Some ANU questions.
« on: February 11, 2012, 03:35:37 pm »

I am in yr 12 and considering the PhB (science) program at ANU and I was just wondering about a few things:
1) What's the general feel of the campus like?
2) What's the weather like in Canberra?
3) How close is everything on the campus?
4) Are there any interesting places/landmarks nearby? (Any golf courses around??)
5) What are some similarities/differences between the ANU campus and UoM campus? (I say that because I have been to UoM a number of times, but I've never even seen ANU)
6) Do PhB students get financial aid?
7) What are the facilities like, and are the older buildings nice inside? (particularly science/physics)
8) Do ANU offer financial aid for overseas exchange?
9) Is traveling to and from Melbourne costly? What is the best method of transport (train, plane, bus, car)?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

I am in yr 12 and considering the PhB (science) program at ANU and I was just wondering about a few things:
1) What's the general feel of the campus like?
It's nice. Lots of green, the buildings aren't ugly like at Monash and it's no way near as crowded as UoM.

2) What's the weather like in Canberra?
Mild. It can get quite chilly overnight in winter (as in a low of -3 or so on really cold nights), though it's usually not freezing during the day. In the summer, it doesn't get quite as hot as Melbourne, but of course it still gets pretty damn warm.

3) How close is everything on the campus?
It depends on your classes. If you have to walk from the Law building to the Maths building, say, it could take you 10 minutes. Most things are closer than that, and everything's centred around Union Court, where most of the cafes and stuff are.

4) Are there any interesting places/landmarks nearby? (Any golf courses around??)
No near golf courses (probably a good 10 mins drive away, at least). ANU is right in front of Black Mountain, which has Telstra Tower at the top, so there are some pretty amazing views. At the base of Black Mountain are the Botanical Gardens, which are beautiful for a nice walk or picnic in summer, and are less than five mins walk from ANU. The city centre and all that jazz is a 10-15 min walk from uni.

5) What are some similarities/differences between the ANU campus and UoM campus? (I say that because I have been to UoM a number of times, but I've never even seen ANU)
ANU has a LOT more space; it's much less packed. It's much greener, lots of trees and open spaces, a lot more casual. The buildings for the most part aren't ugly, though none are particularly pretty.

6) Do PhB students get financial aid?
Depends. If you get 99.90+, you get around $13,000 a year on a National Undergraduate Scholarship (which is for everyone, not just PhB). A bit lower, and you'll get a PhB scholarship, which are $5,000 a year last I checked. A bit lower, and they run out of scholarships, so you don't get anything. They tell you when you get in if you've gotten a scholarship (I originally got a PhB scholarship, then got bumped up to an NUS a few weeks later).

7) What are the facilities like, and are the older buildings nice inside? (particularly science/physics)
Facilities are mostly excellent. ANU has a Research School of Physics, where a lot of experimental physics research happens, which is great for PhB students doing ASCs (as otherwise you don't really get access there).

8) Do ANU offer financial aid for overseas exchange?
I went on exchange a few years ago for a semester and got a total of $9,500 in scholarships, which was pretty crazy (though $5,000 of that was my NUS scholarship). I think they offer less now, but there's probably still a fair bit of financial aid available.

9) Is traveling to and from Melbourne costly? What is the best method of transport (train, plane, bus, car)?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!
ANU is eight hours drive north-east of Melbourne, and three hours drive south-west of Sydney. It's an hour or so plane trip from Melbourne to Canberra. Planes can cost anything from $50 to $250 each way, though don't expect it that cheap unless you're willing to fly Tiger; Virgin or Qantas will cost you $90-130 or so if you book a few weeks in advance. There is a V-Line service from Melbourne to Canberra: train from Melbourne to Albury, then a connecting bus from Albury to Canberra. It takes a bit under 9 hours and costs about $50 if memory serves. There's also a train from Melbourne to Yass (45 mins outside of Canberra), though I've never taken that.

Thanks Humph!
I think the NUS is $12,500 and the Merit scholarship is $6,500 p.a
The merit scholarship is from 99.50 to 99.85.
If I happen to get between 99.00 and 99.50 and do the PhB program, will there be any financial aid?

Humph is on the ball. However, a more 'realistic' time estimate to go to Melbourne would be 8.5 hours and 3.5 hours for Sydney. The final half hour is for actually pulling up at your destination within the city. The trip to Melbourne can be even longer if you take generous breaks. If you take none it can be done in 7.5 hours although that's not responsible driving.

In response to your follow-up scholarship question, see the first two links of this page: http://www.anu.edu.au/sas/scholarships/undergraduate/index.php

Thanks ben92,
Is there a difference between the Merit scholarship and what humph called the 'PhB scholarship'? I haven't been able to find anything on the website about a PhB scholarship..

Eh, maybe they got rid of it. This was all the way back in 2007...
