biomed

just decided to make a post to ask how everyone else is coping with first year biomed while simultaneously give my own opinion (whether it is needed or not)

- biology is fun and i enjoy it
- the maths lecturer is killing me slowly... The fact that he overcomplicated simple things like punnett squares shows to me that I'm going to be as lost as Nemo in this class, however the content at the moment is bearable (I feel like my understanding will drift away soon though  :-\ )
- Chemistry is the hardest for me. The way we just flew into orbitals and things from year 11 that I struggle to scrape up from my memory made me anxious but pre-reading helps.

Overall I like the course and the crazy competition kind of motivates me (i know its only first year but what can i do, im an excited jaffy  ;) )

Everything seems to be going at a fast pace, and I'll probably have o be more efficient when I summarise.

Biology is interesting, but some of the new concepts I don't quite understand (such as actin interacting with myosin motors, and other cell movement stuff)

I looked at the lecture notes for Week 2 for Maths and immediately wanted to kill myself

Chemistry is getting a bit confusing at the moment, but if I rewatch the lectures and summarise I will probably develop a better understanding

The biology and chemistry lecturers are pretty awesome, particularly Hutton and the sheer clarity in which he explained concepts such as the chair conformation of cyclohexane and the whole axial and equatorial hydrogens which were previously foreign to me. EDDA with Ray is good fun also! Uni is a blast so far, much better than school at least. :)

Would be nice if the Bio lecture notes for the next few weeks were uploaded though.... gets boring reading the same stuff over.

Yeh bio notes arent being posted :(

EEDA is so boring

Chem is going fast as seems like they are cramming a years work into a semester.

Btw, was Chem a pre-req for Biomed? cant recall

I actually find EDDA fascinating, didn't like it at first glance but it's getting better each day :P

Yeah I believe chemistry was a prerequisite, which accounts for the hasty speed of the course, given the presumed knowledge from VCE/IB days.

Experimental Design and Data Analysis, aka stats. Never heard a good word about the subject, honestly.

Craig Hutton's a good chem lecturer, definitely better than most lecturers I've had. But I imagine Chem for Biomed would be super fast-paced and hard to keep up with, not sure how I'd have coped with that.

...you're right. haha! Chem for BBMED is Chem 1 + Chem 2 (sem1 + sem 2 for BSc students), minus plant stuff apparently.

Bio is interesting and surprisingly for someone who didn't do VCE bio I actually understood most of the concepts and am enjoying it. I only found out what a cytoplasm was last week though LOL.
Stats bores the living hell out of me and It's the subject I dislike the most. Going to have to attempt to fluke a h1 somehow.
Chem is also interesting with all the conformations and orbitals, it is a bit difficult atm but with further reading I should be fine.

However in comparison to other people my work is minimal and I really need to step up my game ...

when I read the prescribed reading, most of the time there's a lot more depth to the information. I try to sum it up and add it to the lecturer's notes but I wonder if I should even bother? Is the stuff they dont talk about in lectures but incorporate into the pre-reading examinable?

That's right.

The order being lectures, tutes, pracs, ilts (an equal amount of prac/ ilt content)

To be honest, it's only worth checking out the textbook for concepts that you are finding difficult to understand from the explanations in the lecture notes.

Pre readings or set readings are also examinable, if less likely to be assessed

Though arts/ psych subjects are  more likely than science subjects to do this
