How do we know which textbooks to buy and when can we buy them?

Also, do most people take notes by hand or on laptops/tablets?

You can go to the Portal to check your booklist but I would highly recommend you wait until the first lecture.  Your lecturer will advise you of which textbooks you need (if any).  If your lecturer constantly refers to the textbook then it might be a good idea to get the textbook.

With regards to notes, whichever method tickles your fingers will do.  Just use whichever is comfortable and convenient.

I've had a look at the booklist, and would I be right in saying that the "core" textbooks are those used by the lecturers, as opposed to the "alternative" ones?
