What's the deal with failed subjects and GPA?

Does anyone know what happens to your GPA if you fail a subject? If you get an N/A for a subject do they still use your scores in that subject for the calculation of your GPA or do they just totally abolish that failed subject?

I can feel this fail coming on with Calculus 1..

Depends on what GPA calculation you use. The general one for applying to most graduate and Honours degrees that use GPA allows you to drop your lowest two subjects from your first 200 credit points of study, therefore your fail could be considered as one of those two subjects and left out. For some faculties, they have their own calculations, e.g. for applications to medicine (through GEMSAS), that fail would count towards your GPA.

Hold on a sec. So if I were to fail Calculus 1 this semester and then repeat it next semester, would they take into account BOTH my calculus grades for the year?

Again, if we're going by the general Melbourne one;

Quote
Where a student has completed a subject twice in the most recent 300 points, the results of both attempts will be included in the calculation of the SGPA unless one of the attempts falls in the 25 points of the earliest 200 points with the lowest marks.

and, also worth taking note of;

Quote
Where the most recent study periods over which either 100 or 300 points have been completed involve subjects with a total credit point value of more than the required number (i.e. more than 100 or 300 points, respectively), subjects should be omitted from the earliest of these study periods in such a way that the remaining subjects yield the required number of points and have the highest possible SGPA.

Keep in mind failed subjects show up on your transcript too.

It doesn't matter whether the 'bottom two' are core or not right?

If you're doing biomed, then core subjects are worth double points, bear that in mind

No, it doesn't matter, but yeah, as Miss Baby Spice said, it's 25 credit points, so not always 2 subjects.

Sigh i've lost quite a bit already due to silly things that have a large effect.
