I think it is due to the fact that before engineering courses required a lot of physical demands. It was also established around the time when women are seen as more on the domestic field than actually be specialized in a certain field or career.

It was during those times that men dominated and they were the ones that took university courses, especially engineering field because it was then that this course actually flourished so i guess that's why it was seen as courses more for male.
