Need help with being more productive with time

Hello

Coming back form term holidays im having trouble using time effectively for studying. I know i can do it, i did really well on the holidays in terms of studying and using time adequately however, now it seems im procrastinating a lot more and wasting valuble time by doing something unproductive. Especially coming home from school im finding it extremely hard to get in a good amount of work done, usually because im really tired (or lazy?). i don't know if its because im losing motivation or school has ruined my schedule.
I've tried not going on facebook or reddit for the entire day to see if that helps, but i tend to find something else unproductive to do.

I was wondering if you guys had any tips on using time effectively and getting those hours in for studying while reducing procrastination.

This may not work for you, but something I found/find useful in terms of time management is to set myself a certain amount of work to do per day, and that when I finish that amount of work, I can relax for the rest of the time.

What it does is set a benchmark for a set amount of WORK (not time) per day, and also allows you to have time to yourself so you don't burn out and become a zombie before your exams!

Operant conditioning works well.  ;D

I find as well, being realistic about how much study you are going to do really helps. If you sit there and say "I need to write 15 essays" the task is too big to even try start but if you say "I'll spend one hour on an essay" it sounds much more desirable and you now have a set time period where you HAVE to do what you need to do.

Hopefully you aren't 'burnt out' but what I do when I can't do anything is go for a run around my local park to clear my head or just lay on the ground and rest (Sleeping position).  [My Tips]

Normal tips I would give would be to give yourself time to rest and do work that you are capable of fitting in and not be a zombie during the last few weeks of VCE [Assumption you're in Year 12]. Also it's best to sleep if you know you can't get work done at night so you recharge for school the next day and try to do some work at school as well.

Good luck on your studies! :)

Same here - I have so much work to do ~ it's not like I'm lacking the motivation to do it, but then I just fall asleep at my desk???Does this mean I'm tired? How do I stop myself from sleeping, when I want to do the work? Then when I get up the next day, I just feel guilty for not doing that trial exam or whatever  :-\

Does this mean I'm tired?

I tend to feel sleepy when im tried so i guess that makes two of us

How do I stop myself from sleeping, when I want to do the work?

No but really, hit up the caffeine or something.

Exercise also actually gives you more energy. If you're sitting around all day, for extended periods of time, your stamina and energy can take a dive off a cliff. Just go for a walk around the park or something. Concentrating too hard for too long will burn you out. Take a walk for that as well.

Try to have as many lights on as you can, they'll keep you up. Natural sunlight is probably the best.

Get some ventilation or a fan going too if you can.

If its the computer thats stopping you from studying, i suggest turn it off or go to your local library, unless you absolutely need it. Install leechblock for firefox (theres a chrome equiv too) to limit how much time you spend on timewasting sites.

I also just realised im procrastinating on my physiology exam by writing this, oh the irony.

I've tried not going on facebook or reddit for the entire day to see if that helps, but i tend to find something else unproductive to do.

This was me in VCE. I had to turn off my screen to get work done. Soon, that wasn't enough. I had to disconnect the keyboard or the mouse. Wasn't enough. After that i had to unplug the mouse and keyboard and hide them around the house. Then i had to hide the powerboard...screen..etc.

I stored it in a room of the house we never used so i wouldn't be tempted to touch it.

Here's what happened when i did that:

(Hint: It's a mouse.)

Try disconnect it as much as you can though. Change the password to your steam account, facebook, etc.

I really don't think it's a smart idea to stop yourself from sleeping for the purposes of keeping a decent sleep cycle during exams...

I think they meant falling asleep on your exam, not that they shouldn't sleep at all (which is a very bad idea, even if you save a few hours by getting less sleep, you waste the entire next day because you're so stuffed).

I recommend using the Pomodoro Technique for everything especially studying. Basically you work on a task or 25 minutes without stopping then you rest for 5 minutes. That's 1 pomodoro. Then you continue again. If you stop in the middle of a pomodoro and you find you're not working on the task you have to start over. Look it up on Google, also there's plenty of apps for smartphones about this productivity method.
