Chemistry for Biomedicine Thread

Hey guys, just thought I'd make a separate thread for chem for biomed, seeing as there are heaps of separate posts floating around regarding this subject.

I'll start off with my question..  for question 2c) in week 5 of the Tute book. so markovnikov's rule says that the H will end up on the carbon with the most Hydrogens.. Does this mean that in this question, the H will end up on the carbon that has the ethyl group sticking out (because there are 6 H atoms on that carbon in comparison to 4 H atoms on the other carbon)? Because I just looked at my answers that I copied from the tutor, and she placed the Hydrogen on the C atom with the methyl, and the OH on the carbon where the ethyl group is. Is this right or did she make a mistake?

Thanks in advance

Hey, not sure if it's too late and you've already figured it out, but according to my tutor (Prof. Hutton) either one is right. He said that we'll get a mixture of the 2 products. I think Markovnikov's rule refers to the H bonded directly to either side of the C=C, so in this case, both sides have 1 H and 1 alkyl group therefore the H from water could add to either side. I think that's right....

Also, does anyone know when the chem MST starts? I thought it was Monday next week, but a friend said that it runs from Friday next week till the following Wednesday o.o
