Really worried!!?

I've been looking at a course at monash uni for ages now and got the marks for last years clearly in. However now upon doing lots of research it seems the course could be practically useless. It is a management/marketing double degree, however the general consensus seems to be do a degree in subjects such as accounting/economics/finance/science/engineering etc, and then do management courses in the future. Am I totally stuffed for employment in the future? This area, management/marketing, is my dream, however if I'm not going to be employable, should i look at transferring? Is it an employable degree?

As general consensus goes, a BComm(Management) is virtually useless compared to a Business or quantitative major. This is because the course isn't really teaching you to be a manager, you can only get that from having experience actually managing people. A BComm(Marketing) is less useless than a Management degree, but when you compare it to a major in Actuarial, Finance, Accounting etc., it does have a lower job outlook. This is not to deter you however, if you truly love Marketing and want to get into a marketing role (Mad Men what what!) this course would be good for you. However, if you want to have a stronger, employable degree (possibly in a field you won't like as much), then a different degree might be better.

Remember, if this is your dream course, please enrol in it. You'll only regret it if you don't.

Relax! Don't freak out now!
Like you said, you can always look at transferring. If you've wanted to do this course for such a long time, I'd recommend you just jump in and see how it goes, and where it can take you. People can say a lot of things, but when you're in the course, talking to older students and whatnot, it will probably give you a better idea of the true job outlook.

Seriously though, most degree (if not all) will result in job prospects IF you perform well. I don't see how a company would decide to have a barely-pass grad of another discipline without much co-curricular activities over a  management/marketing grad with marks in the 90's with a heap of extra activities/work experience.

I found that many of the graduates who complains about job prospects are *mostly those who either gets average marks in uni or are picky on their first job.

Anyway, my message to you is to do WHAT YOU ENJOY and also make sure that you are one of the BEST IN WHAT YOU ENJOY. There is no such thing as a superior degree.

It's true that marketing has the greater job prospects when compared to management.
However, that's not to say you shouldn't complete a degree in it.
I am majoring in marketing, and really like it. Although most companies look for accountants etc... there are also many big companies like Accenture and Robert Walters who seek marketing graduates as well.

Thanks everyone, I decided I'd stay with management/marketing. It is the course I would probably enjoy whereas I probably wouldn't have enjoyed the other as much
