How hard is it to get a 10? Does your essay have to be 'perfect', or can a solid, 'ticks-all-the-boxes-without-being-overly-mind-blowing' essay get a 10?

Your essay needs to stand out and be really good (ie. tick the boxes) at the same time.  That's it, really.

Essays can't be perfect. It's a brilliant response given the time you're restricted to.

It's definitely not impossible if you have quality and complex ideas, strong and clear writing and you follow the criteria and do everything to impress the examiners.

There is no perfect essay. People will write essays differently, they will draw on different examples and explain them in different ways. A 'perfect' essay in an exam would address the question, use appropriate and different examples while explaining them clearly, offer a unique point of view and whatever else you can include to blow the examiner away. If you do all the right things and leave the examiner amazed at what they've read then you'll get a 10.

There are people who write essays that are worth 11/10 and 12/10, which are the perfect responses you refer to, and then those very good responses which piece together everything extremely well, cover any gaps and write fluently which also receive full marks, even if they aren't mindblowingly amazing. When it comes down to it being creative and being original with your ideas beats a perfectly structured response which uses mundane and vapid points, even if they're expressed amazingly.
