end of the day there isn't really anything you can do. It just means that you have to utilise swotvac. But as said above by others, there are definitely worse exam timetables out there.

Was going to say the same thing but then I realised how old this made me feel. Then I felt sad. But yeh, that was just about the worst day of my life.

I'd kill myself if I ever had a English and an Specialist exam on the same day, but I guess theres no escape from sacs, I know there will be weeks loaded up with sacs and some sacs can be on the same day.

Otherwise, my body is ready.

I'm doing Bio and Further this year and since they're an hour apart, I plan on doing practice exams one hour apart just to get used to it. Honestly, its been done before (the timetable hasn't changed since last year -I'm not sure about previous years) and it should be very manageable. Don't know why you're complaining about Psych though, you have a two day gap...
So, I suggest you focus your energy on learning the content instead of protesting...

I thought that having to come in on the Monday of the Melbourne Cup weekend to do my Further Maths Exam 2 was bad. I guess I shouldn't be complaining. :P

Wait until you get to uni, and end up having an exam on Melbourne Cup Day.

Apparently Melb. Cup isn't a holiday at Monash Uni? :S LOL!

In response to the complaints on the exam timetable. My opinion is that there's nothing you can do about it. Just get over it and start studying rather than complaining. In the end, there's always going to be someone who's in a worse situation than you and although I didn't have 2 exams on the same day at all during my exam period, I can say, even having 2 would not really hamper my performance in the exam. If you think that endurance is an issue, you can work on your mental fitness as well as techniques to help you recover after an exam.

There's really nothing worse than thinking negatively about things which are out of your control. I know a lot of people who spent a lot of time which I spent relaxing, on facebook and enjoying myself, complaining about how they were marked unfairly on SACs, how this is against them, how that is against them, how they have an exam straight after an exam and they seem to wonder why they never have any free time.

Just use your time wisely, don't bother even thinking about the exam timetable, it's not even that bad. You're not going to change anything by putting your time and effort into petitioning VCAA. Look at the things you can control, such as your mental stamina and recovery after exams, and try to address issues that you can fix, no point chasing after VCAA, waste of time and effort.
