UNDERSTANDING UMAT TOTAL SCORES

Hi
What does 195 total score mean. Medentry states that this was the cut off for Monash last year. Does this mean the total of your score x 2? Please advise.
Thanks in advance.

195 = the total of all three of your sections. Each section is given a score (NOT out of 100) through some magical ACER algorithms and the total of those three sections is your total score.

eg. if someone got S1: 66, S2: 59, S3: 70, they would get a total of 195 (mid 95%ile based on last year) and would get an interview.

And note that for Monash, there was an ATAR+UMAT interview round after ATARs came out, in which I, JDog and many others I know ended up taking and still managed to scrape in for a place into the course. So don't stress too much about numbers now, just give it your all.

I asked a representative at the careers expo at our school.  She said it was because they didn't get enough good applicants that fell into that category, which is kind of stupid because I'm sure a large number of people were in that situation. I don't have a link though.
There's second round if you get a 99.95 and maybe a 99.90.

fair enough. However i am a bit skeptical because that's a pretty radical change after a single year, i would have expected some notification or announcement or for it to appear online somewhere (which i could not find after research).

Can a Med student from Monash please find out. Maybe some of us should also send an email enquiry to Monash and receive their feedback. This is very depressing news!

Official response:

Hello pi,

Thank you for your enquiry. Interviews in January will be offered to highly ranked scholarship recipients that meet criteria that is very similar to the UMAT/ATAR interviews offered last year. We will release more information in time for Open Day, 5 August 2012.

What I can gather to this is that as the refer to "scholarship", they probably mean only the 99.90+ ATAR folk (as scholarships are pretty hard to get), but, you never know. That's just my reading of this.

So my tip would be to head down to the lecture by Prof Wayne Hodgson on Open Day to get the up-to-date facts on this :) Hopefully for you guys, it's still on the cards :)

I've just found out that scholarships are actually 99.95, so not even 99.90 will cut it unfortunately.

One thing to note is that if they scrap the interviews held in January (for majority of applicants at least) then that should result in the cutoff UMAT being lower to get an interview (compared to last year assuming competition doesn't rise dramatically).
