Bachelor of Commerce + DipLang + breadth?

I want to do BComm (Economics, Marketing) with a concurrent DipLang (Mandarin) but want to keep some breadth subjects free for Arts breadth (Anthropology). I intend to do BComm/DipLang for 4 years (like normal, no fast-track).

I asked two people in Commerce at UoM today if I can still do Arts breadth with a DipLang but they gave me COMPLETELY different answers so now I am really confused. The course structure guide in the Commerce booklet said:
1st year - 3 compulsory subjects (Quantitative Methods 1, Intro to Macro, Intro to Micro) + 3 subjects from core program (e.g. Principles of Marketing) + 2 breadth

I assumed these breadth should be put towards Mandarin, meaning I can't do 1st year Arts breadth, but the first person I spoke to said I didn't have to do all the 3 subjects from core program in the first year because they would help me organise my course plan to fit my DipLang in. The second person said I must put all my breadth (8 subjects) towards the DipLang??? Does this mean I get breadth or not???

Does anyone here do BComm with DipLang? Can you describe your course structure and your experience with it? Thank you so much for your help! :)

Just saw this!

Hi gummo, this is pretty much what I am planning on doing too! Will be in my third year next year and my plan is to finish my BCom (Management/Marketing) with a DipLang Chinese by end of 2014 (also 4 years total).

Wish I could tell you straight up if you can do other Arts breadth or not, but I'm not really sure. Speaking from personal experience though, it's been pretty confusing trying to figure out how I should plan my course structure from now (but that's mostly because I had originally started out doing Accounting/Finance and still haven't enrolled in my DipLang) so it's good that you are planning to start the DipLang early.

Anyway, my recommendation is that you book a 15min course advice appointment with the Commerce Student Centre for general course requirements advice. They will help with working out how much credit points you need/can credit etc. I've been told there will be some more appointment times available in the first week of 2013. Another person to speak to is Sylvia de Luca. She's the Arts/Diploma of Languages course adviser- super helpful and nice and can help you plan out your DipLang subject structure.

Also consider doing a few summer subjects; it will give you more leeway if you ever happen to fail a subject and give you more flexibility during the year.

Hope this helps.  :)

Lucky that you saw this, because I totally forgot to PM you, whoops!

Thank you so much for your advice, joyjoy! I didn't know they had advice sessions. Hopefully they'll have some free slots when I get back to Australia in late-January though. I'll try asking them now.

Summer subjects definitely sound like a good idea. They might help me get around all the breadth trouble, haha.

Good luck with planning your new course structure! :)
