I think there are a couple of points which I think need to be raised.
Firstly, scaling isn't a random process, it's not like somebody sits there and says subjects A, B and C should be scaled up by X, Y and Z. It's a statistically determined amount which comes from comparing the strength of the cohorts with the GAT (as far as I know). Although I'm not an expert, what I think happens is that subjects which have a stronger cohort (i.e. a cohort which does better in the GAT) will get scaled up more than a subject with a weaker cohort.
So even though we might think that subjects such as Specialist Maths gets scaled up too much, it's not like someone is sitting there and deciding to scale it up that much. Personally though, I still believe that no subjects should be scaling beyond 50, because that is actually quite unfair. Also, the "LOTE bonus" is also an issue, although I know the government does it to encourage people to study a LOTE, I'm quite interested to see how many of those who complete VCE-level LOTE actually go on and pursue further studies in it and actually use it later on in life.
